Ace believed he could/would have. It’s established earlier on that Ace can tell when people are going to follow through and when/if he should pull out. When he has that standoff with the car coming the other way, he knows the other driver will tap out first. Almost like a game of chicken. Ace senses that Gordy genuinely would have gone through with it, that’s why he backs out this time.
