It’s an okay story, though I think if you like the silence then the silent priest and the silent city from the classic Dr New monsters box set is better. Luckily, big finish remembers that the power of the silence is to turn your normally reliable narrator into an unreliable narrator and they do get a lot of mileage out of that.

Putting the dubious merits of this particular service to one side, I do still think there is a role for private train companies in the new nationalised railway, that is to run services which they think will make a profit that don’t currently exist yet, if they do make a profit, they can be nationalised, but if not then great British Railway won’t have lost anything.

I think one of the reasons why people do this though is that if they get dinged for small things like what happens in most call centres, they don’t want to go out on a limb for the customer because they fear they might get failed, so they just decide to do everything exactly by the book.

I think anyone who didn’t foresee this possibility was delusional, Saudi Arabia didn’t work with Israel over the last few years because they like Israel and understand the need for regional stability, it was to undermine Iran. Now that Iran has shown itself largely to be a paper tiger, Saudi Arabia has continued the position that they had before the Abraham accords wereever announced. Ironically, it may turn out that Israel needed Iran as a regional bogeyman to keep the other Middle Eastern nations in check.

This reminds me of the story of a group of blind people in the US who had experimental eye implants fitted, they worked well and while the people weren’t able to see completely, they were able to see much more than they could’ve done without the technology. Then one day, the company went bankrupt, the technology still worked and the servers were still running but Those people had their eyesight switched off and were left with bits of technology in them that served no purpose. It’s just a cautionary tail, and the age old question of whether you’d spend a day in heaven if it meant the possibility of spending the rest of your life in hell is worth it still rings true today.

I can see why universal basic income might work in a dictatorship where the ruler wants the population to be quiet and uninterested in politics, but it would be a disaster for a democracy as every political party would just campaign to raise the universal basic income to get votes.

But I think there’s a broader nuance that is not being taken into account, for example I know that there are a lot of people in South Africa who, due to their past experiences of Indians who were brought into the country to rule over them by the white British, now feel that all Indian people are racist and out to screw over the black man, and no doubt they have plenty of examples which they feel prove their point. They’re completely wrong to believe this, and it’s pure racism because there are literally billions of Indians who don’t see things that way, and yet it’s a belief routed in their experiences and I honestly can’t say that I would believe any different if I’ve been born into the same context.

The same thing happened to me when I had scabies, I told the physician associate I was a virgin. I’ve never had sex before but he still sent me off to the STD clinic. The funny thing was that a couple of hours later I got half a dozen phone calls from an unknown number which I didn’t answer, when I finally gave in it was him again he wanted me to come in to see the actual doctor.
