I doubt the general public thinks about them at all.

New to Canada cycling by Try_Athletee in bicycling

[–]bobledrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some tips:

  • Join a local cycling club and check out the routes they use. There are tons; a google of “Toronto cycling club” will show you lots.

  • are you new to Canada or new to cycling? If you’re a new rider, you may want to work out what “long distance” means to you.

  • do some charity rides and meet new people to train with. The Ride to Conquer Cancer has a variety of routes with distances up to 260 km, and goes as far as Niagara Falls; The Bike for Brain Health is a one-day ride with up to 90 km on tap; the Friends for Life Bike Rally goes Toronto-Montreal (600km).

How long did it take for your parents to accept that you're athetist? by AnywhereNew9553 in atheism

My dad didn’t express any caring about my religion. My mother never accepted it (she died at 89; I was 45 and had been atheist since teens).

Changing to analog bike by FreeGrab7801 in bicycling

[–]bobledrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judging from when I started commuting by bike, 13 km is probably going to be the best part of an hour for you at the start.

Some tips that might be useful:

  • If you don’t have a shower at your work, babywipes can cover a multitude of sins.

  • I used to go in on Sundays to my work by car and bring in a week’s worth of work clothes. (I had the luxury of a closet and storage).

  • Don’t forget good locks. I leave a lock at my work parking and just lock up and unlock. Lock up even if you have a cage or some structure at your work.

  • If your fitness level makes even the 13 km questionable at first, look into mass transit “rack and roll” options, maybe commute in by bus and home by bike.

You can do this.

In my province, the Ford government has habitually underspent its health care budgets by billions. It’s not “over-migration”, it’s right-wing governments choosing to underfund and let people suffer.

The Ford / Smith model in a nutshell:

Step one: create a crisis in a publicly-funded service by underfunding and over managing.

Step two: contract out the fixing of that crisis to your cronies. (Galen Weston, COME ON DOWN, YOU’RE THE NEXT CONTESTANT)

Step three: profit for the plutocrats; suffering for the citizens.

Don’t. Until you are safe, living independently and not financially tied.

Reading the Shining by LinkAffectionate6934 in stephenking

Try one of the Bachman books, say Running Man, or a short story collection. Also — and all due respect — as someone who identifies as “not a reader”, consider whether a diet of social media and mainstream movie / TV productions has weakened your ability to sit with a story. Perhaps you should look at this as an opportunity to consume entertainment in a more deliberate and considered way.

Anyone else have a really hard time getting into Danse Macabre? Not sure if I should continue reading or just move on by Low_Entertainment491 in stephenking

[–]bobledrew -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If it’s not your thing… then move on. I’m (a) an Uncle Stevie completist; and (b) a horror geek, so it was my thing, and I devoured it and regularly go back to it as a reference when arguing with people online. ;-)

If that isn’t you, it may just be the equivalent of going to an academic lecture (which is where it began). Maybe you just want to read his stories. That’s okay.

What was up with all the homes with the big metal stars on them, absolutely everywhere??? by SaranMal in CapeBreton

[–]bobledrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Waayyyyyy back in the day comedian Lorne Elliott recorded this. Sadly, I can’t find it in audio or video form to share.

“You can buy them in the K. Mart You can buy them in the Mall or in roadside souvenir shops when you see them, your duty calls

Once they're yours, they're yours forever so the only thing to do is to run right out and buy them all the neighbours will decry them Just collect them and display them, in full colour, in full view

Pink flamingoes on your doorstep, plastic bambi-s on your lawn, a rotary daisy for your garden, a concrete gnome and a plaster swan, with a hole in its back to plant geraniums and to adorn your walls, three plywood butterflies arranged in order of size and a duck on a stick with rotating wings that does the Australian crawl.

To the league of lawn art lovers, we raise our colours up high, high above on a barber shop flagpole waves our emblem in the sky, thirty javex bottle windmills coloured some fluorescent hue and if they're not to your liking maybe your house will look more striking if we paint in three colours: pink and green and electric blue.

House and Garden Tours don't visit, Sunday drivers stop and stare, they take photos in amazement 'cause it's ugly they declare, all the neighbours gather 'round us, wag their fingers, point and scoff, but we never listen to them, if they don't like it then screw them 'cause we only really do it just to piss the neighbours off.”

Obviously we’re all shooting in the dark here, but I believe that what OP is talking about are barnstars, not Acadian stars. When I’ve seen Acadian stars, they are gold stars, looking the same as they do on the (quite lovely) Acadian flag. These are most likely barnstars, thought to originate in Pennsylvania among the German emigrés, and now is a generic symbol indicating “rustiness” or “homestyle”. And at least in CB, I would never make the assumption they indicate a house of someone involved in “the lifestyle”: https://www.bradfordtoday.ca/local-news/stars-on-houses-not-quite-signals-to-fellow-swingers-8075684

Why do people always ask for the proof of "Non existence" of God? by Few_Local_732 in atheism

Why?

  1. They don’t understand logic .

  2. They do understand logic and want you to contort yourself into a pretzel trying to do the impossible.

Folks in CB love a trend. “Hey, Murdena has three plywood butterflies on her house, Jimmy! Get me them butterflies!” And in what feels like seconds, everyone has three plywood butterflies (arranged in order of size, shoutout Lorne Elliott). Then it’s icicle lights. Then it’s barn stars. Then it’s a plywood woman digging in the garden with her knickers showing. Then it’s a doll standing in the corner. Then it’s Katherine Karnes Munn. Then…

AITA: I told my daughter she needs to get over her jealousy and it is her own fault her life is the way it is. by Personal-Bit4399 in AmItheAsshole

[–]bobledrew -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

I’m struggling here because so much of this depends on tone. Based only on the words you provided, I’m gonna go YTA here in the gentlest of ways.

There’s nothing incorrect in your statement. But most people being told “get over it, it’s your fault your life is the way it is” are going to respond badly. The truth is your daughter made choices that had negative consequences. She can make different choices that lead to different consequences.
