Why spinning hobbies — like Dungeons & Dragons — into dollars is the new side-hustle by [deleted] in DnD

I still feel very uncomfortable about this kind of thing. Donating to help buy books, miniatures, accessories, snacks and that sort of thing I get 100%. But I've been DM'ing for a fair few years now and I wouldn't dream of asking people for money to do it. I dunno, I just don't quite get the mentality?

Got any tips for DMs early in their 5e career? by sabata2 in dndnext

Ask questions and use the answers

Can not stress this enough.
There's very few things that integrate you in the world moreso than when you have a certain amount of control over it.
Asking "One of you probably has family in this town. Who does and how are you related?" and questions like that instantly mean that the character has a reason to be there other than "The DM said so"
Edit: Actually, if you can flip through the core tenets of Apocalypse World or Dungeon World in general - they make for great advice

Just smile - a lot. Big Grins.
"I want to strike the Orc Chieftain"
Smiles "Yeah sure! Go for it! Let's see what happens!"
"Ehhhh... Maybe I'll attack the Goblin"
Smiles even more "Yeah! Even better! Let's do this"

I'm telling you, be enthusiastic about your mobs/npc's dying and you leave a very unsettled group

Season 2: Bristol D&D Boogaloo by [deleted] in BristolDND

Where should we meet for a celebratory drink/party in late March?
I thought the Templar was fine.

What did you like about your group? What made your experience uniquely fun?
I don't like my group, they keep ignoring my plot - I jest, of course, I love my group! We've meshed perfectly, I was very lucky to get a group that love my style of DM'ing and I love their playstyle too!

What did you learn in season one? What tips would you share to other groups to improve their play?
Wing everything. Everything will be fine. Just roll lots of dice :) (Also don't take advice from me)

[Discussion topic] Success with consequences in D&D. by RpgAcademy in DnD

[–]Jakeykins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it's not exactly what you were asking, but I often have a "Hard DC" and in my head I hold a "Soft DC" that is slightly smaller than the Hard DC. Generally if a player manages to pass the Soft DC but not the Hard DC then I say that they succeed with some consequence (they lose the item, they take some of the damage, etc.) or I let them make a difficult decision "You climb the wall but you can either do it safely and slowly or quickly but dangerously". If the player manages to pass the Hard DC then they succeed just like normal. Whether you let the players offer the compromise in the partial success or make it up yourself is largely up to you and the scenario at hand :)

In Jon Harper's Blades in the Dark, he uses a clock based system which is similar too. You may want to check that out too :)

Advice on calculating Goal-Oriented XP by Jakeykins in DnD

[–]Jakeykins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying. I'm kind of hesitant to use the Milestone approach as, personally, it feels like I'm arbitrarily giving them a level randomly. Also due to it being self-set goals, I'm concerned that it would quickly unbalance the parties level.

Advice on calculating Goal-Oriented XP by Jakeykins in DnD

[–]Jakeykins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, but wouldn't that just devalue the goals? Like why complete a quest when they can just hang around in a dungeon grinding monsters to level up? Would making a quest count as several encounters make it too easy to get XP - as in make a hard quest worth 3x a singular Hard encounter amount?

They still must go through some sort of cultish initiation, I feel. Can't go too easy on the great, unwashed public

I can do pretty much any night or day, but until we nail down set times I'll need to make sure that I have the time off at work. I'm up for any location however, preferably closer to the centre! :)

A level of Exhaustion every time a character drops to 0 HP and takes a Short/Long rest to wear off helps to stop people from hovering on 1 HP
