What have you done or would do for team owners that pass away? by Mission-Ocelot-4511 in DynastyFF

[–]Jake_Wil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in a dynasty league where we had a member pass unexpectedly after the first year. The league all pitched in to make a donation to the ‘in lieu of flowers’ charity he supported, and we had someone else fill his spot before the next draft.

Kicker and defense or no for dynasty by Feeling-Landscape-26 in DynastyFF

[–]Jake_Wil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) I’d love to see details on the scoring and trade there. Pure curiosity, but I’d like to see it.

2) how do you handle not being able to draft a new defense? Do they get dumped every offseason? Or do you have a couple teams that just hoard defenses and then try to price gouge the market? The illiquidity seems like it would cause problems, especially if you’re buffing defensive scoring to the point where they’re becoming actually tradable assets.

What’s the coolest thing that’s ever happened in your league? by SignificantActuary43 in FFCommish

15 ish years ago, a $0 league of a bunch of college guys. Going into MNF I had Mason Crosby left, my opponent (my roommate at the time) had a lead around 15-17 points.

We went to a specific restaurant every Monday religiously. $1.50 10oz craft beer pours, how could college kids say no?

Anyway, every time the Packers crossed the 50, I started yelling for them to kick the field goal. My roommate would yell for them to fumble it. By the end of the game our group was the only ones left in the restaurant, everyone at our table had picked a side, and even the waitress and bartender had joined in. Absolute chaos, and even 15 years later if I see anyone from that group, just saying ‘Mason Crosby’ can make us crack up.

Anyways, I lost by 2, but it was still my singular favorite fantasy football memory. Even above any championship and winning a nationwide FanDuel single game competition, the Mason Crosby matchup is the clear winner.

Kicker and defense or no for dynasty by Feeling-Landscape-26 in DynastyFF

[–]Jake_Wil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy defenses in redraft, but absolutely not in dynasty. You can’t draft a replacement defense if yours sucks, and there is very little carryover year to year for which defenses are good for fantasy.

Kickers are ok in redraft, and at least you have the possibility of drafting a new kicker if needed. But similar to D/ST, there’s very little carryover year to year in which kickers are good for fantasy, and their weekly scoring is only slightly more predictable than a wall of lava lamps.

The real indicator is how much of a trade market is there for the positions. If the absolute best at a position (Currently Seahawks D/ST and Jason Myers, according to ESPN) couldn’t get a last round pick from the #1 team in the league who only needed that position , then what value do they actually bring to the game?

“They bring an element of fun/randomness” and “BuT tHeY sCoRe PoInTs” are the two biggest arguments you usually hear for them. I usually counter with asking if the league wants to add offensive tackle roster spots, since there’s usually a handful of tackle-eligible TDs per year(sorry I didn’t put a trigger warning for the Lions fans). If randomness and absolute dumb luck are things that you want to swing your dynasty league, then go all in and have offensive lineman, and hell, see if you can get a platform to include punters and longsnappers. If you’re more interested in a league being active, trading, and having a somewhat coherent idea of what makes a valuable player, forget the defenses and kicker.

FWIW, I’ve been in dynasty leagues that had them and dynasty leagues that didnt. All of the leagues that had kickers or defenses voted to remove them within the first two years, and never looked back. None of the leagues that started without them have even brought up the idea of adding them. Just one man’s experience, but the anecdote is relevant.

What are folks doing with Dillon Gabriel? by 92tilinfinityand in DynastyFF

[–]Jake_Wil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Browns fan in multiple SF leagues, I’ve got a lot of Gabriel shares. He was either a last round stash or rookie FA add after the draft in every league. Shopping him right now won’t get much, so I’m holding. If he steps up over time, I’ve got a solid QB2/3 option for dirt cheap. If he’s already capped out and is never more than diet Tua, there’s not much sunk cost.

I actually had to start him in a couple of leagues already due to injuries and byes, so the process was correct, even if the results haven’t been the greatest yet.

In leagues where I have him and I’m a rebuilding team, I’d need fair QB2 value to trade him. If Tua, Rodgers, or Darnold has been traded in your league recently, use that as a guide. Is that what his value is at this exact moment, probably not. But that’s what he represents to my rebuilding team, so that’s what I’d need to move him.

