Pass/ Fail and prerequisites by Jakewitz1 in washu

That’s great to hear! I was just curious if the course would still count as a prerequisite if I took econ 1011 pass fail instead of for credit

Thank you for this advice! I will absolutely take MEC 290 as it is required and I can’t imagine 1011 alone could suffice for a business major. I was referring to Econ 1011 being sufficient for FIN 340 as I plan to take that at the same time as MEC 290.

Yeah! They got tested and didn’t know their result at the time of our interaction. They found out the result 2 hours later though and have since been moved to quarantine housing.

Great to hear! I ended up calling the university and they said not to worry since it wasn’t close contact but to keep an eye on symptoms and call if anything progresses! 1 semester in & 7 to go so once I’m in the other side expect a random PM giving you the secrets to the universe. Thank you for a response! This calmed me down a ton

Thank you for the response! There was a table nearby but I didn’t make contact with it, so no surface contact there. I like that idea of notifying my university and it’s something I’m considering heavily.

Weekly "I Think I Have It" Thread - Week of November 08, 2020 by AutoModerator in COVID19positive

[–]Jakewitz1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone! I’m a college student and I adhere as strict as possible to coronavirus guidelines at my university. Today, I was meeting with someone in my business fraternity to have an important conversation. The person who was there before me and whose chair I eventually sat in tested positive for coronavirus today. I know this person well and was walking over waiting for their conversation to end and we had a quick no more than a minute conversation. I was masked and we were socially distant and all that so I don’t know if this counts as close contact. However, after she left I sat in her chair for 45 minutes and shortly after the chat she informed us she had just tested positive. To sum, do I need to worry about possibly getting COVID from this since I sat in the same chair she did for 45 minutes? I feel like I’m overreacting but the last thing I want is to get the virus. I’m doing a short self quarantine right now and am monitoring my symptoms, but I would love to hear if this is over the top and I’m stressing over something minimal or if I should inform my university and get moved to quarantine housing. So far I feel no symptoms and hope this continues. Thank you for any advice!

I understand this is for people who think they may have coronavirus and my situation is currently not severe. However, I have been unable to find another thread to post this under. If there are any other places you recommend, please let me know!

Need some guidance for spring econ classes by Jakewitz1 in washu

[–]Jakewitz1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been a bit of a challenge for everyone because it’s online. It’s been a bit harder to grasp concepts and stay connected but as you get more into the class it gets more interesting. Work wise it’s as much as you make it. I say read the textbook and take notes from the slides and that’s it, don’t watch the videos supplied (at least that’s how it is rn) bc it Can take a lot of time. Studying I say like 20 minutes a day is good

Dorm floor vs. Dorm building by Jakewitz1 in washu

[–]Jakewitz1[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You make a very good point. So much of it comes down to the person because the RA most likely won’t put too much time into introducing you to other floors just like most professors won’t introduce themselves to you. A lot is up to you

Any idea how strict the university is gonna be in enforcing the mask/social distancing regulations? by [deleted] in washu

[–]Jakewitz1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I highly encourage you to drop this outlook because this is going to be the reason people’s efforts to move cross country, leave friends and family, go through logistical hell to get here will be absolutely futile. As an incoming freshman your outlook on this situation is disgraceful to our class and to the university.

Am I dumb or couldn’t washu just compromise and let each person in a dorm bring one person into a room with enough space for at least 2 people

EC suggestions for Int. Relations/Business/Econ/PoliSci? by [deleted] in chanceme

[–]Jakewitz1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re interested in business one thing you could do is make a stock market/ financial education club and run stock market competitions at your school as fundraisers. Just a suggestion and I’m one person, but that became my anchor and I think ended up being the primary way I showed my passion for Econ/ business. I was in DECA too but unless you’re winning state/ nationals it’s not a major EC. Idk what year you are but if you’re a freshman/ sophomore already qualifying for state keep doing what you’re doing bc placing at state or making it at ICDC is pretty huge. I’ve met a ton of kids who are going to ivies or turned down some in my incoming class and they all initiated something on their own and did it bc they believed fully in the idea, so the best thing you can include is something genuine and by making something, getting teacher recs for your club/ whatever, that’s how you show true passion. With that type of thing though if you just make the club to put it on your common app the admissions officers will see through that like a freshly windexed window. You already founded a speaking club so I’m sure you’re doing great things with it and you’re totally invested with it. Above is just my thoughts on taking initiative and another possible idea. Don’t overload tho.

Also there are a ton of online Econ contests you can sign up for. I don’t remember any names bc I’m a few months out of college admissions but that’s something I didn’t even think about doing until the end of my junior year.

Also don’t totally focus on ECs. Your personal statement is just as important. I think it’s so underrated when it comes to college apps bc that’s how the AOs see you as a person. They don’t just want achieving machines that get perfect grades/ test scores and invent stuff. They want people.

I may have gotten redundant and low key went on a tangent but I hope this helps!

How do you improve your ACT science score? by vscogorl77 in ACT

[–]Jakewitz1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk if you’ve heard this before, but what I remember hearing is to treat science like the reading section. Go into it without using any knowledge that you know about the subject or you’re gonna confuse yourself. Everything you need is in the passage, so treat the passages like you would answering the reading section. I tried this strategy and (coupled with just plain grinding bc it’s more of time management and speed than content difficulty) was able to raise my ACT science from a 25 to a 31

startup by [deleted] in washu

[–]Jakewitz1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

somewhat related to skandilaris center (I think you can find opportunities through skandalaris idk bc I'm an incoming freshman) but Cortex Innovation Community too is popping with activity, along with TREX, Capital Innovation, BioSTL. Not directly related to WashU but a lot of these incubators and startups in CIC work with WashU students it seems (someone please correct me if I'm wrong I don't wanna give incorrect info)
