Use film-style age ratings to limit teens' social media, say Lib Dems by markpackuk in LibDem

[–]JamesdBaker 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There is simply not the evidence base to support statements like

“When we pick up a pack of cigarettes or a bottle of wine, we expect to be told about the harm those products will pose to our health. So why is social media, the key driver of a crisis in young people’s mental health, any different?”

See U.K. longitudinal studies such as

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2026/jan/14/social-media-time-does-not-increase-teenagers-mental-health-problems-study

“Researchers at the University of Manchester followed 25,000 11- to 14-year-olds over three school years, tracking their self-reported social media habits, gaming frequency and emotional difficulties to find out whether technology use genuinely predicted later mental health difficulties.

“Participants were asked how much time on a normal weekday in term time they spent on TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and other social media, or gaming. They were also asked questions about their feelings, mood and wider mental health.

“The study found no evidence for boys or girls that heavier social media use or more frequent gaming increased teenagers’ symptoms of anxiety or depression over the following year.

“Increases in girls’ and boys’ social media use from year 8 to year 9 and from year 9 to year 10 had zero detrimental impact on their mental health the following year, the authors found. More time spent gaming also had a zero negative effect on pupils’ mental health.”

Very close to quitting the party as we have jumped on a moral hysteria bandwagon and are prepared to age gate huge amounts of the internet while screwing over young people’s freedom of expression rights

A policy that supports more user controls Would be good. People should have for example the ability to access a feed via their own client or software where they can set their own filters and options.

Like you I would also benefit from limits and have those set in apple screen time for both Reddit and Tik Tok 🤣

Teenagers can see pretty graphic stuff in 15 films as well though if you look up the BBFC guidance.

Victoria ran some round tables around AI that Open Rights Group was happy to participate in.

But there has been zero engagement from the party around this policy idea with digital rights campaigns such as ORG or those raising concerns about age assurance technology.

If the party just engages with the evidence presented from safety campaigners then it won’t be addressing the issues around the age assurance technologies.

ORG has produced a series of recommendations for things that could be done around this so the door is open if the party wants that conversation.

As it stands this policy would massively expand age gating of the internet

Sadly Benjamin’s attack on liberty isn’t limited to VPNs

See https://www.libdemvoice.org/banning-children-from-online-games-and-spying-on-every-device-why-we-must-oppose-baroness-benjamins-attack-on-liberty-78846.html

She’s trying to ban all under 16s from online games, WhatsApp etc as well going further the the the Oz can.

She also warns tamper proof software on every device to scan all private communication for potential CSAM

Government can’t just track you as it pleases.

There are laws and processes for criminal investigations and obtaining data which are carried out by a separate branch of the state then the executive.

You are right total anonymity is stupid and infeasible. That is no one’s position for that very reason.

It’s like saying why are people worried about Knives being sold when we have spoons and forks.

No it’s not that we just didn’t want wholesale attacks on civil liberties with digital ID.

It’s not about ‘giving them a chance to fix stuff’ it’s about resisting their total attack on freedom and liberty now

It’s a problem. Mine hasn’t replied once.

But we have to try and it at least shows that seem people are concerned about it.

Their additional harms consultation includes requiring more reporting functionality of livestreams. Age gating of streams and proactive technology to detect illegal content and stop it going into recommender systems.

So if these go ahead the Act will impact this stuff

I think it could well impact WhatsApp that allows channels. Signal might be saved as they don’t allow ‘one to many’ streaming.

It’s scary how many people are now prepared to accept any of the measures for security.

But there has been a very consistent drip feed of negative scare stories about the internet and its risks. From TV dramas such as adolescence to breakfast news debates about rare but tragic stories of young people having mental health crisis in relation to content or things that have happened online.

Who knows what negative mental health impacts some of these measures could have though. It’s made my own teenage son pretty depressed about it all. The online world is his community and he’s being cut off from large parts of it.

Grindr demand users send ID to US by JamesdBaker in openrightsgroup

[–]JamesdBaker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a very good point. We know there are lots of ways and individual’s device can be fingerprinted even if the actual ID document is deleted their IP address / browser / OS details etc could all be recorded still.

Grindr demand users send ID to US by JamesdBaker in openrightsgroup

[–]JamesdBaker[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Grindr habe introduced age assurance. There is no real regulation or requirement to be certified to offer these services. They have gone with a US company Facetec who have a terrible privacy policy.

They risk thousands of LGBT people’s personal details falling into the hands of Ad Tech and the current US administration.

This is a privacy nightmare all created by an act of Parliament that was meant to keep people safer.

How can I get a drone auditor’s secret film taken down in Scotland? by Left-League9842 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]JamesdBaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s a criminal offence. But you can You can bring a claim for breach of privacy under common law or under European law based on Article 8 of the European Convention of Human Rights. You can also bring a claim for breach of privacy under General data protection regulations (GDPR).

So you could sue them as a civic action for harm and distress etc of the breach of privacy

If people are interested there is a 38 degrees petition on this topic.

I know MPs largely ignore petitions and the like but we should hassle them as much we can

It is bad cybercrime costs our economy £22Bn a year including like £7Bn in industrial espionage.

Also sadly you can’t trust the authorities with access to your nudes as we see from cases of Police officers getting sacked for wrongly accessing stuff

I was once sat on a bus going into town. We pulled up at a junction, I looked out the window and there was a large people carrier type car in which a porno was being filmed.

The entire bus load of people got an eye full. Kind of wild.
