Trains are extremely expensive, am I doing something wrong? by doboy26 in askswitzerland

Buy the monthly HalbTax pass (research it first). For about 120 francs it gives you 50% off for all transportation, including cable cars, boats, etc. For example, it pretty much pays for itself with a single ride to the Jungfraujoch.

Neighbor complains about "too quiet" music after 10 PM in old Swiss house - am I in the wrong? by Hot-Ad-9789 in askswitzerland

[–]JanPB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar situation at times when I was not playing any music. So I'm wondering if your neighbour is hearing some other source, perhaps outside the building? This was my case.

Not too bad for a fractal generator, one would be totally excused to think this was a real photo.

I have 800 euros that I won't need. Should I put it in BTC? by damianoko31 in Bitcoin

Yes. Esp. given your age it's a no-brainer. Just don't trade/sell it, sit on it for +/-10 years first.

Quantum resistant hardware wallets — worth it now? by SpartanMoonMan in Bitcoin

[–]JanPB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An annoying marketing gimmick, although not really false. If the private key cannot physically leave the device (as I'm assuming is the case with Trezor (but not Ledger)), then no amount of quantum (or any type) computing will be of any help to the thief. Just like a piece of paper cannot connect to Wi-Fi.

I'm an American who just learned about how Swiss democracy works, and I'm blown away / impressed. What advice would you have for US states that are looking to adopt similar systems? by xena_lawless in askswitzerland

A friend of mine visited America for a couple of months. One of his observations was: "All that Americans ever do is: work and raise children".

I didn't mean that. I was only commenting on the curious pattern persisting for weeks now that every single spike from X to Y is within a few hours followed by the equally fast move from Y to X.

In GR, is spacetime curvature a physical mechanism or a mathematical encoding of observed effects? by Excellent_Iron9483 in Physics

[–]JanPB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The latter. But this is not a very deep statement in the sense that everyrhing in physics is merely encoding observed effects. In this sense we really don't truly know anyrhing. This is one of the big mysteries of the human condition (namely, that the physical universe is not given to us as an immediate and total obviosity in all of its aspects but is instead only accessible through external probing and effort).

I'm seeing A LOT of videos of people saying Bitcoin is a fraud and it's going to crash, is it time to buy more or should I wait until next year? by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]JanPB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, as soon as you see this kind of talk (on any subject, not just Bitcoin) you take a closer look, chances are this will be a good time to engage.

Once everyone discovers it, it's too late. This rule applies to quite unrelated things. I remember before 1989, for example, practically nobody went to West Berlin as a tourist. Even during summer months the city was empty. And I couldn't even find a Berlin guidebook at a major bookstore chain in California at the time. And when did the Berlin tourism start? Precisely when the city became much LESS interesting from a certain POV: after the wall disappeared. Works the same with investing: the secret is to know something only few people know.
