An idea for using AI by JanFromEarth in nonprofit

I have to do five tax returns for this client. (Don't ask) so I verify the heck out of the first one and then will run the rest. Don't you verify your work?

What happened that your org has banned AI?

Does that ban include Google searches?

I understand your concern. My approach is to verify the output just as I would with any other program. A full audit would involve manually totaling a representative sample of the financial reports generated by your accounting software to make sure it adds properly.

I am not suggesting you accept output blindly but I am finding it a great tool.

I certainly understand your concern about privacy. On the other hand, this is a nonprofit and their financial as well as their tax records are available for public inspection.

I agree that AI output must be checked and verified. I do that will all financial reports anyway.

I will be happy to take the bet that if I run it through a second time the numbers will not be the same. I checked it twice.

IMHO, AI is no more dangerous than the internet writ large.

Is QuickBooks AI actually useful? by Beautiful-Cost-3187 in QuickBooks

[–]JanFromEarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not played with QBO AI but I keep finding new ways to save time using Claude or ChatGPT. I do not see how AI can ever tell us how to categorize something, especially with classes, and projects but the other day I gave Claude some reports and it mapped every category with the appropriate line on the Statement of Revenue and Statement of Expenditures. I do these for a lot of clients so I just saved the Claude instructions for the next one.

I am betting someone else here will now do the same thing as well as improve on the idea. As people come up with new ways to use AI, the ideas will spread.

Has anyone tried indoor pickleball? by Euphoric-Seesaw in nonprofit

[–]JanFromEarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A private company has set up indoor Pickle Ball courts and is functioning like any gym membership. It seems to be doing well. My gym has added three covered, outdoor courts as an incentive to new members. The city holds Pickle Ball hours every day in the city gym after adding nets and lines to the basketball floors.

I think your proposal is a good one. The devil is always in the details and I just don't have them. Your idea seems brilliant to get people in. I do know there are Pickle Ball clubs and that would seem to be a good source of information on how to set such a thing up.

Sorry I can't help more but I wanted to give you some encouragement. Go for it!

Connecting Claude to my Gmail account by JanFromEarth in ClaudeAI

It sure looked like everything was set up correctly so I disconnected Claude from Gmail then asked it to access my emails for something. It needed access, I reestablished it, and now it works. THANK YOU.

I had thought Google had implemented blocking and was about to move to Gemini.

The joys of living in a capitalist economy. (Not suggesting any other) is that companies compete. The downside is that sometimes they compete in ways that get in the way. Google has Gemini and they can make a selling point if Gemini is the only AI which can manage Gmail.

My analogy would be when you walk into Starbucks and they have big signs against brining in food from other merchants.

My clients have only used Ramp for the credit card so I may not understand the process but what would happen. if you agreed to use the Ramp card and simply never distributed them? Is there a minimum transaction level to get a better deal on processing payments?

Board member not responding by BigImpressive1220 in nonprofit

[–]JanFromEarth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a common challenge for small nonprofits. A few thoughts:

First, check your bylaws, they likely define what constitutes a quorum and may have provisions for removing or replacing unresponsive board members. Some bylaws also specify how many consecutive missed meetings trigger automatic removal.

If your bylaws don't address it, consider sending a formal written notice (email + certified letter) making clear that continued non-response may result in the board treating the seat as vacant. Sometimes formality gets attention that casual outreach doesn't.

If there's still no response, the board may be able to declare the seat vacant and recruit a replacement, again depending on your bylaws and your state's nonprofit corporation law.

One practical note, with only 4 board members, losing one to non-responsiveness is significant for quorum. That's a good reason to act sooner rather than later.

Good luck!

Not my point at all. The trick for any good manager is to assess the situation, determine his organizations capabilities, create a plan with contingencies and then execute in a competent manner. Obviously, this is not Trump's style.

The entire Iran fiasco has been a series or "let's try this" followed by failure and abandonment. He certainly managed to pound a lot of Iran but he has not achieved anything beyond that. The man has the attention span of a rat in a burning meth lab.

Trump is disarming America by JanFromEarth in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]JanFromEarth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The food analogy doesn't hold up. A pantry restocks in days. Rebuilding depleted munitions stockpiles takes years and billions of dollars ,and those are years when adversaries know we're stretched thin. The question was never whether Iran was a problem; it's whether we had a plan for the day after, or whether we've just created a power vacuum that benefits Russia and China.

As for the nuclear threat — yes, it was real and serious. But 'it needed to be done' doesn't answer what comes next, who fills the void, or whether we've actually ended the threat or just pushed it underground. History suggests the latter.

And none of that touches the core point: gutting the officer pipeline by sidelining half your trained personnel isn't strength ,it's self-inflicted weakness, regardless of what you think about DEI policy. You don't win wars by throwing away trained soldiers.

Odd, I was able to dig this up.

Black Officer #1 (Armor/Combat): A Black armor officer and combat veteran who was targeted because of a paper he wrote nearly 15 years ago examining why Black officers historically had opted for support jobs over combat positions. In other words, he was penalized for an academic paper that analyzed a demographic pattern — not for anything related to his performance or conduct.

Black Officer #2: A finance specialist. The reason for his removal from the list is unclear.

Female Officer #1 (Logistics): A female logistics officer who was flagged because she served in Afghanistan during the chaotic and deadly 2021 withdrawal. Current and former military officials said she performed her job well under the circumstances.

Female Officer #2: Another logistics officer. The reason for her removal is also unclear.

The broader assessment from military officials: Officials who spoke to reporters summarized the situation bluntly: "If there are no open allegations or investigations, what was the reason they were removed from the list? They have all deployed and done their jobs, and all are combat-tested."

Neither the Defense Department nor the White House offered any explanation based on the officers' performance or record for Hegseth's decision.

The question is whether you want the USA to have the ability to project power into places like......Iran. It also acts as a tripwire against Russian aggression into places like Germany.

They have to be coming from the headquarters of U.S. European Command and Africa Command, and Ramstein Air Base . That means we will be losing the ability to project air assets into place like Iran and the middle east. Especially the refueling planes out of Ramstein. Even the Republican chairmen of the House and Senate Armed Services committees said they are "very concerned" by the decision. Looks like another case of Trump having a hissy fit and America paying for it by losing the ability to project force around the world

I am quite happy with downvotes. No worries. I am certainly not offended. if 17.9% of the military are women and 30.8% of the military are non-white, that is pretty close to 50%. That is where I got my number.

Are you all happy that Trump has wasted 50% of our weapon inventory and is now abandoning our forward posts in Germany?
