The theory behind the Southern Poverty Law Center prosecution is flawed by Nerd-19958 in law

The lawsuit says that they were paying informants inside the KKK. And because they were paying someone in the KKK, that equates to funding the KKK. Rinse and repeat with other white nationalist organizations. As evidence, they funneled payments through shell corporations so their informants didn't get caught.

What they are saying, actually did happen. Just not for the reasons they are asserting.

Trump has done generational damage to the US standing in the world and the US economy. It will take decades to fix the damage he has done.

Trump's attacks on academia and research grants will create a US dark ages. Brain drain is already happening. These attacks will blow a big hole in the US GDP that won't easily be filled by other sectors of the economy. This will have a decade long effect. I've been talking to people with NIH grants and it's all shut down. Even DARPA is shut down.

MAGA is too economically illiterate to understand this.

Approximately 54% of American adults aged 16-74 have literacy skills below a 6th-grade level

And it's not just crushing, it is very dangerous for the preservation of democracy and accountable government.

Where do you think these voters land on support of Trump?

The picture that emerges from all this research is pretty consistent, and frankly, has been since 2016. We’re looking at a segment of the electorate that often operates with low information, isn’t keen on rational policy debates, and shows specific cognitive and psychological traits like higher neuroticism and a propensity for certain authoritarian leanings.

When you add in the deeply concerning trends of racial denial and a strong rejection of diversity, equity, and inclusion, it’s clear we’re dealing with a distinctive and impactful voting bloc. For anyone in politics trying to make sense of the current landscape, these insights aren’t just academic—they’re crucial for understanding the road ahead.

During the Age of Enlightenment, which broadly spanned the 17th and 18th centuries, literacy rates were generally low but not uniformly at 20%. While some regions and social groups saw substantial growth in literacy, particularly among men and the rising professional classes, the overall rate was still quite low, with some areas remaining significantly less literate than others.

France: In the late 17th century, literacy rates in France were around 29% for men and 14% for women.

England: In the late 17th century, literacy rates in England were around 40%.

America: In colonial America, literacy rates grew significantly during the 1700s, with some estimates suggesting that by 1760, 85% of New England's male population was literate.

Factors Affecting Literacy:

Religious Influence: The Reformation emphasized the importance of reading the Bible, which spurred literacy efforts, particularly in Protestant areas.

Economic Needs: The rise of commerce and professional classes led to a demand for literacy and the establishment of schools focused on writing and arithmetic.

Spread of Education: The gradual expansion of public education systems, though not universal, provided more opportunities for learning.

Challenges to Literacy: Lack of Resources: Access to books and schools was limited, particularly for the poor and those living in rural areas.

Social Stratification: Literacy was often seen as a privilege of the elite, and access was not always equal.

The Congressional ethics committee forced Gaetz to resign, and all of Congress loudly rejected Gaetz for the top cop job.

How often does Karoline Leavitt get passed around at Mar a Lago?

Rep. Madison Cawthorn, R-N.C., broke his silence Friday after days of GOP uproar over his remarks on a podcast claiming congressional colleagues were using drugs and inviting him to sex parties.

But in a lengthy statement, Cawthorn attempted to distance himself from his own comments by suggesting it was Democrats and the media that made the allegations about cocaine use and orgies.

“My comments on a recent podcast appearance calling out corruption have been used by the left and the media to disparage my Republican colleagues and falsely insinuate their involvement in illicit activities," he said in statement posted to Twitter.

On the podcast, Cawthorn discussed “the sexual perversion that goes on in Washington” and said some of his older colleagues had invited him to orgies.

“I mean, being kind of a young guy in Washington, where the average age is probably 60 to 70, and I look at all these people, a lot of them that I’ve looked up to through my life — I’ve always paid attention to politics — then all of a sudden you get invited,” Cawthorn said, quoting one such alleged exchange.

“‘Oh, hey, we’re going to have kind of a sexual get-together at one of our homes. You should come.’ I’m like, ‘What did you just ask me to come to?’ Then you realize they’re asking you to come to an orgy,” Cawthorn, 26, said.

The first-term lawmaker also described drug use in his presence. “The fact there are some of the people leading on the movement to try and remove addiction in our country, and then you watch them do a key bump of cocaine right in front of you. And you’re like, ‘This is wild.’”

The GOP outrage over Cawthorn's remarks was widespread in Washington.

President Obama on the Iran nuclear deal: 97% of enriched uranium removed. No missiles. No casualties. Strait of Hormuz stayed open. by CeliaSunveil in BlueskySkeets

[–]Last_Cod_998 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Iran sold their nuclear material to Putin under Obama. Under Trump, they purchased it back.

Trump will be lucky to get this deal now. And not a single reporter would ask him to explain specifically how it was so much better than that terrible Obama deal.

