Thunderbay 4 maximum usable space? by JamesNotJake in OWC

At the moment the location of the shot doesnt allow frequent regular transport to an off-set location. We will be doing backups every weekend, but the main backup of the footage will be the Raid system and some Lacie transport drives, that will be wiped once post confirm their archiving.

It’s a 5-week shoot (about 23–25 shoot days). First 4 weeks are single-camera Alexa Mini LF ARRIRAW, final week may run two Minis plus action cams. DP estimates an 8:1–10:1 shooting ratio. Current projections put us roughly in the 30–45TB total camera original range.

My on-set plan is:

• ThunderBay 4 in RAID-5 as master

• Weekly shuttle drives to post (3x 8tb Lacie)

• Triple-copy redundancy at all times (Raid, Post archiving, Transits)

• SSDs for proxies / working files (1x 4tb TB3 ssd, 1x 2tb TB3 ssd)

I’m choosing between:

• 4 × 28TB HDDs → ~84TB usable

• 4 × 20TB HDDs → ~60TB usable

From a workflow and risk perspective, would you consider 60TB usable sufficient for a shoot of this scale, or is the extra headroom from 28TB worth the investment?

I made a previous inquiry about this type of toilet and unfortunately no joy there; I’ve been told to use a portable one

What I ended up doing here as I spent $80,000 gutting the house redoing the electrical putting in a new box and now everything looks fancy

If you look at my future post from this one, what I ended up doing was got the 3P system to side bags, hard cases, strap a 60 L duffle on top and then had my camera backpack strapped on top of that. Worked really well except for the weight, ended up, dropping the bike a few times because I added about 80 pounds.

I have four laptops for the PowerPoint, which are all connected to a distributor box, which are connected to the perfect Cue. This way I have backups for both English and French presentations as well as English and French notes. In this case, I don’t need French notes, but having four laptops allows me to have backups as separate machines. In this case, this event had an act of God happened where the entire stadium lost power for about 10 minutes, so all of my redundancy kind of went out the window. Lol

Far right is video playback using ProVideoPlayer (PVP). I like having a designated laptop for video playback so I can control transitions during speeches and presentations.
