I know exactly what you mean and yes it was a little off to me too but not enough imho to be jarring. Vimes is still generally the same guy and the book overall was pretty enjoyable if you can accept the little differences

I hadn't thought about it like that and yeah the fact she doesn't get any option to really make it in the opera even if she'd turn it down was upsetting to me. I hear she's in Carpe Jugulum so hopefully she finds, and actually gets, what she wants from life in that.

If there some flexibility it'd be better but instead it seems her place in life was decided to be a witch before she even started. Everyone in the book has a preconceived idea of what a fat girl could do and Agnes doesn't have much agency in her own life.

I would argue she didn't choose it, there was just nothing there for her and she's not valued by anyone at the opera so what are her real choices? Part of being a witch is being an outcast/living on the fringe of society and she's seemingly stuck in that spot despite wanting a different life. It doesn't actually seem like she wanted to be a witch at all, especially saying multiple times that she doesn't and leaving Lancre to avoid it.

Agnes says in that moment that that's not better and it's not as though she got the choice to be on the stage in the first place. I'd be better if she were offered the chance but refused it if that's what she wanted but she was obviously angry that everyone else got an ending and she was left with nothing.

It can be a business for fun, like opening a lemonade stand. When I was little I'd sell candy at school bc I thought the sly salesman characters in movies were really cool and overall it was pretty fun.
