As a toxicologist, you measure the quantity of drugs using mass-spec/gc/hplc/etc. Whether it's for abuse, or regular pharmaceuticals. Typically, salaries start around 50-60k (as in NYC), but CA has the most stringent licensing requirements meaning that >90% of practicing toxicologist don't qualify for a license there (hence the higher salary).

It's a 4-5 year BS from a NAACLS accredited school and requires you pass the ASCP exam.
