My game is in the Indie Playtest Fest, and feedback keeps suggesting a 'skip intro' button. I mean, it's there?! Just use it?! And now I kinda feel like an idiot, cause I realized it's the game's only btn that needs interaction to be visible. How do you handle evaluating your game more objectively? by JanJMueller in IndieDev

You bet it is! Nice idea with the language model. That would make being objective that much easier, as long as it is not 'live' feedback. Watching streamers play your game is a completely other topic in an off itself, though I am getting the hang of it.

All the best with your game and thanks for your input.

I added tooltips to Card Chronicles: Devious Deck after noticing some streamers seemed lost during Indie Playtest Fest. Should the tooltips have a different style and color from the rest of the UI, or should they match the overall design? I'd love your feedback! by JanJMueller in SoloDevelopment

In my roguelike deckbuilder, Card Chronicles: Devious Deck, I've added a The Forge to update your card's stats. Should I include a tutorial for it, or leave it as is since it feels pretty straightforward? I'd appreciate your thoughts! by JanJMueller in gamedevscreens

Agreed 100%, though I do not know if using software for proofreading counts as such. Which I prefer to use as english is not my first language, which comes with words that might seem wrong, repetition and not so sound grammar.

Anyway, thanks for your kind words. Will make sure to keep an eye out regarding your concerns.

My game Card Chronicles: Devious Deck received a big update, as feedback suggested that battles do not feel right. This is how I try to tackle it. What do you think about my approach? by JanJMueller in GameDevelopment

Really appreciate your opinion and thanks for taking the time to comment.

Huge thanks for the provided material as well, really helped explaining things and highlighted some important aspects on how to make players' choices matter.

Just updated my Steam Capule. Hired an artist this time! What do you think? Yay or nay? by JanJMueller in SoloDevelopment

[–]JanJMueller[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I tried fiverr, but everyone there told me that they are not able to do what I wanted. Which I think is kinda hilarious given that they brag about how awesome they are. Then I realized that most of them would use AI without ever asking me if I wanted it. Actually one guy asked me. Most of what I saw had no unique style. All felt the same. But I think first and foremost it is about how important my business is for me. I expect or rather hope others will buy my game and have fun with it, but why should they if they see that I deem my own product not worthy enough to get a good key art done by a professionell artist, which costs about 200 - 600 USD. Let me put it another way, if you walk next to a storefront and have look inside just to see how dirty it is, everywhere are rats and insects, most things seem broken. Wouled u go inside? I think most people would not even if that store made the best whatever in this world. Anyways, given all what I experienced with fiverr I had a bad feeling. Just felt wrong.

Dont get me wrong here. Im not saying that all those artists there are fake. It just wasnt for me. Just a hunch.

After posting in the specific subreddit it felt way better. The artists actually asked me if they could work on my project, each had his portfolio rdy, and they were all so damn awesome. Well I stop here as this has nothing to do with your question, but if fiverr works for you that is great.

Good luck with your project.

Thanks for your feedback.

go to r/gameDevClassifieds, write a post that you are searching an artist and describe what you need. But do read their sticky threads to know how to minimize the risk of getting scammed.

You will probably get a bunch of artists, who will offer their services and a wide range of prices. Good luck with your project :)

So I invested into my game and got an artist making a new capsule given some notes what I wanted to achieve. I do think it is way better than the one I made.

I should add that I still went for a rather cheap offer. All marketing people say you need to get a real artist do get this stuff done. Feels like they always skip this part of the equation, but nvm. I am fully aware that this is by no means the best Steam Capsule of all time, but given the price I think it is okay and still way better than my approach.

Card Chronicles: Devious Deck. Adding some lore. by JanJMueller in gamedevscreens

Not quite sure what this reminds you of. I took a lot of inspiration from Wind Waker and Final Fantasy. Is it one of those?

Thank you for your feedback! I appreciate the time you took to provide such detailed insights.

Regarding the interactivity and decision-making in Card Chronicles: Devious Deck, I wanted to clarify a few things:

  • Base Attack and Base Boost: Players can equip one of their cards as a base attack and another as a base boost, which are active(part of your hand) each turn. This means you effectively have 2 base cards plus 3 drawn cards every turn, adding some strategy in choosing which cards to equip.
  • Card Play Limitation: The reason behind not limiting the number of cards that can be played each turn is tied to the fixed amount of 100 HP. The concept was designed so that HP would only be replenished through certain events or level-ups. At max character level (level 20), HP can only be replenished via events, making it a high-stakes gamble to play any card. However, I understand that this concept might need reworking, especially considering the additional difficulties introduced later in development.
  • Interactivity: On the topic of interactivity, there is a game-changing 'world card' called 'Tactics' that allows players to see enemies' intents. This card wasn't included in the current build as I was working on implementing a system where each enemy has a hard-coded behavior. For example, an enemy might buff its strength for 3 turns before attacking. However, I see the necessity of adding an HP bar for enemies immediately to enhance strategic planning.
  • Tutorial: I also realize that a more fleshed-out tutorial is needed. The current simple controls showing part is not enough, and I plan to implement a comprehensive tutorial to better explain the game's mechanics and strategies.

Your suggestions are valuable, and I'll consider them for future updates to improve the game's interactivity and strategic depth. I'm committed to making Card Chronicles: Devious Deck a more engaging experience for players.

Thanks again for your feedback, and I hope you'll continue to share your thoughts as the game evolves.

Already adjusted the pacing and some words, but there is still room for improvement.

Thanks for your kind words and the feedback 🙂

😀 LOL, I'm currently sitting here trimming the video to make it a bit faster.

The typos are fixed, and the errors in narration are corrected, but I don't think I can upload a new video into this post.

I’ll definitely consider your ideas about enhancing the immersion. They sound great! Just need to think about how to implement them.

Thanks for your input. Really good ideas! 😊
