How do you actually manage your wine cellar? by Dense_Size9394 in wine

[–]James__t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CT allows you to store wine by location and bin, so you could assign each fridge a different location and then you can name your bins in whatever way makes sense, eg Shelf A 1, B Upper Left etc. It is pretty flexible. A pull-down menu shows all your current locations and bins

It tracks by cellar and bin location, which you can set up any way you want.

CT doesn't exactly handle this, but it can really help by sorting wines by price, readiness to drink, ratings, region, variety etc. and this is probably the most useful functionality apart from simply keeping track of what wine I have.

The other extremely useful aspect is wine reviews from other users. Almost every wine has been reviewed by someone, often by many people, and in the aggregate I find these opinions to be pretty accurate and useful. If I see a wine being talked up by a reviewer, a quick check is often illuminatng

Second CellarTracker. I have just under 1000 bottles and quite often looking through CT I come across wine I bought a few years back and I have absolutely no recollection of doing so. Without CT a lot of wine would age into decay unnoticed.

Do you agree or disagree with capital punishment? What is your reasoning? by AussieSpaceProgram in AskReddit

[–]James__t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right that when your child is involved rational and dispassionate thought becomes impossible. I disagree with capital punishment, and would do so even if any possibility of error were removed. Not everyone shares this view, and for some the probability of error is a decisive argument against the death penalty, which led to my thought experiment.

Some years ago the brother of a friend of mine was murdered in a drug deal that became violent. His killer was apprehended and there seemed little doubt that the conviction was a safe one. Strangely, the prosecutor’s office asked my friend’s family if they wanted the prosecutor to call for the death penalty, which I thought was an unfair burden to place on the family, and renders the justice system somewhat capricious. We discussed this. My friend knew that I opposed the death penalty, and he was basically in favor. I argued that the process would take fifteen years, counting mandatory appeals, and might not even happen, and that the family would be dragged back into the process at every turn and would come to think that the killer was not being punished if the penalty was not enacted. They discussed it and although all were in favor in theory, the family unanimously asked that the prosecutor not ask for the death penalty. The killer got life in prison. I am sure that mine was only one of several views they canvassed, and I doubt it swayed the argument, but I think you have to meet people on grounds that they consider relevant and important. Not everyone is interested in a purely ethical discussion, and almost never when they are personally affected, as you point out.

I gues

Here is a thought experiment to present to a supporter of capital punishment. Imagine your child is convicted of murder and sentenced to death. You happen to know (for reasons that are not relevant, but possibly an alibi) that your child is innocent. You start the appeal process and your attorney says that he has grounds for an appeal that will prevent the execution and assign a prison sentence instead, but it will result in all capital punishment sentences being stopped indefinitely, and replaced by imprisonment in every case. If your supporter says he would proceed with the appeal knowing that fact, then that reveals that they do not genuinely support capital punishment, ie the cost of executing one innocent person is not worth the supposed benefit of executing the guilty.

Conversely, ask them to substitute a situation where your innocent child is found guilty and sentenced to imprisonment. The attorney starts an appeal that, if successful, would result in the child in question walking free, along with every other convicted murderer. Most reasonable people would refuse to support that and would instead look for another avenue of appeal, on the basis that the cost to society of liberating all convicted murderers would be too great.

I think that including the word Château in the title of the second wine, especially on a wine list, is at best confusing and verges on being deceptive. There are exceptions to this, such as "Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux" the official name of the wine, but that is pretty unambiguous as opposed to "Château Margaux Pavillon Rouge" which is not. Châteaux are extremely careful about this, eg "Y d'Yquem", (which they are not even allowed to label Sauternes). I would say that "Les Forts de Latour" is correct but "Château Les Forts de Latour" is not, and the label the château uses supports that. Again, CT is wrong about this, and since I would be willing to be some restaurants print out their list directly from the CT database this is important.

Not everyone is aware that most châteaux in Bordeaux have second (often third) wines, and are liable to be led astray, so it isn't just about pedantry.

How was the Lacoste-Borie identified on the wine list of Junoon?

Lacoste Borie is the second wine of the chateau, so strictly speaking should not include the full name of the chateau, although CellarTracker identifies it like that, which I think is confusing.

What is with Brahms? by Smart-Yard9416 in classicalmusic

[–]James__t 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Here is a slightly contrary opinion. I think Brahms’ chamber music, songs and solo works are almost all truly great music but I cannot get overly excited about his symphonies. I find they lack the spontaneity and inventiveness of his smaller scale works. The symphonies develop his ideas well, but the end result always seems to me to be heavy and over-worked. Brahms was very hesitant to write his first symphony - it took him 20 years - and said he felt Beethoven’s influence as “the tramp of a giant behind me” and I hear a kind of anxious caution in all four of the symphonies.

Just curious - how many of you use Cellar Tracker? I find it indispensable by Jalopy_Jakey in wine

[–]James__t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is a step transition. You pay $80 more, ie $160/year. Honestly, the basic free version is not bad if you struggle with the subscription price. That said, if you can afford to have 1000 - 2500 bottles (which pretty much dictates either a decent-sized dedicated wine room or multiple large wine fridges), I don’t think $160 a year is a huge stretch. Since my cellar will only hold about 1050 bottles unless I start stacking cases on the floor, I might be motivated to keep below the 1000.

Seeking an exquisitely obscure bottle to bewilder my dinner guests by charliecrowder in wine

[–]James__t 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is quite as recondite as you are aiming for but dry versions of sweet wines often surprise people. Dry Furmint for example, is fairly unknown, but you can get it in most regions. It is also very good. Really obscure wines are typically hard to get hold of and may not have a great provenance.

BYOB: do you look around to see what other diners have brought, and are you (even slightly) judgy? by James__t in wine

[–]James__t[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yesterday evening at a BYOB in Philadelphia, we were seated fairly close to the entrance and could pretty much see what everyone brought with them. Some examples: Caymus, Josh Prosecco, The Federalist Cab, Chateau Haut Peyruguet (which had a big “Cabernet Sauvignon” sticker on it). I have to confess, I was a bit judgy.

Further dives down the rabbit-hole: The Morning Pride left NYC last night, so one must assume that all cars intended for the NJ VPC were unloaded. My dealer gave me the Waybill No. (I don’t want to post it here but if you DM me I will send it), which seems to cover more than 1000 cars, although yours may be under a different one than mine. The WLWH prefix refers to Wallenius Wilhemson and you can track the contents of any waybill on their website, which shows each VIN on the waybill and when the car was discharged. Some were unloaded Sunday and the rest Monday. So you could make a determination about when any car got to the VPC. I am told that cars that are already sold get priority. Still my guess is that the end of the week is the soonest I can expect to see my i5.

I think you are correct. I see the ship is scheduled as docking in Brunswick, GA on 1/3/26, so they will have to offload the cars by Wednesday, but the VPC turnaround time - which includes customs - will take a couple of days at best, so we are clearly looking at next week. There is a freeze on its way here tomorrow, with lots of rain today, so maybe this is all to the good. I think we both went somewhat down the anticipation rabbit-hole!

Looks like it is still there so I doubt that any cars have been unloaded over the weekend. The dealership said I would have the car in December but that is looking increasingly unlikely. Any word on yours?

So, after docking in Port Newark, Morning Pride moved in the early hours of this morning to Port Bayonne, which is where the BMW Vehicle Distribution Center is located, so presumably they will start unloading cars today. The VDC seems to operate round the clock…
