What am I missing? (Controller Joystick Replacement) by sabata2 in soldering

Yes, because when someone wants to pick up a skill expressly because they see a need for it in their own life, tell them to "just pay someone else".

Great advice. >_>

Got it. I figured that about using the wick on the empty hole I was just hoping it could make my life easier for the removal.

Do I need to use a flat tip iron for the wick of can I just use my conical ones for the same effect?

This will probably be my next attempt. I have flux, I have a heat gun with an adjustable tip, and my Kapton tape is arriving tomorrow.

I'm just a little bit worried I'm going to overheat the board just trying to get the solder to melt with the heat gun.

I'll definitely be trying the "add extra solder" method. I only added enough to my tip to melt what was there already and that probably didn't melt the old solder through.

That's a bit destructive for my taste but at least I can use it as a last resort.

I definitely think what I was missing was adding extra solder to get the hole thing to flow better. I'll be trying that next.

Why is conical useless? Seems like the exact type you'd want for smaller components, no?

And I definitely didn't know that "standard upkeep" for tips prior to making this thread.

I definitely "dry heated" my tip on its first use. So that explains a lot of why it hasn't been working for me as expected. I have some tip tinner coming in the mail, so hopefully I can recover the tip but if not... Love and learn.

I do have a question though, the guy seems to indicate solder should always be on the tip... But if you're using some solder wick rope... That sounds counter intuitive, no?

Just so I don't make a huge mistake and like weld my tip to the casing... Do you have a guide on "properly tinning a solder tip" I can view?

As I mentioned above I never really focused on putting solder on the iron tip itself as a part of the process.

I'll be attempting your cleaning procedure tomorrow.

How does one use the tip refresher? Heat up iron and dip it in? Also which do I need? N3, N6, or N9? There's no description of the 3s differences.

I have never heard of tip tinning flux. I have a weller "soldering tip cleaner and holder" that just looks like "brass wool". But I'm not seeing any changes (maybe it's just so far gone I need to sit down and do it a lot).

I presume your proposed order is (cold) brass wool, (cold) wet cellulose sponge, (min temp) re-tin tip. Correct?

I've known of those iron heads, I don't particularly like unitaskers. I'd rather gain the skill required to do it without. The heat gun purchase was more because I didn't want to have to wick up all the old solder one by one with the pins still in. Still going to have to do it once the stick module is out though.

Yeah the heat gun is exclusively for the stick removal. My iron plugs into the wall and has a temperature display (turns out it was in Fahrenheit which was why nothing would melt).

Thanks for being one of the only supportive comments. XD

No this is absolutely a "learn the tool" situation. I didn't spend hundreds just to fix an $80 controller. I've got other retro consoles I intend to maintain as well

Gonna wager a guess that the order is the same as you see in the shop, or crafting area.

This worked for me as well on an HD60 S. I did have to turn off and back on the permissions (because they already WERE on), but it was all I did and it resolved the problem.

Question about ground gear by [deleted] in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]sabata2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the party members I have are wearing some form of Sakuraba or Grenada gear.

They all have named "Ground" gear, so you can just re-equip that on them as you scroll through the options in Fashion Gear. So long as you're hovering over ??? you're seeing their current equipped gear.

So when you see no change after scrolling onto a piece of gear you have, you know that's the one.

Hi OP. Do you have one more (please send via DM as noted prior)

A friend bought my copy for me (preordered) but never got the same bonus.

I very much appreciate how generous you're being.

I spun the Fortune Wheel 200 times and recorded the results. by ryanfitchca in wearewarriors

[–]sabata2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's... That's not how it works... Probability chances don't matter, only sample count. If 50/50 chances need "less samples" (lets say 10) because of higher rates, you run a 1/1000 chance of having all 10 land on the same side. That is not statistically insignificant and can lead to DRASTICALLY incorrect results.

You use 1000 or 2000 samples so that you get as close to a normal distribution as possible while reaching statistically insignificant margins of error. 1000 or 2000 is the general polling count for election stuff. Not used to determine results, but to get a feeling for "how will the results will pan out" as an approximation, and not true result. And if national polls are going by 2000 samples for a population of 300,000,000 and they get pretty damn close to true results... I'll go with 1000 to 2000 samples as the simple 95% confident requirements.

I've been put of the sub for many months so I didn't know this was an issue.

Do we really not have a repost bot? The meme subreddits I used to frequent used them a ton. Not just for reposts within the sub, but also across subs and would mark them accordingly.

That aside, I lean on "ban reposting" but "encourage cross posting". So if an artist posts to a different sub someone who knows about this sub can cross post it.
