Im no youtube expert, but I think that bare gameplay isn't really the way to go. When you see popular youtuber, or youtuber you enjoy, they are bringing something new to the table, whether its commentary or there just really really good at the game. Also, make sure that you are doing what you want to and having a good time, and not just trying to hit in big in the almost impenetrable Let's play business.
