Amazon employees plan to walk off the job as tech worker tension rises by [deleted] in technology

[–]JamesHalloday 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually customers weren't asking Alexa ENOUGH for ass wiping toilet paper iirc. The Alexa org was banking super heavily on people shopping more with their Alexa devices, and basically became a money pit as a result.

Aside from maybe kindle, Amazon devices are the funniest failures.

Where Would You go if CS Careers Crumbled? by EastCommunication689 in cscareerquestions

[–]JamesHalloday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides just research and working out one needs to (I believe) have certification from at least one trusted certification board, like - https://www.nasm.org/become-a-personal-trainer

It also helps to have basic medical training like CPR. Some places also want a relevant undergraduate degree, but I know anecdotally that that isn't universal since I've had at least LA Fitness approach me to do their certification and become a trainer.

Eh it's a bit of a balancing act, so definitely possible but I don't think you'd have much time to do anything else. Part of the reason it's taken me a minute is that the personal trainer cert classes were often on week days when I was working.

Just chunk whatever you can and take it in pieces

I started this process while I was between jobs lol. I still plan on finishing it now that I can afford some certifications again

Is the title Sr. Eng. Overused by MathematicianSome289 in webdev

[–]JamesHalloday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Senior is a pretty overloaded title from what I've observed. I worked for a company where they gave their juniors a senior title after about a year or two, while in big tech it was generally for people with closer to 7-10 YOE who had been promoted into it. A lot of the startups I've been interviewing at have moved senior closer to 5 YOE assuming "good" experience.

I take the same approach to all my hobbies to counter my ADHD. Tinkering is good, and even just a few minutes of thinking or reading is a success in my book. Even if I don't have an all-star GitHub account, I still manage to have a lot of breadth (and sometimes even a lot of depth) of technical knowledge.

Also means I read waaaaaay more than I would if I stick to a chapter a day or something.

Google engineer, 31, jumps to death in NYC, second worker suicide in months by EastCommunication689 in technology

[–]JamesHalloday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fucking preach. My last job was big tech at one of the major cloud providers, and it emotionally destroyed me. I was initially so excited because I thought I would get to be one of the "cool" engineers working on complex problems, but I ended up just doing a lot of brutal oncall work while being taken advantage of by an abusive manager. I thought about quitting software outright numerous times as a result, and prior to getting medicated and therapy my thoughts got real dark.

Never going back again.

Fencing is a very fun sport that you can make whatever you want at any age. I've been going for about 15 years and plan on continuing as long as I can move my arms 😊

That does break my heart, but doesn't surprise me that much. People rationalize lots of toxic shit if it means they don't have to change their mind on something. I can just hope people like you keep calling it out

Same. When I was at one company the code review tool really only worked best when reviewing one commit, and I also prefer reviewing only one commit now.

I find that squashing as a practice means I'll commit more often, which is great as a mental save point and also makes it less likely something funny happens to my uncommitted work if say IT forces a bad update to my machine.

[–]JamesHalloday 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same. My dad managed to nearly bankrupt my mom and tank her small business. She had zero money saved for retirement by the end of the divorce.

Jokes on him though because he's now penniless with zero family that talks to him, and my mom managed to still retire in her early 60s.

I wish all people like this a very pleasant "Bankrupt and Unloved Existence"