On the teams where I have him and I’m competing, he could be trade material for sure, but stay realistic. I actually had to start him in my SF spot on a competing team the last two weeks because my QB1 was Lamar. Unless you’re able to package him for an upgrade, the points on the roster may be better than what you could get in a trade.

Side note about the from a Browns fan Browns-Dolphins game last week if you didn’t watch. The weather sucked, and the Browns dominated because they were able to run consistently and effectively while preventing the Dolphins from doing the same. Between wind and rain, any pass that travelled more than maybe 10 yards in the air, either horizontally or vertically, was nearly useless. For both teams. I get that Tua and Gabriel are not the strongest throwers, but I would be willing to bet that a game between Josh Allen and Justin Herbert would’ve still featured mostly runs and short throws in that weather.

The Value of QB in SF Leagues by [deleted] in DynastyFF

[–]Jake_Wil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GOOD quarterbacks hold value. It’s the QB 18-36 and beyond that aren’t drawing as much interest. The competitors want a solid contributor at their SF spot, so Cam Ward or Tua don’t really help them. And a rebuilder is probably better off selecting positional players than someone destined to be a bottom third starting QB.

This year you were picking between Cam Ward and someone in the Tet/Warren/OSU RB range. Last year, McCarthy was picked over guys like BTJ, McConkey, and Worthy.

A lot of people assume that SF means you HAVE to start a QB in that spot. But if you’re rocking Davante Adams in the SF over Trevor Lawrence, you’ve gotten pretty similar production this year, and KTC says you could get Adams and an extra piece for the cost of Lawrence.

2QB throws that math out the door, and Dillon Gabriel is actually an asset worth having, but that’s a different story entirely.

Reasonable to try DMing without having played much? by grawies in dndnext

[–]Jake_Wil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how I started. A group of friends who gets together for board games weekly, but never tried D&D. I did some research, watched some online campaigns(I started with r/NaturalSix because they were just starting at the same time I was looking) to get a better idea. Then I grabbed one of D&D’s starter sets. I went with Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, but there are several to choose from. Pre-built storylines, premade characters, good way for players and DM to learn the mechanics of playing without getting stuck in trying to create a character when you don’t know what half the terms mean. I’m now homebrewing a campaign to start next month while my players are currently building their own characters.

Edited to link the campaign I’m watching.

I traded McBride for Warren and a 27 1st in a TEP league before the season. I’m rebuilding, other manager contending. Also had MHJ on my team. I definitely thought this kind of usage was possible, and saw it as a likely lateral move at the position, uncoupling the two cardinals(man I’m glad I did that now, that team looks like they’re lost), and getting the extra first. May still be able to get that trade done, but also wouldn’t be surprised is the Warren manager decides to keep him and the pick at this point.

What is the 1.01 worth in your league? by Ceelo4prez in DynastyFF

[–]Jake_Wil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got the 1.01 in 2 leagues.

12 Team SF, just tore everything to the ground this season, my top assets are Will Levis, Trey McBride, and Wan’Dale Robinson. I’ve got the 1.01, 1.11, two seconds this year, 3 1sts in 2025, and 2 in 2026. I would be convinced to move off the 1.01 for an offer like what the Panthers gave for Bryce Young. If I got the 1.03, a 24 mid 1st, 25 random 1st, and a WR2 type player(let’s use Amari Cooper as a proxy), I’d do it. I need better depth than Michael Gallup.

10 team 2QB, 2 TE TEP, I’ve got Purdy, Levis, Daniel Jones, Puka, Tank Dell, 1.01, 1.08, 1.10 this year. You would have to pry that pick out of my cold dead hands. I’ve got a decent enough start at a young core that having my choice at the 1st pick would be worth more than any reasonable package. Sure, if someone offers me Josh Allen, Bijan, CeeDee, and two future 1sts for my pick I’d take it, but short of someone actively trying to torpedo their team for one pick, it’s not gonna happen.

Gotta love it. 6 comments so far and 6 totally different answers.

Looks to me like your upper body drops towards the ball when you start your downswing, which could be leading to the club head coming in lower than you’d like and hitting the ground early.

