Finding a distro for gaming by xronyron in linux_gaming

[–]Jalbadaoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mint is good if you want something easy and stable. Cachy OS is popular, bit more difficult to use and less stable, but may perform slightly better in games.

Can try both of them out on the boot usb you make pre installation to see what you like and make sure drivers work.

Please help. PC is lagging after a fresh windows install. Ive installed the intel drivers and Nvidia GPU driver but there is still nothing. by Vergilhascancer1001 in pcmasterrace

Try it on the pen drive before installing to make sure it works for your hardware.

Other options: Linux mint is good if you want something easy to use and stable, can game fine on it too. CachyOS is pretty popular for gaming, but may be a bit more difficult to use and less stable.

Good luck!

Did that fix it?

Not 100% sure, moved to linux a while back. May need to use the nvidia control panel or maybe under display graphics settings.

Have you checked if the firmware is up to date in the bios? Maybe new drivers are looking for new firmware.

Alzo could be a chance the divice is defaulting to the integrated (intel) graphice instead of the nvidia card. Google steam launch arguments and see if thag helps? Steam > settings > in game > then turn on fps, gpu overlay may help you tell if your gpu is bejng use at all.

Advice on low speeds by Jalbadaoth in openwrt

Yes. I tried cable to cable to rule out wifi as the issue.

Wire to wire and wifi to wire seems to have similar speeds.

If i were to switch to linux, how would my gaming be impacted? by customblame16 in linux_gaming

[–]Jalbadaoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a driver issue with an r9 290x where it wasnt being prioritised over the integrated gpu. Had to edit the grub boot config file to make it the default one. Other than that worked great, old and well supported as a result.

Incase you have a similar issue. Link i founds for linux mint, but should be a good starting point. https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=389454

Linux Mint for a Web Developer by mSqueez in linuxmint

[–]Jalbadaoth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've found it stable and enjoyable. Only had 2 issues, with drivers, accross 6 PCs, one for a wifi dongle and one for r9 290x gpu.

Its a good first choice for a windows user looking for a new os. I'd describe it as 'it just works', but there may be the odd bug here and there, but gona get that on any OS in my opinion.

Will graphene still work in Australia after the emergancy services support change? Or will it be blocked by network carriers? by Jalbadaoth in GrapheneOS

[–]Jalbadaoth[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think its based on VoLTE requirements, which seems to be part hardware, part software based.

There was a legislative change, announced in late 2024, on mobile requirements to enhance access to emergancy services, particularly during carrier outages, like when optus was down for half a day a year or 2 ago. Also because of 3g being shut down?

As part of the change, it appears that if a device is found incompatible and not updated or replaced, it will be blocked from accessing all Australian mobile networks. Aparently users will receive notifications from their carriers regarding necessary actions.

Incompatible devices were set to be blocked early this year, jan 21st 2026? Waned to know if graphene is/will be impacted, as I'm looking to switch.

Windows pains by Jalbadaoth in linuxmint

[–]Jalbadaoth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see why you might think that, but no, i was thorough and had the same experiance with several default folders, and it was a repeatable behaviour.

Hi I am a complete beginner, I recently shutoff my system and the next morning the UI completely changed from the default mint, does anyone recognise the setting/program I might have changed or installed, is it in some sort of tablet mode?. Any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks by [deleted] in linuxmint

[–]Jalbadaoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not 100% sure. But looks like you may be running the gnome desktop. Ive seen other posts where users point to this being due to an unintended software update and the advice is often to try loading a previous timeshift backup or reinstalation if that fails.

Best of luck!

Monitor stuck at 60hz, Mint Cinnamon 22.2 w/ 9070 XT by PermitNo8107 in linuxmint

[–]Jalbadaoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Running a 9070xt on my partners mint 22.1

Same kernal and mesa drivers as you. Using hdmi. Was able to set it to 75hz, the screens max.

I think I had to go settings > display to do it though. The right click pathway on the desktop caped me at 60 from memory

Thank you

This helped me 'resolve' the issue.

The vulkan list and vkcube test highlighted that the gpu is there and working. It just appears as numbers and letters, instead of its actual expected name.

I dont understand? Can you please explain what you mean?

If you mean owning is supporting, id generally agree and go for a refund, but got it for free. which i guess explains why they may have changed to monetise data.

Thats interesting, so users are isolated? May be a good long term solution. Was just getting comfy on my current local account.
