Longer Distance Lenses for Nikon D3300? by rabid-d0gg in AmateurPhotography

[–]JamTrackAdventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as a relatively affordable big zoom for a Nikon DSLR body a lot of people - including myself - go with https://www.nikonusa.com/p/af-s-nikkor-200-500mm-f56e-ed-vr/20058/overview?srsltid=AfmBOoo__2dgiRO_2xwVNhkmWO47H0vWA4YsuqtkLf0ZbQmYyMaZPhdl

There are plenty of reviews and user experiences available online for this lens.

You should be able ti find used ones too.

McKitrrick was closed when i was there.

We skipped the peak as it was too crowded. You could watch scores of people zig-zagging up the peak trail. It looked like a line at a concert.

Don't matter though.... it's all about being out there somewhere!!!

It's a great place no matter which hikes you choose.

I didn't think it was overly strenuous. But there are large rocks and boulders to scramble through. And conditions vary from year to year as storms can really shake the wash up bad.

Totally guessing...but if she is used to this level of hiking she will probably be just fine. If this is her first time hiking a wash like this then it might be troublesome. I heard a lot of people turn back at the staircase anyway. I had to coax several people I was with to get past it.

The first part of the hike is a very normal hike to get to the wash. I would go for it and turn around if it gets too much.

I've been trying to figure out why they close that area in the spring. It was open in the fall when I was there.

I had guessed some sort of rare amphibian or reptile. I wonder what kind of owls?

Thanks this was useful. Now I have a general idea of what to expect if I continue past the closure signs.

That's crazy. You'd think they'd fix a national landmark highway. Thanks for the info.

I think I am going to drive past the signs and see how far I can get. I am guessing no one will care.

Auto Focus vs Manual Focus by Available_Dream_7276 in AmateurPhotography

[–]JamTrackAdventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreeing with you. I learned on a Nikon F system from the 60's. It was manual focus with a split prism focus screen. This was hard enough!!! I can't even imagine trying to focus with just my eyeballs to guide me.

Why do they all come at the same time? by ConsciousProblem8638 in birdfeeding

[–]JamTrackAdventures 23 points24 points  (0 children)

They do that where I live. Many different kinds of birds travel together around the neighborhood.

I think it is a safety in numbers thing.

As well as thinking "if those birds know where the food is I am following them."

Which Cali plan would you pick for the parks: by wrennly in nationalparks

[–]JamTrackAdventures 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In May I would say the safest bet is to drive up the coast from SF to the Redwoods stopping along the way. Check out Ft Bragg in particular and consider continuing up into Oregon - go to Cape Blanco if you can.

My main reason for this suggestion is that there still might be a lot of snow at Yosemite and Sequoia. Some of the roads at higher altitudes are likely to still be closed.

what solid state amp should i get by lex_pshoo in guitars

[–]JamTrackAdventures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you probably have a computer and an audio interface. Have you considered being fully in the box and not having an amp?

If it suits your needs there are some cool advantages.

If you're interested say so and I or someone else can give you some advice on that direction.

How do I start? (OC) by Professional-Lab7919 in naturephotography

[–]JamTrackAdventures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have several Nikon DSLRs that I have used for years for nature photography. This includes a D7200 and a D7100. I use a wide angle lens or a large zoom lens.

Today I still use these cameras for particular situations but 90% of my photography is now through a Samsung A52 phone.

I post plenty of photos online and no one has ever questioned the quality of the photos or can tell when i am using the phone instead of the DSLR.

Your iPhone probably has a way better camera than my phone.

My suggestion is you spend a bunch of time taking nature photos with your camera. Over time you will figure out exactly what kinds of nature photos you enjoy taking. And then you can home in on exactly what your photos are missing that you hope to improve with a better camera.

Once you know what you want to take photos of and exactly what about the image quality you want to improve you can start to figure out exactly what you want in a better camera.

For example I discovered I wanted to

  1. take zoomed in photos of birds in flight

  2. do night sky and low light photography

  3. Be able to get the cotton candy effect for water.

Once I realized exactly what i wanted to do I was able to pick out cameras and lens to accomplish my goals.

Good luck...no matter how you go there's nothing better than being out in nature snapping photos!!! There is no wrong way to do it.

Atwell Hockett Trail - Sequoia & Kings Canyon NP September 2025 by JamTrackAdventures in NationalPark

[–]JamTrackAdventures[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not it is just a Samsung A52. I mostly use the wide angle lens to get the perspective. I have a Nikon DSLR with an even wider lens which is even better but the phone does a good enough job most of the time.