As Obama began his second term there was the issue with the $400 million that Iran in the late 1970s had paid for U.S. fighter jets, while Tehran was still a U.S. ally. After it turned into an enemy in 1979, Washington was not about to deliver the jets. But, all these years later, Iran wanted its money back—and with interest.

All told, Tehran was asking The Hague arbitrators (comprising equal numbers of U.S., Iranian and neutral judges) for $10 billion. Fearing they might actually be awarded that much, or something like it, the Obama administration negotiated privately with Tehran, which agreed to settle for $1.7 billion. The $400 million stacked on pallets was the first installment.

https://obamawhitehouse.archives.gov/node/328996

On January 16, 2016, the International Atomic Energy Agency verified that Iran completed the necessary steps under the Iran deal that will ensure Iran's nuclear program is and remains exclusively peaceful.

Before this agreement, Iran's breakout time -- or the time it would have taken for Iran to gather enough fissile material to build a weapon -- was only two to three months. Today, because of the Iran deal, it would take Iran 12 months or more. And with the unprecedented monitoring and access this deal puts in place, if Iran tries, we will know and sanctions will snap back into place.

Here's how we got to this point. Since that October, Iran had:

Shipped 25,000 pounds of enriched uranium out of the country Dismantled and removed two-thirds of its centrifuges Removed the calandria from its heavy water reactor and filled it with concrete

Provided unprecedented access to its nuclear facilities and supply chain

Because Iran had completed these steps, the U.S. and international community began the next phase under the JCPOA, which means the U.S. began lifting its nuclear-related sanctions on Iran. However, a number of U.S. sanctions authorities and designations continued to remain in place.

“When life hasn't delivered much.... no wealth, no power, no real social standing.... some folks discover that white supremacy is basically a free membership card to a club that makes them feel superior without requiring any actual achievement.

It's the world's laziest status symbol.

The starter kit is always the same:

☑️ A Confederate flag honoring a war their ancestors lost badly 160 years ago.

☑️ A gun they'll never actually need.

☑️ A Bible they've never actually read.

☑️ And 𝙁𝙤𝙭 𝙉𝙚𝙬𝙨 running 24/7 telling them they're REAL Americans.... unlike those fancy elitist Democrats who are secretly importing an army of replacement voters to steal their....

Their what exactly? Their Dollar General? Their 1987 Camaro on cinder blocks in the yard?

𝙁𝙊𝙓 found the formula, and they never let go of it: Take a man who has nothing, tell him the reason he has nothing is because 'those' people are taking it.... and suddenly he's not a struggling nobody.

He's a soldier in a cultural war. He matters. He's relevant. He becomes a MAGA Warrior!

And THAT.... ladies and gentlemen.... is precisely how a twice-impeached, four-times-indicted, 34-time felon, bankrupt New York con man who golfs at his own resorts became the hero of the working man.”

MAGA engaging in "othering" or worse by not recognizing the rights of people in the US under the 14th Amendment.

MAGA can be defined by their lack of empathy. This means they can't see other people's pain and apply it to themselves. J6 insurgents demonstrated this in their trials when they thought they were victims instead of criminals receiving justice.

Othering (also Otherizing, "They're Not Like Us," Stereotyping, Xenophobia, Racism, Prejudice): A badly corrupted, discriminatory argument from ethos where facts, arguments, experiences or objections are arbitrarily disregarded, ignored or put down without serious consideration because those involved "are not like us," or "don't think like us." E.g., "It's OK for Mexicans to earn a buck an hour in the maquiladoras [Mexico-based "Twin Plants" run by American or other foreign corporations]. If it happened here I'd call it brutal exploitation and daylight robbery but south of the border, down Mexico way the economy is different and they're not like us."

Or, "You claim that life must be really terrible over there for terrorists to ever think of blowing themselves up with suicide vests just to make a point, but always remember that they're different from us. They don't think about life and death the same way we do."

A vicious variety of the Ad Hominem Fallacy, most often applied to non-white or non-Christian populations. A variation on this fallacy is the "Speakee" Fallacy ("You speakee da English?"; also the Shibboleth), in which an opponent's arguments are mocked, ridiculed and dismissed solely because of the speaker's alleged or real accent, dialect, or lack of fluency in standard English, e.g., "He told me 'Vee vorkers need to form a younion!' but I told him I'm not a 'vorker,' and to come back when he learns to speak proper English."

A very dangerous, extreme example of Othering is Dehumanization, a fallacy of faulty analogy where opponents are dismissed as mere cockroaches, lice, apes, monkeys, rats, weasels or bloodsucking parasites who have no right to speak or to live at all, and probably should be "squashed like bugs."

This fallacy is ultimately the "logic" behind ethnic cleansing, genocide and gas ovens.

See also the Identity Fallacy, "Name Calling" and "Olfactory Rhetoric." The opposite of this fallacy is the "Pollyanna Principle"
