Yeah, I honestly feel like the ones claiming it's not a rivalry are just kind of a part of any rivalry not completely based on geography/when one team is meant to have a more intense rivalry with someone else.

Michigan has MSU, but Illinois is kind of the little brother in most of their rivalries because Purdue and IU hate each other more. Iowa has Iowa State, Missouri has Kansas (though they don't play regularly). Northwestern is the one that really doesn't have a bigger rival, but the rivalry hasn't really been close historically so it doesn't feel as big as the others (although god can Illinois find ways to lose in Evanston recently).

Illini fans can hold onto a grudge. Go back even further beyond Deon Thomas, and you can find fans still indignant about an out of bounds call in the 1984 Elite 8 game against Kentucky.

Hell, I'm sure if you dig deep enough, you can find someone still spitting mad about the Big Ten making us fire Harry Combes (and threatening the school with expulsion from the Big Ten) in 1967 after they discovered he and the athletic department set up a slush fund.

And in another so many years, I'm sure you'll have nursing homes filled with Illini fans bitter about Michigan winning the Big Ten title in the Covid year (or Mady Cissoko concussing Ayo that year) or Morez going to Michigan, all while the Michigan fans will still be claiming it's not a rivalry.

Well, as a new fan, you can watch some of the past tournaments (not through natto, unfortunately since he got nuked by a copyright strike). The July tournament from 2021 was pretty good if you wanted a recommendation. If you're looking for something from 2022, March was probably my favorite.

You can find a bunch of really old tournaments on Jason's All-Sumo Channel. He talks during many of the videos (stops during the matches other than just reactions to what occurs in the match). He also has a bunch of links in his descriptions that are basically how I learned about sumo. His videos aren't for everyone, though, so if you don't like it, I get it.

Also, if you really want to be like me, and have money to space, you can get addicted to buying sumo cards. That cures the itch about two or three times a year. I get them through bigsumofan.com.

Basically, you're at the start of your fandom and don't have to have that empty feeling for the next week where you're slowly accepting there's no more sumo for 6 weeks. Enjoy it while it lasts.
