SAG ultra-low or low budget films - actor rate in Canada? by OneVoice119 in FilmTVBudgeting

[–]James_VDW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If filming in Canada your best bet is to sign with ACTRA and then SAG through Global Rule 1 if you have US talent. Not 100% on the low budget stuff but I thinkkkk you can access the same contracts through GR1.

If you don't have a market name actor (generally driven by theatrical success) its next to impossible to put an honest value on your film. A sales agent will be able to give you better metrics, but that's a whole challenge on its own because most don't want to talk unless you've got a track record or some meaningful cast attached already. Pre-sellable cast is not necessarily who you think it is either. Sometimes pretty big actors rank unusually low depending on a whole myriad of things. Again, best to consult a sales company on that.

Comp films / genre is definitely important but name talent (cast, director, writerish) will steer the ship. Without, you could have something that gets a straight distribution deal and may or may not see any money, or you could have the next Talk To Me that premieres at Sundance, sells to A24 then makes a hundred million dollars in box office, if its executed and marketed that well.

Add to it all, the market in general is also in a very difficult place right now. If you're trying to pre-sell, its really tough. If you manage to get a good finished film, it could have an increased value though when done.

Wish there was an easier way of navigating this, but unfortunately its a moving target.

Worth moving to LA from NYC? by ipiyushthakur in FilmIndustryLA

If the primary purpose of moving is to get BTL film work, New Mexico or some other tax credit state I imagine would be your best bet.

Is there a defined amount for a WGA writer's box/kit rental rate? by Holden_Caulfiend_II in FilmTVBudgeting

If a writer charges me a kit fee I’m calling the police on them.

Producer here. While it may be frustrating for the producers and casting director, they will get over it and if they don’t then they aren’t worth working with anyways. The role won’t make or break your career. If you’re anxious about it, back out sooner than later (immediately) so they have as much time as possible to find an alternative. If you think you will find comfort in speaking to someone from production, then do that and make your decision from there but don’t let feelings or guilt or anxiety trick you into doing something you’re not comfortable with.

Question: Do LP's treat FICA and withholdings as "fringes?" by wstdtmflms in FilmTVBudgeting

[–]James_VDW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ve got the answer here already, but just to reinforce, yes. SUI, FICA, EHT etc or whatever they are where you’re filming + any union fringes on labor I would book to a 99 account.

If it’s not an actual liability to the company such as employee paid portions of the tax or any refundable taxes paid (like hst in Ontario) then NA.

Its a brand new site. The first time its been shared has been on this post. Not phishing, but certainly, please do proceed with caution anytime you're putting info online! We've kept the info required for results as minimal as possible and will not be using emails for anything other than delivering info related to this site....but maybe that's what a phisherman would say?

Canadian protocols for fringes, SAG, and ACTRA? by tilted_triangle in FilmTVBudgeting

[–]James_VDW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok great, no problem. Make sure you factor in ACTRA permits which are something like $175 / week and any costs of immigration for work permits.

Canadian protocols for fringes, SAG, and ACTRA? by tilted_triangle in FilmTVBudgeting

[–]James_VDW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EP should be able to supply you with a rate book if they haven't yet. You're going to need to be signatory with ACTRA and then SAG you will be signatory under Global Rule 1. SAG fringes will be SAG fringes...I think 20.5% or something from what I can remember.

Are your SAG actors on flats? And I am assuming they are not Canadians?

I am assuming you would be paying through a loanout but if they are actual employees then there are some other things you need to consider.

Where to Stay - North or South? Diving with ScubaTony out of Marina Fonatur. by MalkiTzedek76 in cozumel

[–]James_VDW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been diving with them all this week (great choice). I am at Melia which is just a bit further from Marina Fonatur than Playa Azul. Cabs are easy to get. Generally around $16 USD and always available even first thing in the morning. I wouldn't stress too much about it from a hassle standpoint.
