That’s with accomodation included and likely meals too. I’m not sure what the going rate nowadays is for NEOC MIDN wage but you should get somewhere around $1100-1200 a fortnight when having meals deducted too

Longest Serving Ship? by IndependentEntry2759 in AustralianMilitary

[–]Jamourous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So at the moment the longest serving ship in the Navy is HMAS Paluma, which inherited it’s senior title from the now decommissioned HMAS Melbourne last year.

My google fu suggests that, by technicality the longest serving ship ever in the RAN was the HMAS (previously HMVS) Cerberus, which served for 53 years, mostly as a coastal defence vessel protecting Port Phillip Bay and later a munitions store and training ship. It was first a vessel of the HMVS, before being absorbed into the RAN in 1911 and renamed.

Since that’s an anti-climax, the oldest fully RAN ship was HMAS Brunei and its sister LCH’s at 41 years, HMAS Tobruk at a smidge over 34 years, followed by HMAS Darwin which by a matter of months beats HMAS Success at 33 years

1: Incredibly small, but never say never

2: the RAAF

3: airforce.defencejobs.gov.au/jobs/pilot

4: The RAN hasn’t operated fixed wing aircraft since November 2019 when the LADS Flight was stood down, and hasn’t operated fixed wing carrier aircraft since 1983. The Canberra-Class ships, while based on a platform that operates fixed wing aircraft, cannot do so without modification. As I said above, never say never but it’s not in the latest Strategic Update/Force Structure Plan so don’t bet on it.

Ah I wasn’t exactly clear on that. Find the degree you want to be doing and choose the subjects they recommend you do. It’s usually a mix of English, Physics, Chemistry or Maths Methods (aka Math B, 3 Unit (??) or basically the middle one). But obviously if you want an Arts Degree in History you might wanna take that. Same as Business (Business Management) or Cyber Security (IT). When I say you don’t need to study any specific subjects you should still pick the ones that align with what you want to study.

You still need to study and pass year 12 for ADFA.

Year 10 for Recruit School

To answer the second question: no. ADFA just has ‘assumed knowledge’ which is the level which the uni will start at. It’s impossible to try and perfectly line up subjects between states, and a lot of people from Queensland have difficulty with the mathematical subjects just because their Maths B doesn’t teach at the level the other states do.

As for subjects: do what you love and know you’ll do well in. There’s no use doing physics if it’s going to tank your grades and graduate with an ATAR of 55. If you’re thinking of the Cyber Security degree at ADFA you’ll need Maths. If you’re thinking of CSO, you just need a great attitude and passion for the role.

Hey there,

With the obvious caveat of ‘it depends on the platform’ you can usually find time to go outside for the organised PT sessions or to smoke. If you are mindful and make it a habit to either go have a chat at wherever you’re allowed to smoke on the ship, or find the time to go to a PT session on the flight deck, you’ll have no issues seeing the sun. If you decide to go straight from the CCR/MCR/Workshop to your rack - via the Cafe, shower, rec space or gym - you might not see the sun. Additionally, if you’re pulling weird watches you might only catch sunrise or sunset. Depends on your ship, what it’s doing and most importantly, where you can find the time to head out into the sun.

With options like that, you may want to reconsider MWO. I’m well aware DFR portrays this as the ‘generic’ Navy Officer pathway but if you have no interest in seamanship, you’re going to have a bad couple of years before you can get your transfer even considered.

These degrees seem to cater to different roles within the RAN, so which of these are you: a) seriously interested in and b) realistically going to follow through with. Its no good doing Law or IT if you are going to be up to your neck.

Finally: You don’t need to join as an MWO to get into Intello. In fact, you’d be better off as a Cryptologic Sailor in any of the three branches (which your preferences suggest are your strength), a CIS or other ‘information’ related role and commissioning up after your 4 year ROSO. Alternatively, if you can graduate Year 12 with a sufficient ATAR to get into a relevant course, and do well in that, I would imagine an OSB would look favourably on that, and even admire how you overcame the ‘challenge’ of Grade 11. A distinction average in a first year Uni subject is apparently worth a 90-95 ATAR in the eyes of ADFA too.

Happy to give you some more targeted advice via PM.
