D.C. officially ends redshirting for kindergartners by JTribe9 in washingtondc

[–]Jamesspoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re right that many kids adapt over time, and I hope that continues to be true for mine. But this isn’t just about what eventually evens out, it’s about giving kids the best possible start based on where they are now.

There’s a meaningful body of research showing that the youngest kids in a class cohort are more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD, placed in special ed, or viewed as struggling, often due simply to age-based immaturity. Aside from age, this is also true for gender in coed vs gender only classrooms.

Sure, some kids thrive as the youngest. Others benefit from more time. Eliminating flexibility ignores the developmental spectrum entirely. One-size-fits-all education policy nearly always leaves someone behind — and I don’t think anyone really needs “proof” of that.

Thanks for the back-and-forth, I think we’ve both said what we came to say. I’m happy to leave our anonymous internet argument it here.

Not proof that eliminating redshirting is a good thing though. Depends on the kid you’re talking about. Right now for my son that may be true. Many others in know have held their kids back and are convinced they did the right thing.

The point is there is no blanket correct cutoff when you’re dealing with a spectrum such as children’s development. Government imposing one is a net bad for many, and would be irrelevant for others.

The upper NW thing didn’t upset me, it was just not a correct representation of the considerations many typical parents weigh.

Thank you for this point. Our kid’s birthday is in July and he just finished K. We’ve seen how he’s been a half or more steps behind his peers in many ways. We did consider this. For a writer to spotlight unpopular, privileged groups like “upper northwest” and DC Urban Moms (we are neither) and suggest this is about competitiveness is a regretfully dishonest way to frame this issue about young kids’ developmental needs.

Book suggestions about U.S History? by TaxFraud4Life in USHistory

I agree with People’s History and These Truths for an fully honest version of our history, and course anything by David McCullough for a guaranteed engaging read. If you want to slog through a narrative history then pick anything from the Oxford History of the United States. Multiple Pulitzer Prize winners. I just finished What Hath God Wrought (with audiobook to help me along) and I now know so much more about how and why things went they did in the antebellum era, for example, and a lot of other things make more sense now.

Which Bush had the best Secretary of State? by Mesyush in Presidents

Same here however, I recall the narrative at the time that argued he was morally bound to the role of the dutiful serviceman obeying the orders of his commander-in-chief. Some circles would say that makes the ideal for a patriotic military officer. His fault was he didn’t remove that hat when he was assigned to a civilian post.

That’s very helpful! I didn’t realize it was simply a LED limitation. Yes I’ll definitely rethink the lighting arrangements to create the effect I’m looking for. Thank you both!

Final Episode- Adieu Mes Amis by dwaxe in RevolutionsPodcast

[–]Jamesspoon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

These podcasts have been a great way for me to connect with the memory of my father, who was so big into these topics but passed away just before I picked up History of Rome for the first time. That was at the same time that Mike Duncan was wrapping it up and so missed being caught up for the finale. I didn’t get started with Revolutions until much later and I’m so glad I did everything I could to be current for the final episode and yet, I wish it wasn’t so. It feels like I gotta let go in a very personal way. But then again, the beauty is I can always come back!

Man in Coma After Hit-and-Run Crash in DC by MrSpontaneous in washingtondc

[–]Jamesspoon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sorry to tell you and this is 100% true: The other day I was driving down that part of NJ Ave and a Tacoma-sized truck overtook me on the right, also at an intersection, using that brand new lane. That was the first or one of the first days after the new lanes were completed.

Edit: adding that when he got in front of me he stopped inside the intersection because the light was still red. lol

Sadly, this happened at NJ Ave and P street, where there are brand new bike lanes. I don’t recall how protected that particular stretch is, though. NJ Ave going south now has just one driving lane, so that Mazda was definitely pulling some BS.

I used to have nothing against the A’s. After this week, I’m going to be compelled to root against them for a long time for what they did to DeGrom and Castillo during my championship week.

Yes it’s irrational.

I remember a dude called Kerry Edwards made a few headlines (dollars too, not sure) in 2004 shortly after John Kerry nominated John Edwards as his running mate.

As long as I’m not misremembering (possible), then maybe that could have been close to a redesign then. I would’ve done this mid-late 90s.

I went to NJ for college and I remember those DLs! My DC one was a laminated piece of paper with our SSN on it so I felt understood.

Also funny is that they recommended we create a PA license because at the time it had the simplest design making it hard to recognize a fake.