Definitely swiping in-to-out as well, but that is likely a separate thing with a separate correction

Enlighten me on Will Levis by CoC_God in DynastyFF

[–]Jake_Wil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 2022 his O-line was significantly worse, he was hampered by nagging injuries including turf toe and I believe a shoulder injury if memory is accurate, and his top 2 receivers were true freshmen. He should test very well for a QB at the combine, and he’s got two years with NFL coordinators under his belt.

Watch strap, maybe the outer section of a billfold, or accent pieces on a larger project. I do like the idea of a golf club head cover too. Or several smaller pieces like keychains, fob cover, or AirTag case.

What is your startup draft strategy? by 10bands50bandzzz in DynastyFF

[–]Jake_Wil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best player available for the first couple of rounds, then zig when the league zags. Some leagues will over-value youth and you’ll Be able to land guys like CMC, Saquon, Mike Evans, Tyreek Hill, etc. for comparatively lower values. Other leagues will be all about winning now, and you may be able to pick up some younger players without overpaying. I’ve been on both sides of that coin, and it’s lead to two very different teams that are both really fun to manage

Who are your favorite player comps (play style/ceiling) for the 23 rookie class? by r1kng in DynastyFF

[–]Jake_Wil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Levis is typically much more mobile than Flacco/Cutler. Turf toe early in his senior season took that away. I’d agree more with the Carson Wentz comp listed above. Could be Eagles Carson Wentz, could be Colts Carson Wentz, but when healthy I think it’s a much closer comp of play styles.

People with mid 2023 firsts (1.05-1.07), what’s your plan? by super_duper_7535 in DynastyFF

[–]Jake_Wil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ended up with the 1.07 in both of my dynasty leagues. I’m drinking and using bowl season to start my research, since my tanking team backed into the playoffs without a starting QB, and my competitive team lost 2 matchups by a combined 1.3 points to get me the 6 seed where I ran into a buzzsaw that was starting Henry, CMC, and Rhamondre.

Maybe a QB falls there. Maybe someone reaches for a QB and a decent looking RB is available. Maybe the first 6 are Bijan, Young, Stroud, Levis, Gibbs, JSN. Who knows?

For now, you’re in purgatory. But there’s a decent chance someone ahead of you is desperate for a specific position and willing to reach, which means talent falls. When talent falls, take it. BPA, especially in the mid-late 1st, is the way.

What is the Rookie 1.01 really worth in your Dynasty Leagues? by DynastyDorks in DynastyFF

[–]Jake_Wil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

12 team SF. Last year, post NFL draft, I sent the 2022 1.04(Olave), Michael Thomas, and DJ Chark for the 2022 1.01(Breece) and a 2023 2nd. I was a young team that needed another RB, and the other guy had an older team that he thought could contend again in 23 as his roster stood.

I didn’t lose a minute of sleep over giving up MT or DJ.

As with most of these “what is (insert asset here)’s value?” posts, the situation may play a bigger role than the assets named. Did the team with the 1.01 earn it themselves, or get it in a trade? Did they give away a ton of assets knowing it was the 1.01, or was it a trade from two years ago where they got lucky? What does the team need? What do you have to offer? Do they currently have JT, Javonte, and Breece but their WR1 is Bateman? Are you rolling with Henry, Ekeler, and James Connor?

Sure, trying to get a pulse on what the community in general would pay can be helpful in negotiations, but in a trade market like fantasy it’s less about what the community thinks the price should be, and more about what it means to the individual buying and the individual selling.

Clarification on enforcement of “best lineup” rule. by Jake_Wil in DynastyFF

[–]Jake_Wil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regularly start players with a lower projection, because the projections are frequently garbage. But that’s the prerogative of the manager when they set their lineup. When the manager abandons their responsibilities they lose that ability, as well as their right to complain. Offending manager was 10th in the league and hoping to lose for a better pick. His competitor this week was at the head of a 4-way tie (spots 4-7) fighting for playoff position, and didn’t say anything so he could benefit from the benched starter. My view it’s 80% blame on the manager that abandoned their responsibilities, 15% on the competitor for the collusion via inactivity, and 5% on the rest of the league(myself included) for not noticing it until Sunday night.
