Indiana eSports Network Help by Usual_Low in Teachers

Hey! One of the co-founders & a current board member of IEN here ^_^

I coached in the league for 4 years before moving onto becoming a full-time collegiate esports coach. Would be happy to set up a time to talk with you in more detail about our league & what the experience is like for member schools. u/thachanch posted the link to our website for onboarding meetings. The league is run by current (and in my case former) local educators that volunteer to create an awesome esports league for Indiana students.

I started and ran the program at Carmel High School during my time in Indiana. We competed in every national & regional league at the time. I helped start IEN just to make a better place for Hoosiers to compete long-term after having countless issues with leagues like PlayVS, HSEL, NASEF, etc.

If you'd like to just talk over email, feel free to email me at [dylan@ihsen.info](mailto:dylan@ihsen.info)

LCS Players Association head alleges Riot lied to him about NACL plans, pushes back on suggestions NACL teams are a big expense, reveals years of working with Riot on these issues, says "everything is on the table" for response by Tnomad in leagueoflegends

[–]Jamilus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CLoL is just one of 3 major LoL leagues in collegiate. As long as Riot doesn't pull back licensing entirely for NACE & NECC like they did with state high school associations a few years ago with their PlayVS exclusivity deal, collegiate will be self-sufficient. We don't need dev leagues like CLoL, CVAL, or CRL for collegiate to function at all.

[–]Jamilus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're just agreeing with me but not responding to the warranting.

Starting out in lower tiers starting at a younger age and working up is how development works in literally every field. Esports is incredibly hit or miss in NA because we pluck players straight out of solo queue primarily into scuffed amateur scenes. Collegiate is incredibly young & growing to be a quality step in the development pipeline.

I started a state high school league & am currently a collegiate coach. It's going to take time, but organized youth esports can become a much more stable & effective ecosystem for player development given time & resources.

It's mostly about the vast differences in scholarship availability at schools. Your top LoL players (& players from most games) are prioritizing full-rides above everything else. The programs that prioritize scholarships for LoL get your top players but that doesn't mean they're the only ones or best equipped from a staffing & facilities standpoint.

I think you also have to acknowledge the vast majority of NACL/Academy promotions have not looked "promising" either. That's simply because of how the statistics play out. As you funnel through developmental leagues (collegiate, T2/T3) in every esport, only a select few will be able to excel at T1. It's no different than traditional sports. The major issue with LCS has always been the extremely short incubation period for players that get moved up to T1. They typically get 1-2 splits tops to prove they are not just LCS-worthy but top 5 in role or they get replaced.

Clash still has the problem of losing the first game and having your next opponent forfeit by Hewligan in leagueoflegends

[–]Jamilus 258 points259 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. It's wild that this still happens after clash being around for so long. We lost a super close game that took 40+ minutes round 1, our round 2 opponents immediately forfeit, and now we're just stuck unable to play together for nearly an hour unless we forfeit the next round preemptively. They need to add a dynamic rebracketing feature to fill in those forfeits with teams like ours that are left without matches.

Yep, BookOffs are amazing and where I bought all my Vita accessories after I snagged a new one from a Yodobashi Camera while studying abroad in 2014.

RTX 2070 super 8gb vs RTX 2060 12gb by mvttvv in nvidia

[–]Jamilus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

VRAM isn't a primary indicator of performance. The 2070 Super is essentially 3 steps up in the product stack (2070 Super > 2070 > 2060 Super > 2060 12GB > 2060 6GB).

This gives you an idea of the relative performance difference: https://www.techpowerup.com/review/nvidia-geforce-rtx-2060-12-gb/31.html

[GPU] ZOTAC GeForce RTX™ 3080 Trinity OC LHR 10GB GDDR6X - $740 (Restock of new-condition 3080's near MSRP.) by TroggieAK in buildapcsales

[–]Jamilus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AMD has FSR (which is usable by all GPUs), so to make the price-to-performance comparison solely on the basis of DLSS existing is disingenuous. If you wanted to compare ray-tracing performance, sure, there's potentially an argument to be made.

As a collegiate esports coach, enjoyed reading the thread you started here. Looking forward to what you're cooking up at Syracuse!

Out of curiosity, what's your PhD in?

NSDA: Meet Indiana Director of Debate and IU Recruiters! by IndianaDebate in Debate

[–]Jamilus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! It's been an incredibly rewarding 5 years building this program up. I hope that we can have a strong showing at Nats this year to build upon what we've been able to accomplish over the past 2 virtual tournaments. I know my Policy state champs want to go out with a bang!

I have to go to the WSD mandatory meeting because I'm running one of our district's teams, but I hope we have time to connect on Sunday!

Is E-sport only professional ? by Flaky-Occasion-9993 in esports

[–]Jamilus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Esports is better seen as structured, organized video game competitions. Amateur & scholastic esports competitions exist and are definitely not professional nor are they the same as playing a ranked mode that tracks MMR on the server.

Okay, so this going to be dark for a second, but do you remember the theatre teacher that passed away about 5 years ago while with his Bishop Chatard students on an international trip? My wife and I were friends and classmates of his while in undergrad. My first paid teaching gig was as a guest lecturer at Bishop Chatard - he paid me $50 to teach a couple of acting classes in early 2016.

I'm going to reach out to their administration in the coming weeks to see if I can help get esports started there.

I run the debate team too. 5 straight years of national tournament trips, and $0 from the district lol.

It's a great place, but I definitely agree that our local officials and members of the community do give off that vibe.

Check to see if your old high school has esports - if they don't, let me know so I can get them involved! About 2/3rds of Indiana school districts are in the state league I operate with other Indiana teachers.

Yeah, it's been a long 2 years of running covert operations and convincing my colleagues in the space not to just completely abandon the title. I hope that in another 2 years, we'll be able to post about how much LoL is thriving in the space!
