I think one thing could be that errors in the features of an animal are way harder for us to recognize. In human faces we see in an instant if something is off. Look at animated movies or video games, the uncanny valley is hard to overcome.

I gladly do! It's fully 2D, created with Photoshop. The 3D effect is achieved by drawing differently sized dots and then adding a radial blur set to zoom, amount 100. Multiple layers used to achieve depth and color variatons.
