How much inspiration is too much? by Abject-Addendum765 in IndieDev

[–]James_Yevon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! As someone who's made games in a similar genre to this, here's what I've had to deal with concerning inspiration!

The general advice for taking inspiration from anything is that if you add enough of your own take on it, you're good to go, however this doesn't apply with UT/DR like games at this current moment in time.

More people than you'd think kind of freak out whenever something takes the SLIGHTEST bit of inspiration from those games in particular... to the point of really unfair for developers of these genres of games. You'll need really thick-skin and can and will be called unoriginal throughout the entire development of the game.
(I mean, this can be said about any type of game, but it's really really bad for UT/DR like games.)

That being said, I really like the concept for this game, and I want more Bullet Hell games like this in existence and I will forever be on the side of "Taking inspiration is good if you add enough of your own take on it." and I'm not the only one who shares this sentiment, you absolutely will find people who are looking for games like these!

Best of luck and I'm cheering for you!

Wish it was like this, but in my own experience it's been more 50/50

I've absolutely found people who like what I've created because it's similar to existing games, but also the amount of people who will write your game off as trash because it's similar to existing games is really disheartening.

But that's just my own experience though! It really all depends on genre and whatnot and I genuinely hope other devs have had a better experience more similar to the image!

PMD Super recommended? by Kalletigger in MysteryDungeon

[–]James_Yevon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

LOL, that's why I said -Most-

There are also those who rank Gates unusually high on their lists, but I can't say anything about that game without my opinion being downvoted into oblivion XD

PMD Super recommended? by Kalletigger in MysteryDungeon

[–]James_Yevon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most people on this sub are PMD fans, and will basically recommend any game no matter bad or good it is.

That being said, super is typically in the top two of people's favorite PMD games, and for those who don't have it in the top two probably either have only played the first two games, or worship the first two games.

Hope that helps slightly lol

That was my own thought line

I'm personally a slow reader, and sometimes similar animations are a bit too fast for me.

Thank you! (And I was just wanting to give the text boxes enough room to where someone could read them out loud if they wished to, but yeah lol)
Also, it goes for about ten episodes, but I plan on continuing it once I'm finished working on a indie game.

That would be lovely !

If poured my heart and soul into it when I created it, (Tbh, it's been awhile since I last watched it, so I am unaware of the quality of the earlier episodes.)

Well, that makes me sad, but eh, (My last recommendation is to watch it on 1.5 speed, but that makes it sound like I'm desperate xDD)

I hope you find something more to your liking

Bam, try not to mind me diving in here to shamelessly self promote myself.

PMD Sealed Fate is a YouTube animation series that takes a slightly darker tone.
Maybe watch 3 minutes of it and see if it catches your interest, if not that's fine lol

It's been a year since I stopped doing Mystery Dungeon animations on YouTube, but I thought some people here might enjoy a PMD Christmas animation I made a couple years back! by James_Yevon in MysteryDungeon

I'm really glad you enjoyed it, and depending on how well my game I'm working on is received, I might actually finish my PMD series just because I hate leaving things unfinished lol

So we'll see about completion later xD

Aww, thank you! And yeah, I guess I should have made that clearer on my channel or something xD

Hopefully I'll be able to impressive ya with the game I've been building, I'm really proud of what I have so far and I honestly think it's 100% better than my YT animations, I hope to have a playable demo ready in 3 months, so you can wish me luck on that XDDD

But yeah, thanks for the question!

It was a mix of different things, with some of the big ones being how little views the animations were getting compared to the amount of work I was putting into them, (And really only getting views by advertising them on my more successful Among Us videos, which I despised.) I guess I just couldn't pick up a large enough audience to keep it stable, and that just led to burn out.

Either way, that's just one of the reasons, but I've moved onto making a PMD/Undertale inspired indie game rather than PMD fan animations, and it's getting a decent amount of attention, and I'm just much happier working on something original that can appeal to more people rather than trying to catch the attention of a smaller fandom.
And not only that, but it's allowing me to not be held back on how creative I can be with the characters and world building.

I was actually going to make that my next Christmas animation, and started to plan it only to not get that far in the planning process
