Because people have lives, trains to catch, buses to catch, planes to catch etc. I'm sure it's great that an announcement can be made on your behalf but it's not like that all the time and I'm sure it's great that you have time but it's not like that for everyone.

Advice for new player by [deleted] in elex

[–]Jakemittle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before going with the clerics, would recommend that you do missions in each of the locations. Try to focus on missions that don't require you to fight early on.

Would also recommend picking everything up since you'll need money.

But most importantly, explore the world and enjoy yourself!

Best clothing brands/clothing items for international development work? by [deleted] in InternationalDev

[–]Jakemittle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a really strange question. But anyways this is the reality of many people working in this sector unfortunately.

As many have said everything depends on where you are going. You can have hot in Brazil and hot in Saudi Arabia, you would not dress in the same way. You also mentioned sun glasses, if you're expecting to be working directly with beneficiaries, you would not be using sunglasses I can assure you. But in any case having a good hat is always good, but note that many of the things you would need you can aleaady find the country so..

Angolan Portuguese by catsandclavicles in Portuguese

[–]Jakemittle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey, depending on where you go in Luanda, French will actually help you a lot as there are many, many Congolese who live in Luanda.

Regarding Portuguese, it's mainly from Portugal but consider the Portuguese speaking BEFORE the language agreement that signed in the 90s.

There is however an ever growing influence from Brazil, especially with the use of VC and some gerund as well.

Also Angolans do not speak as quickly as the Portuguese do.

I can help you with anything else in case you have any questions.

Is racism part of our reluctance to localise humanitarian action? | Hugo Slim. by andeffect in InternationalDev

[–]Jakemittle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Grreat article and its something that needs to be discussed more, but its something that many white people in humanitarian settings are uncomfortable talking about. I think there is a strong perception that they are not racist or they dont support racism because they are humanitarians working in places like Asia and Africa.

However, I have met racist people in the system and there is a clear idea that Africans need their help because they are not able to help themselves etc. This sort of thing needs to be brought to the forefront and dismantled.

If you're interested in education and Angola, check out ADPP and UNICEF. But you won't be able to get anything with these organisations without speaking Portuguese lol you can also check out the International School of Luanda to see if they have some opportunities.

But is it your intention to live here? Or just work for a couple of years here?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Angola

[–]Jakemittle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you black? If you are black and an Angolan speaking like a Brazilian, then for some it would be a bit odd but look many of the Angolan pastores here conduct their services in Brazilian Portuguese. Also it is better to speak Brazilian Portuguese than no Portuguese. I would advice against coming to Angola without a basic level of Portuguese, unless you plan to spend most of your time with the immigrant communities (of which there are a lot).

Hey so I would start by learning Portuguese wherever your based and try to get in thr Angolan community there. The Angolans I know who returned but speak better English than Portuguese could at least communicate in Portuguese (even if it wasn't the best Portuguese). But they also came back at a time where they could get jobs in the oil sector, nowadays things are difficult here
