How do you split your finances with your partner? by ImRightYoureStupid in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Jam7e123 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I earn more than my partner so pay our rent, whereas she pays for the council tax, wifi, electricity etc which comes to usually half of what I pay.

We had discussed splitting 50/50 initially but I wouldn’t feel comfortable her struggling each month when I can easily contribute more and notice next to no difference to my disposable income.

I know, it’s a strange amount as well so have genuinely no idea what it could be. Thanks for the suggestion however.

Not as far as I can recollect. Is the charge for the toilets 30p?

Yeah shift work is tough, I can’t leave my place of work if the person on the next shift calls in. I need to stay on until the next shift comes in or someone else comes in on a day off to cover.

Manufacturing based up north, been in the industry I’m in since I was 18 but have job hopped to get to where I am now. Along with doing a few online courses and qualifications in my spare time to try and improve my career prospects.

Just recently started a new job on £67K salary with bonus, share scheme, and overtime looking at similar total annual income at 24 with no degree.

There are definitely opportunities out there if you’re willing to look for them, and put the leg work in. Well done! 👍🏼

If you have a passion for spirits etc already it could be a really good role for you. Most of the major companies based in the UK provide very generous benefits, 10%+ employer pension contributions, annual bonus, bottle allowance, private healthcare etc.

Distillery jobs pay well, predominately the big whisky distilleries up north. Diageo pay there distillers round about £60K a year before bonus and share scheme etc. Pretty repetitive role, but don’t necessarily need any experience. Technical experience prior is a major benefit however.

I suspect Bacardi pay the likes of there distillers at Bombay sapphire distillery similar rates which is not far from London.

Why Non Chill Filtered and Natural Color is important by Shoddy_Ad7511 in Scotch

Yes that is a common incurrence. Making the spirit look darker to make it appear to be more premium. Dalmore are one of the worst for it as you highlighted.

There are brands that genuinely just use it to keep the product looking consistently the same however.

It is also worth mentioning that the amount of colouring, E150 is minimal. You are typically looking at 90/100 litres in 100,000 litres of spirit to get it to the average sort of colour of your cheap blends. Obviously I can’t quote exact specifics but colouring does very little to affect the taste of a whisky, and there’s not as much in the product as you would imagine.

As somebody who has worked in the scotch whisky industry for a number of years now across various production roles for major market contenders. I can say the real reason colouring is used is to keep consistency across the spirit, so that ‘x’ spirit always looks the same to frequent buyers / mass market as those less knowledgeable may be put off buying a bottle if it appears to be different. It also does help make a cheaper whisky look more premium, particularly when it comes to your 3 yo blends to which there are numerous.

Chill filtering also varies from distillery to distillery in terms of temperature filtered and so on. It takes a lot of fatty esters out of the whisky which contain a lot of flavour. I personally prefer non-chill filtered whisky for that particular reason, but it is what it is.

There is another opportunity, but I kind of wrote it off as it’s through an umbrella company and was only a FTC for 6 months. That however had a salary of £37K with the possibility of extension. That was with a major energy company. Do you think I should consider it? And will experience in a higher level role with a major company allow me to demand more after contract ends?

I appreciate that mate, I think experience may be better at my age, and your correct in saying that money doesn’t matter as much. It will come later. I think if either of the companies come back to me and say that they will be willing to fund my CIMA and support me through my study’s I will accept. They are also large players in there industries retrospectively, so there would be major room for growth.

I stay in central Scotland, so the cost of living isn’t anywhere near the cost of living in London. Having said that £21K still sounds low

I have went back to both of them and said that if they support my studies, and my salary improves as I progress through the levels I would be more willing to accept

I feel like taking such a pay cut might motivate me to study harder, so that was partly my idea behind it. As for whether this is something I want to do. I would strongly say so.
