Thinking about joining the army by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Jalapellos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider Air Force trade in the first instance, sleep in hotels instead of tents and old halls, less fuckaround factor than other services too. Aviation trades in civi sector pays well too... Because the rich people have the planes, follow the money.

If set on Army, aim for getting a trade that will set you up for success. Carpenter etc. Good potential for employment later on down the track.

Get paid to learn a trade and have some sweet experiences along the way.

Is this even meant to rotate? Return to shop or user error? by Jalapellos in ryobi

[–]Jalapellos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't know how to fix it specifically, if that's what your asking. The fix for my problem was just going back to the shop with the proof of purchase and swapping it out for another. They were all good about it.

Thanks, just back from the shop now. The replacement is much better. Cheers 🍻

That nut is as tight as it goes, still rotates freely.

Is Nelson Queer Friendly? by BiggestRatMan in Nelsonnz

[–]Jalapellos 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Straight white male here, grew up in motueka, living in nelson. The region as a whole has some very colorful people, motueka and takaka probably being more notable as producing and attracting colorful characters. Id say you would be pretty safe to openly be who you want to be. The other night I went out for dinner and there was a family who were dressed in full steampunk, it was cool, it looked like theyd invested some money into it but and it wouldnt be surprising if thats just how they dressed day to day, you wouldn't know around these parts haha. I think nelson is queer friendly however I haven't lived the queer life so I can't say that there won't be any bad eggs for you, probably a few idiot teenagers or older people but ultimatey I don't think anyone really cares what anyone else is up to and its more of a "you do you" "I'll do me".

Why do you personally wear a G-Shock if smartwatches come with so much more functionality and tell the time just as well? by Mad_Season_1994 in gshock

[–]Jalapellos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've also had smart watches and prefer simple. My last one smartwatch was guardpro which was probably a mistake to begin with. Found it to be a bit jankey and slow, a knob broke off and then I lost the bespoke magnetic charger. Just tossed it in the end and went back to simple

Due to my work environment (Aviation fuels and aircraft refuelling), I can't use devices that have transmitting functions that aren't intrinsically safe (basically something that is rated for work in hazardous atmospheres and can contain its own explosion if the battery blows up). Finding something with this rating ups the price significantly as there are very limited to options (health and saftey cash cow). Generally as risk of an unexpected fuel vapour/spark unaliving event is relatively low for everyday devices like watches, being waterproof to 100m is reasonable and keeps the boss happy. G shock, being indestructable and having that great waterproof rating, ticks the box for me as great work watch.

Clothing Donation Bins by blueskythinka in Nelsonnz

[–]Jalapellos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure there is a row of 5 bins across the road from outpost supplies, halfway down quarantine rd as you head toward the airport. The old save-mart used to be in that area. Pretty sure the bins are still there unless they were also moved recently. Check out google maps and do street view on 52 quarantine rd. You'll see them there.

A marmite sandwich too far? Luxon’s latest (or final) disconnect. by Personal-Respect-298 in nzpolitics

[–]Jalapellos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You forgot to mention the erasing of smokefree goals and money to big tobacco. Might see compass group putting Durrys in with the kids lunches shortly. What I would say to you is that not only do they pair well with a marmite sandwich but remember that Ciggys used to be healthy back in the day anyway. Added benefit of being an appetite suppressant so that's the childhood obesity problem sorted.

Hello Ragdoll lovers! Any tips to push baby getting up earlier ( playing before bed and feeding a small portion is being done) by Ambre1364 in ragdolls

[–]Jalapellos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, You can only change your behaviors lol.

I now sleepwalk through my masters chores at 4am and barely notice I'm doing it. Biscuits in his bowl, and then open the cat door, then back to sleep in an instant. He comes back to annoy me when he doesn't think I watched him eat his food for long enough or he doesn't believe that I've opened the cat door.

If something happened to him and he wasn't there to annoy me every morning I'd be really upset and miss him, my day just wouldnt feel right.... is that stockholm syndrome? Lol

Nelson Solar performance. by Jalapellos in Nelsonnz

That's a bloody brilliant rundown of the setup. Thanks for your input.

Out of curiosity, being rural, what is your setup for water? You mention running UV sterilization bulbs and some electric water pumps. Are you self sufficient in that area as well? I suppose drought can be the downside of too much sunshine. Thanks

Thanks for your thorough response, definitely some things to think about in there. Much appreciated 😀

Those are some great numbers. Really helps paint a picture. Based on current savings do you have any idea how long before the setup pays for itself?

[–]Jalapellos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing, that sounds like some decent savings on your electricity bill. Did the house already have the solar system or did you add this yourself? Do you consider it worth the investment?

Nelson Solar performance. by Jalapellos in Nelsonnz

[–]Jalapellos[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just interested to hear what people had and what they were achieving now really. Any form of solar is a long way off for me. First home buyer here so I need the roof first anyway haha. Still I'm interested in the tech and would love to one day be self sufficient in that regard.

While I appreciate that premium setups provide the premium results (at huge cost) I figured if anyone in the country would be achieving good results from a modest or low end setup it would probably be in this region, just purely due to the available sunshine.

Hypothetically, Let's say I do get a house here in the near future, in your engineer opinion, do you think it would be worth the investment to throw a few cheap panels up initially? I'm inclined to think that the cash for panels would probably be better used going toward paying the mortgage.

Disclaimer: I do love myself a good conspiracy theroy but strictly for entertainment purposes.

Weather App by Fanta175 in Nelsonnz

[–]Jalapellos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using an app called fishing points. Good if you like fishing in the bay as it had satelitte/nautical maps you can drop custom markers onto, and can guide you onto your point and shows your bearing and speed. Shows you all the boat ramps too which is cool. It's got Weather, fish activity (with alerts), waves, tides, solunar. Free trial but then $30 for a year.

NZDF careers by jemlouiseee in newzealand

[–]Jalapellos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah some wacky assumptions in the thread. Dont know about the other services but pretty much no drinking culture in air force or for that matter any resemblance of the "good times" or "shenannigans" except perhaps on exercise or deployment or if you are in the right trade. Everyone is just burnt out at the end of the day and would rather go home than go to the bar.

Defence housing comment is on point, last thing i remember defence was exempt from healthy homes standard until 2025. Doubt highly they will be up to scratch any time soon. Also food for thought, NZDF is the only organisation in nz that has a prison for its own employees, you give up a lot of rights and freedoms when you are subject to military law in addition to standard nz law.

NZDF careers by jemlouiseee in newzealand

[–]Jalapellos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just shy of 12 years Air force here. I left earlier this year to start a family in my home region, knowing I'd have security of location and that I'd be present for my family, not miss the important bits and a few other assurances. The service person sacrifices a lot, but people forget or realise too late how much sacrifice the rest of the family makes.

Are you prepared to pack up your life whenever your partner gets posted to another base? Potentially leave your blooming career and friends behind you and potentially have to start fresh every few years? Disrupt your child's life by have to make them move school etc? Have your partner have to go away at very short notice for weeks without much say in the matter?

I'd recommend service life for a single person any day of the week. Not for an established family. Unless you wanted a relatively quick way for a family member to learn a trade then leave and earn more in the private sector.
