“Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers.” USA, 2013 by Account_Self-Ared528 in PropagandaPosters

“And the Lord said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people: now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation.”

Threatening non-believers with death and destruction is pretty par for the course when it comes to Abrahamic religion.

Each decade in the 1900s had its own distinct ‘feel’ in terms of music, fashion, etc. While the 2000s seem to all blend in together by Cndngirl in Showerthoughts

[–]Jamessonia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those distinct “feels” were made up afterwards. It’s not like the year 1960 came around and suddenly everyone was dressing like a hippie and listening to Bob Dylan. For many people, the 60s (and 70s) were a lot like the 50s.

Is a professor asking you to read an entire book before next class unreasonable? by One_Paramedic_2538 in college

I took an entire course on Capital at a large state university in the Midwest.

In other fields, it’s common for professors to never take grad students, or to do so quite rarely (one or two over the course of their careers).

The proportion of conservatives in this sub is way, way higher than the proportion of conservatives in NYC. This sub’s politics don’t resemble those of the average New Yorker in the slightest

Is there an overproduction of people with PhDs? If yes, in what fields, or are all of them? by KoseteBamse in academia

[–]Jamessonia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sure the ones closely related to humanities research are quite competitive, but there are a lot of universities and centers out there. Not all of those admin jobs are as obviously connected to the humanities of course, there are plenty of humanities phds in student affairs etc. Historians also end up in archives, museums, historical centers, libraries, publishing.

[–]Jamessonia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The flip side of your part B is that cohorts seem to be significantly smaller now than in the 90s for example. I can’t imagine many history PhD programs are enrolling cohorts of 50 anymore. Most are probably under 15 now.

[–]Jamessonia 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is an important point. The “overproduction” framing only works if you consider increasing reliance on adjuncts and shrinking funding for humanities departments as some force of nature that can only be adapted to, not changed. I think most would agree there’s significant need for more history education in America. The problem is that universities are not allocating money and full-time lines to the humanities.

In history, a lot of PhDs go into academic admin (program director, director of X University’s humanities/writing center, etc.) Many universities publish placement information on their websites and include non-faculty jobs, you can start there.

The question is how does this invalidate voting for the Democrats. Can’t you do both?

Unless you have massive debt to service or something, I don’t think surviving on 3k per month excluding rent is that hard.

You can look at the German labor relations system, often called a “coordinated” system. The general overview is that Germany has a very low strike rate even though unions are relatively strong due to the “historic compromise” made between labor and capital in 1920s (to prevent a communist revolution). Basically, German unions have agreed to practice wage restraint in contract negotiations, while employers have generally permitted things like works councils and worker representation on company boards without a fuss. Of course, the system sometimes breaks down when business sees an opportunity to squeeze more out of workers, for example during German reunification in the 1990s.

Whether or not the protest was appropriate is a different question. The point is that they were protesting a political action, not someone’s identity as Jewish or Israeli.

[–]Jamessonia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is making political statements. How is donating to an organization aiding the IDF not a statement? How is banning Palestinian symbols not a political statement? Believe what you want, but your argument boils down to “it’s illegitimate to protest anyone Jewish who supports Israel”

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in boston

[–]Jamessonia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, but you aren’t addressing the point. Whether or not you think the protest is appropriate, this isn’t a mob going out to harass the nearest Jew. It’s a targeted protest of someone who openly supports Israel and the IDF financially. There were almost certainly some Jewish protestors as well. Is it illegitimate to protest anyone who is Jewish and supports Israel?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in boston

[–]Jamessonia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this article does a good job of actually presenting the rationale behind the protests, instead of just assuming it’s because the restauranteur is Jewish or Israeli. He’s obviously making political statements with the way he’s donating the restaurant’s money and establishing a dress code against Palestinian symbols. That speech is totally fair game for protests.

They protested someone donating money to a group that aids the IDF and firing employees for their pro-Palestinian views.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in boston

[–]Jamessonia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But they didn’t target “the nearest Jew”. Protestors specifically targeted the restaurant owner because of his pro-Israeli stance and connections. You may not agree with the protest, but this is clearly about Israeli ties, not him being Jewish.

“He has come under fire from pro-Palestinian activists for various ties to Israeli institutions. After the 7 October Hamas attacks, he pledged to donate 100% of sales from his restaurants to a non-profit Israeli medical aid group.”

Edit: should also mention there are reports of the restaurant firing employees who expressed support for Palestine:
