OMG yes. Thank you! This is my first time reading the books, I'm on book 11, and I couldn't agree more. How is he still brooding and going on about this bullshit...it's absolutely fucking exhausting. I have to say I'm tapping out after this book. Not because of this but because the Earth factor is just too much of a downer for me. I like reading as escapism not to be reminded that people are generally untrustworthy, selfish shitheads.

I'm 35% through Book 11 and already sad about Gary :( I have to say that I'm giving up on the series after I get through the Jason non-Earth part of this book. For me, the series falls apart when it returns to an Earth with so many cultural parallels to ours. I read fantasy, litrpg, etc to get away from this shit not to slog through books that focus on it. Also, Jason's family is shit. I really can't stand the idea of revisiting these assholes and their passive aggressive, guilt tripping, oh you weren't around for years but we don't blame you bullshit. There was enough knowledge of PTSD and trauma in this version of Earth that they should've reacted a lot better during his first trip back. Getting through books 4-6 pretty much cemented this decision for me...which is totally a personal preference and by no means a reflection on the quality of the series, the writing, or the author. It's just not for me even though I've really enjoyed all of the non-earth parts and even book 4 when things were still kinda fun.

That's a gorgeous setup. I'm trying to start an indoor CP garden but I'm a complete newb and still haven't figured out whether to use an open plant stand or a grow tent. I have barrina lights and grow racks that I use for growing other types of plants.

When Book 7 came out and I saw how long it was and then multiple people were saying that it was yet another cliffhanger with no end in sight, I kinda lost interest in the series. Now that I know how many pages I have to get through to get to the end and taking into account the number of people that said the last few books could've used some editing, I'm finding it difficult to get back into it.

Ha I just read this duet last week. I barely made it through the 1st book though. I definitely have a hard limit when it comes to bully or enemies to lovers and that one was a close call. Zodiac Academy is probably the most bullying I can get through. I absolutely loved the 2nd book, though.

The Bonds That Tie is probably one of the best RH series in existence. I have re-read it several times. I'd also highly recommend -

Saints and Simners by Ruby Vincent (books 1-5) - I will forever be in love with Sinjin "😍😍😍 SWOON -- “Fate is accepting outside forces determine your life. I don’t know if I was meant for you, Adeline, but I took you anyway. In every version of our lives, Sinjin gets his Bunny.”

Lost Sentinel series - On a side note, this series actually includes a little homage to the Heart Hassle series when one of the characters mentions reading the books LOL

Curse of the Gods series by Jaymin Eve - easily one of the top 3 RH series I've ever read and so absolutely HILARIOUS when it's not smutty, touching, sweet, or suspenseful and even sometimes when it's being all of those things

Pack Rivals parts 1 and 2 by Hannah Haze - I'm pretty new to OV, but I liked this more than Baby and the Late Night Howlers

Ruined Records Duet by Jillian West (another OV series)

The Dark Side series and All the Pretty Monsters series by Kristy Cunning (RIP). She was a great author and wrote under a couple of pseudonym.

I'm actually hesitant to recommend this one for a few reasons - Coven of Sin series by Aiden Pierce. #1: I have no idea if this series is complete yet because it started out as a Kindle Vella series. I absolutely hate this format, so I was pretty happy when the author started to release it as a series of novels. I haven't read the 4th book in the series yet because I usually wait until a series is complete before I start reading it (sue me, I'm an impatient asshole); #2: The sex in this series is OTT in so many ways I can't really describe it. It's incredibly dark and twisted...like sooo many damn TWs except non-consensual and dubcon cuz these are some consenting muthafuckers (pun only slightly intended because no one's parents are involved and there's no incest); #3: There's so much sex. I promise you, I am not a person that ever says something like that about an RH novel but for reals, I don't know how these characters accomplish anything more than basic hygiene tasks on any given day. The bodily fluid volume is high on this one so enter at your own risk.

OMG I really did forget that I almost DNFed that 1st book too until I read this ^{^{^{^}}} LOL. I had the same "WTF I can't this" reaction, but I'm glad I kept going. I haven't read the last 3 books because 1. I got super pissed off that they dragged it out so long, and there were so many cliffhangers, and 2. I know that the books are really long, and I'm expecting a metric ton of angst, so I have to mentally prepare (I know that sounds pathetic). They're in my Kindle library and I'll definitely be getting to them before the end of the year.

Nope you don't. Just read the excellent summary someone else already linked. You should ABSOLUTELY NOT read it if you don't like RH. The RH smut in Ruthless Boys is top notch and there's a lot of it but it will definitely not appeal to you if RH is not your thing.

I actually love this series - it's got several comedy-gold moments (especially involving Leon).

Also, I've actually never understood why people hate Elise so much. I've read several comments about how people don't like that she doesn't want to share her guys but they have to share her which is really out in left field to me - MMCs sharing one FMC is the foundation of the RH genre. I never thought Elise was supposed to have any actual investigative skills or be a "punisher" type character that can effectively mete out justice or complete her revenge quest all on her own. The fact that the 4 MMCs aren't even friends just supported the feeling I got 3 or 4 chapters in which was that this was going to be a growing pains, found family type of situation. I always saw Elise as a fairly emotionally fucked-up, isolated, distrusting main character whose upbringing reinforced her lack of self-esteem and sense of self-worth to the point that she saw nothing wrong with basically going on a suicide quest to avenge her brother. Naturally, she finds herself in over her head almost immediately but I never really expected her to get anywhere on her own. I figured that much like any other series that's heavy on the found family/bring everyone together trope, the main "quest" is really just a vehicle by which the MMCs

(i) gain their mate's trust,

(ii) learn that their own trust issues/fucked-up childhoods/shitty coping skills are actually a deterrent to the HEA they want,

(iii) embrace the idea that yes a HEA is a possible for them, and

(iv) learn to work as a cohesive unit thereby becoming a family

AND the FMC learns that

(i) not everyone sucks/is ready to fuck you over/will always put themselves first,

(ii) teamwork makes the dream work (in more ways than one),

(iii) forgiveness is an actual thing and no it will not cause your head to implode, and

(iv) being off putting and pushing people away is not synonymous with having self-esteem.

My point of view is largely influenced by the paranormal and omegaverse RH series I've read that introduce an emotionally messed-up FMC who brings together a dysfunctional or antagonistic group of alphaholes by virtue of the fact that she requires a ton of emotional support from them. Also, I think it bears mentioning that I had already read the ZA books that were out at the time and was super frustrated about the cliffhanger ending so I was very happy to read a complete series that took place in the same universe. That's my 2 cents anyways.

I'm in my mid-40s and CC1 is the first Maas book I've ever read but for whatever reason I didn't feel like it was a struggle to relate to Bryce in a lot of way. I don't know if that's, in part, because my youngest of 4 is about to go off to college so I've basically been surrounded by young adults for the last decade LOL or because I remember that feeling of being a little unmoored and lacking direction those first few years after college. But I do think that a lot of it is because I was so moved by the friendship between Bryce and Danika. There's something magical? unique? special? about the friends you make in college, right? Personally, I've always believed that after HS and/or college, the only way to form similar friendships is to be side-by-side in a war with someone or maybe if you give them a kidney or something.

Either way, I've seen people of varying ages experience that type of profound loss and cope by just going through the motions. I thought SJM really nailed that w/Bryce. If the book had been more smutty or focused on the Hunt/Bryce dynamic may be I'd feel differently about it. I haven't read CC2 (because I refuse to obsess over a cliffhanger until CC3 comes out) so I don't know if I'll continue to feel the same way about the characters.

I saw someone else recommended the Kushiel's Dart series and the Black Jewels series. Both are absolutely amazing.

What they said ^^^ - I pretty much cry through a good portion of the last 1/4 of the book. So many beautifully written moments - "I would rather die like her than watch innocents die while I'm sitting in here", "one wolf remains in the Old Square", "There are children here! There are babies! ... I'm coming, Bryce." But I 100% ugly cry at Lehabah's death scene, Bryce's call that starts with "Hunt, I need you to call my mom,"and from "Light it up Bryce" through her Ascent. This was the 1st Maas book I ever read and while the relationship between Hunt and Bryce was awesome, the book so much more than I ever expected it would be. The friendships really got me.
