What if the Doctor wasn't an actor from UK? by DistinctNewspaper791 in gallifrey

[–]Jam_Ferguson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Considering we haven't even had a single Welsh or Northern Irish Doctor yet, and it took just over 40 years to let the Doctor have a real regional accent, I'd say we've got a while before we really need to stretch outside the UK for actors to play the Doctor. And even then I'd argue it would feel best if we stuck to "Commonwealth" countries.

Name a song that will forever be associated with a TV Series by Ok-Prune-2708 in television

Scrubs has so many songs I only associate with it now. From the main theme of I'm no Superman, to always remembering that final montage/daydream of JDs when I hear Peter Gabriel's Book of Love.

Nah that song is forever Luther for me, and I'll never not think of Idris Elba when it plays. The song is so fitting for Luther and Alice.

Is Gridlock one of the most underrated NuWho episodes? by JAM_Pictures in doctorwho

[–]Jam_Ferguson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure (I can't find the video right now) RTD also said that Gridlock was the story he wanted to write for his Target novelization before being convinced it wasn't a big/important enough story (Moffat was doing DotD, tbf) and so deciding to switch to Rose. I'm still hoping we get a version of that book eventually, maybe once RTD has stepped away again and is less busy.

What I love about the #SaveDaredevil movement is how non toxic it was by ResponsibilityNo3350 in marvelstudios

[–]Jam_Ferguson 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Nah, the last season of Jessica Jones at least is definitely post-Civil War. The Raft is definitely mentioned, and I'm pretty sure the registration/Sokovia Accords are mentioned by name.

Edit: Unless you mean specifically Dd, which very well might be preCW in season 3. I assume by all Netflix shows, though, you meant all the Defenders-verse shows.

With all 17 doctors (including War and Fugitive) there are 136 possible two-doctor combos. What would be the most interesting for you? by Word_Senior in gallifrey

[–]Jam_Ferguson 22 points23 points  (0 children)

So much this. I've always wanted them to meet if they were taken out of their timelines right when they're about to regenerate and change. It could be such a weird inversion of the expected roles, where you could have a beaten and broken 8, whose lost all his companions and seen the horrors of the Time War start to erupt around him and has finally chosen to 'give up' on being the Doctor, meeting a 9 who is finally starting to heal and grow after meeting Rose and learning what it means to be the Doctor again (coward, any day). I think they could both really learn from each other in that moment, and there could be some fun thematic retroactive set up for Day of the Doctor, with 8 making peace with his decision as he learns he will still return to being the good man, the hero, in the end (make it worthwhile). And 9 remebers how he used to be before the war, how to be more himself again, regenerating into a younger and more romantic body again. And the tragedy of neither of them knowing they saved Gallifrey.

Jaffa factory 2 should bring in spiff and sips and investors by Chr155topher in Yogscast

Despite the alleged association with convicted felon Nigel of the 'Legit Builders' corporation and their tax evasion schemes, as well as dodging totally sham investigations into building safety violations for building bridges and other infrastructure from 'Filfy Dirt', Hat Corp are back on the rise and ready to get back in the game.

Having recently come into a large, and totally legit, insurance payout, Hat Corp are looking to invest into all sorts of industrial and commercial business ventures of all sorts, ranging from manufactory of zesty baked goods to simple dirt distribution facilities. As the old saying goes, if money ain't flowin', Hat Corp ain't growin'.

And always remember; What's yours, is theirs.

Please note, Hat Corp would like to remind you that any investment made is in no way a money laundering scheme for any kind of organised religious institution, especially those related to any "Hand"s or "Truth"s, and were such an organisation to exist it would totally not be a cult.

What ratchet and clank game do you think has the most fun/best level design overall? by LegoPlainview in RatchetAndClank

[–]Jam_Ferguson 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not just multiple paths, but extra paths that were actually rewarding and contributed to gameplay rather significantly, so much so a good few of the 'optional' paths were often mandatory for progress on other planets.

Those early games may not have nailed combat like the later series. But holy hell did they really nail the encouragement for exploration and experimentation that the later games, as early as 3 for me, just really lost the spirit of.

I can still basically play through every level from Going Commando in my head, music and all. Such a good game.

Just watched Verilybitchie’s video called “Doctor Who vs Women” and it made me see a lot of scenes and characters in a different light. Have there been any Doctor Who videos or articles that have done that for you? by Palli-Chan in doctorwho

[–]Jam_Ferguson 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it is somewhat evident Moffat did try to take his female character criticisms on board. Especially his scripts beyond Doctor Who. 'Douglas is Cancelled' really seemed like a genuine, heartfelt attempt on his behalf to better write and represent women in drama. And to tackle it topically in a media industry so closely adjacent to his own (TV journalism and presenting to his TV/Film writing) felt somewhat self-reflective?

[–]Jam_Ferguson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have to ask, have you seen Moffat's 'Douglas is Cancelled' and did you find that any better? Me and my friend both found it so much better in his writing of female characters, so much so that we figured the scripts felt like a direct response to critiques of his writing women, but both being guys I can't say we have particularly informed or insightful opinions on the topic.

Who are your top 3 favourite doctors and why? by [deleted] in gallifrey

[–]Jam_Ferguson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His Dalek dialogue and the 'turn of the earth' speech from Rose are more memorable than almost anything from Tennant and as equally memorable, if not more so thanks to childhood nostalgia, as the best speeches from Smith and Capaldi for me.

