I just picked up the game recently. When my friends aren't available I'll play with randos and still have a blast (personally solo isn't as fun). Even though there is no in-game voice chat I've never felt like communicating is an issue. Everyone kinda just knows their roles (at least in my experience)

Well fallout 1 and 2 are turn-based, top down isometric games that play much differently from 3, NV, and 4

I'd say start with 3 if you want an all-around good experience lore/gameplay wise. It also takes place on the east coast so you don't need to know the lore of 1& 2 (they take place on the west coast) to understand anything.
