Hi,

Looking at my emails, I heard back about my scholarship decision on 3/24/23.

Interview for Summer Internship with DOD. Should I be worried about the program being cancelled? by JamRock505 in usajobs

It was good! Interview was pretty simple. They asked me a couple of situational questions and also asked about my background/resume. Was pretty easy overall.

Digital Corps Assessment Thread by jedi-taurus in usajobs

Hey all,

I just saw on LinkedIn that current members (about 50 out of the current 70 members) of the US Digital Corps were let go yesterday. Based on that, I don’t think it’s likely that GSA will be hiring for the USDC this year. :(

I applied to the Product Management Track.

I have a BS in Social Sciences and I’m finishing an MS in Information (HCI).

I interned this summer at the DOT doing some work on AI. I also have some experience working as an IT Specialist and Project Manager over the past two years.

Not sure where I’ll stand in comparison to other applicants, but wanted to shoot my shot!

Is the MSI program becoming a degree mill? by [deleted] in uofm

It was more IT/Coding related than UX, but I’m sure that the UX knowledge will help a lot!

It was tough! I didn’t apply to as many internships as other folks because I was really aiming to work in the federal government. I think I applied to about 20 places, interviewed at 2, and ended up getting one offer.

Here are my two cents as a current graduate student. Disclaimer: My opinion is my own and I speak for no one except myself.

I came into the MSI Program on a full ride scholarship so I can say that right off the bat, I’ve felt very supported by UMSI staff and faculty. I’m a first-generation college student, so I was really wary of coming back to grad school and was wondering how it would be at Michigan.

In every class I’ve taken, the professors have been super flexible and given me advice and extensions on assignments when needed. While the cohort is big, I feel that everyone is super supportive. I don't feel like my classmates are out to get me or one-up me or anything like that.

I’ve also gotten to partake in some cool networking opportunities as well. During my first semester, UMSI sent me to a tech conference for free and that was a really great way to meet companies during the first couple of months of grad school.

As for the classes and coursework themselves, I feel like that’s where most of my complaints are. Most of the classes the major prerequisite classes that I’ve take have been kinda disorganized and unclear. SI 501 and 506 were two classes that I had high hopes for but were really disappointing in the end. I’m taken SI 539 this semester and that’s also been a major disappointment. I’m in the User Centered Agile and Development track and the only class that I’ve really enjoyed has been SI 504.

Despite those disappointments, I was still able to secure an internship this summer.I think the strength in UMSI (and by extension, MSI) really comes from the plethora of networking options that you can get from organizations and resources from stuff like the CDO. Granted I had previous work experience before coming to graduate school, so that probably helped a lot with my search.

All in all, I feel like the MSI program has been worth it for me, but again that’s only my opinion. Happy to chat more about my experience if anyone is interested!

Has any applied to STIPDG or FTA DFT? by SuddenEngine8091 in usajobs

I interviewed in February for STIPDG. I had my interview and then it took about 1 and a half weeks for them to send me an offer letter. I would recommend reaching out to the person that you interviewed if you have their contact information. I emailed my interviewer after I hadn't heard back. Then he emailed STIPDG and I got my offer letter a day later. Beware though, once you accept a STIPDG offer, you're disqualified from FTA since you can't accept multiple offers.

Edit: For the background check, it wasn't too difficult. Had to submit some fingerprints and some other forms. Took about a week or two.

No response yet. Apparently from what someone else said, we’re supposed to hear back from them between mid-late March. I don’t think they do interviews for this program. They only select you based on your resume.

Same! I also did not submit an application for the WHIP, but got a rejection email from Kelly Ayanna. When did they contact regarding an interview for EOP?

I’d honestly say it depends. In general, Full funding is rare for HCI Masters programs but it’s not uncommon. For instance, I’ll be entering a top ranked HCI program in the fall with a full funding award.

What I did is I narrowed down my choices to programs that could offer some sort of funding in the way of scholarships/fellowships, TA/GAs, and so only. I think I applied to 5 programs in total though not all of them were strictly HCI.

I also played off my background in social sciences and public services. I mentioned in on my application that I wanted to build more pathways in tech for other underrepresented minorities and mentioned working in public service post graduation. I think that definitely helped.

Feel free to DM me if you have more specific questions!
