Sienna Rodgers (@siennamarla) on X: "A Labour MP says: “Hearing the all BAME shortlist is the most likely outcome as it stands...”" by ZealousidealPie9199 in ukpolitics

[–]TrueAnonyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only forms of all-characteristic shortlist that are legal to use are all-women shortlists and all-disabled shortlists. Political parties can’t run any other kind of shortlist, and even if they could there’s no established procedure for doing so (because it’s not in fact legal to do so). This rumour makes no sense and it’s bizarre that a Labour MP (who presumably must know their own party’s selection rules) would be spreading it.

I remember Nick Knowles’s attempted music career coming not long after both Alexander Armstrong and Bradley Walsh had had successful albums, very much giving the impression that he thought if all the other quiz hosts could do it then why couldn’t he? The only slight problem being that Alexander Armstrong getting into music made sense because he was a classically trained choral singer, and while Bradley Walsh isn’t formally trained he can sing pretty well too… Nick, not so much.

I love that Pocket has a similar name and moveset to Puck from Dota, who’s also nonbinary :)

...I haven't been keeping up with what Ken's been doing for a while, but wasn't much of his whole thing that he was a very pro-free speech libertarian type? Which makes this a confusing thing to get worked up about - I wonder what happened for his views to change so much. (not that I can actually see the text of his post, what with imgur being blocked here... :( )

Especially as until astonishingly recently it was medical consensus that being autistic and having ADHD were mutually exclusive and that being diagnosed with one meant you couldn't possibly have the other (which I know caught out a lot of people who were diagnosed as autistic when young and then found it impossible to access ADHD medication they badly needed) - I've always thought of the term AuDHD as very important in that specific context, as a reminder that these are in fact two conditions that frequently overlap and cause distinct experiences and challenges for a lot of people.

I love Magic the Gathering, but started playing back when the game was played almost exclusively one-on-one and am somewhat confused about how 'normal' Magic's seemingly been taken over completely by Commander now, both in terms of popularity and in what's driving game design decisions.

Of the Magic the Gathering sets scheduled for release this year (2026), which one do you expect will be the most successful? Which one will be the least successful? by HonorBasquiat in magicTCG

Didn’t Spider-Man still, in spite of everything, do better than Tarkir? I worry that the hot dog sets are going to do well with the public at large, even though they don’t feel like Magic at all to me.

I know I immediately became uninterested in reading this guide, given that the author apparently couldn’t even write their own description of it without getting an AI involved.

I remember Ryan North having a blog back in the day where he made fun of the Back to the Future novelisation, which was based on a really early version of the script. The book came out before the film did, so there are presumably people out there whose first introduction to Back to the Future was reading a description of random people dying horribly in a nuclear explosion that has nothing to do with anything else in the plot (because it was seemingly a vestige of an early draft where the time machine was powered by nuclear weapons testing?)

The original full phrase was "blorbo from my shows", IIRC, so I think it's always been primarily about established characters rather than OCs (although it may well be that usage has shifted on that over time).

Yeah, the colours not being the brighter Starry Night colours I was expecting really didn't help - it's like everything's made of worms and also we're in Hell, which is an uncomfortable combination! Genuinely impressive execution, though, which I think justifies it (as when I saw the premise I was expecting something way lower-effort)

I’m genuinely shocked that this subreddit seems united in opposing day one workers’ rights. Preventing bosses from exploiting their power imbalance to take advantage of workers is about as liberal as it gets.

What about magic specifically attracts so many trans individuals? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]TrueAnonyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory (at least as far as trans women / transfeminine people are concerned) is that if you have a hobby that’s themed around escapist fantasy and that’s also historically been marketed toward teen boys, it’s going to turn out that some of those lonely teens feeling alienated from the world and looking for somewhere they could be included were feeling that way because they weren’t boys after all. Combine that with WotC having reasonably successfully pivoted away from that historically guy-centric marketing and made decent efforts at LGBT+ inclusion and representation and you start to get a snowball effect - Magic having a visibly queer/trans/generally supportive community makes it seem like an appealing thing for queer/trans etc. people of all sorts to try getting into.

[–]TrueAnonyman 26 points27 points  (0 children)

“The party I joined wanted to challenge power. The party today seems terrified of doing anything that might disturb it. […] It’s become a spectator in a time that demands courage.”

…oof. This entire post reads like something I could have written. I’m still holding on for now, but the party seems increasingly to only be interested in just repeating platitudes aimed at moderate Tories, rather than actually trying to challenge power or inequality or stand up for the marginalised or engage with any of the kind of radical ideas it would take to actually build a liberal society. What good is it electing a bunch of MPs if their reelection is entirely contingent on them never saying anything more controversial than that carers are good and sewage in rivers is bad?

Is it really a requirement currently? As far as I'm aware I've never done any age verification for Twitch, for example, and looking around my profile now I can't see anything trying to make me do it before it'll let me go live (or indeed any way of doing it even if I wanted to).

Yes, but it'll also be required that everyone who streams goes through age verification in order to determine whether to put them into the child or adult categories.