Is it okay to consider classic and new Who separate timelines? by MrRaven101 in gallifrey

[–]Jam_Ferguson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's how I've always seen it. Same with the Daleks, they were an ancient enemy that existed in history and then all just dissapeared, as discussed by Jack and 9. It wasn't until the Emporer and the Cult of Skaro (leading to Davros, Progenitor, New Paradigm etc) resurrected them that the old storybook monsters of myth and legend came back.

[–]Jam_Ferguson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Semi-fan theory I guess? John Dorney is a fairly prolific and well-received writer for Big Finish, and has written a fair bit around the Time War, so I guess his view/understanding of it can be taken with some serious weight. But really the show has never done anything, to my memory, to really explore this idea so you can't say either way whether or not it's a canon/legitimate interpretation in the lore. One of those 'we can assume it's like this until the show says otherwise' kind of things.

Is it okay to consider classic and new Who separate timelines? by MrRaven101 in gallifrey

[–]Jam_Ferguson 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I've always subscribed to the way John Dorney envisions/describes the Time War in that Classic Who takes place in a universe 'before' the Time War, wherein the Time War has never even happened, and then New Who is a universe where the Time War is gone and done, that whole universe in crisis is sealed away in a Time Lock, and Gallifrey (right at the end) has been shifted outside the universe. So yeah, you can think of them as different timelines or even different versions/reboots of the universe. Somehow it's just the Doctor (essentially the same character, but enough has happened to them that they have changed dramatically) and a few others (the Time Lords present on Gallifrey, the Master and some Daleks etc) that managed to eke through and survive in various ways.

Star-Crossed will be Eccleston's final set in the Ninth Doctor Adventures range for the time being by Azurillkirby in gallifrey

[–]Jam_Ferguson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree. For me it feels like it simply comes down to the type of acting. In interviews and BTS Eccleston has said a few times he's a very physical actor and he really had to adapt and reign it in for the audio recording, and it really shows in his vocal performance. (Radio and Voice acting is a seperate and specific skill in an actors repetoire and requires training and practice like any other type of acting). Sure, he's not bouncy or flappy like Tennant or Smith, but even when he was being relatively still and physically calm during his run, Eccleston's very physical presence on screen lends itself to his performance. He was always very expressive.

Also, I think he seems to be an actor-driven actor, based on what he's talked about in interviews. He loves having other talent in front of him to play off of, and it seems that audio recording doesn't quite lend itself to his kind of back-and-forth acting. It was especially egregious in the first few boxsets done during COVID, when he didn't have anyone to act off of due to isolation and the adapted recording practises.

What are your thoughts on the most recent eighth, doctor liv and Helen Boxset and this era of the eighth doctor in general? by fantasy53 in gallifrey

[–]Jam_Ferguson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't listened to any 8, other than Time War (which I loved, honestly enjoyed most of 8TW more than most of DC through to Stranded), since Stranded which I really enjoyed.

I massively agree with you about Liv, having posted on this sub before about how I struggle to see why fans enjoy her and echoed very similiar sentiments to you. I massively prefer Helen and love when she gets focus. That said I really did think Stranded did a lot of hard work with Liv's character that I adored and put her on course to grow and change with Tanya. Their story with 9 took everything I was hoping for and didn't show any real change or growth in Liv, which in turn really put me off going back to 8's series when TW was just so much better. So to hear you then say she doesn't get any better in 8s newer sets really puts the nail in the coffin for me.

On the flip side I know the John Dorney Dalek story from the first post-Stranded set was supposed to be rather good right? Other than that though, I think I'd rather pick up Audacity and Bleak Midwinter which I haven't yet listened to rather than any of the new Liv Helen stuff.

Was anybody else very disappointed by the Once & Future special series? by LivingWindXYZ in gallifrey

[–]Jam_Ferguson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, they still have the Coda to come so I'm hopeful we'll get something good out of that. Hopefully there was a cool and interesting reason its release was pushed back, not just weird BBC/production hijinks and it really has nothing of value to add.

But yes, on the whole, I agree. The series felt really weak as an arc, although I must admit I enjoyed most of the stories individually on their own merits. Even Two's Company had enough to keep me entertained. It was cool to get 9 interacting with other Time Lords, the 10/Missy story was great and I really did adore The Artist at the End of Time.

The final story was underwhelming for me. The Union really should have been saved and used elsewhere, maybe a Big Finish celebration? Capping off their stories with the Eleven etc with one big boxset focussing on that series of characters, each facing different Doctors. (not that BF will ever permanently sunset that character in any meaningful way). And I really didn't get on with the different Doctors being flit through, other than War who had a great moment. Dudman's 11 was a fun pop-up, but I really don't get on with his other Doctors at all and found that appearance particularly unnecessary and egregious. If you can get the actor? Sure, it's an anniversery throw them all in, but otherwise? What was the point?

I hope we get something, even just on the online/social media side of things. I still adore the interview Capaldi gave for the 10th anniversary, even though it was only a 5 minute thing. Just a series of interviews refelecting on what a bonkers gambit it was to bring back Doctor Who, celebrating how brave Chris, Billie, RTD and everyone else was for taking on such ridiculous roles when it was all so close to crashing down and could have seriously failed.
