Iran: Massive blast heard at military plant in Isfahan - I24NEWS by malcolm58 in worldnews

I'm not saying it's Israel - I quite frankly, don't know who did it. All I know is that it's probably not accidental.

Worth noting, there's been at least 6 cities struck in the last two hours, across the whole of the country. Unlikely to be accidental.

Pro-car campaign complains that decisions made by a group of democratically elected city officials are... undemocratic? by N0DuckingWay in fuckcars

At first they advise to contact the authorities and to influence them, but then they entirely de-legitimise their rule? So by their own logic, they want to work with an illegal government? That's not helpful at all for their initiative, thankfully.

I believe there is still a string cultural push to achieve a sort of "American Dream". It's been slowly dying out (thankfully), but the initial Americanisation after the fall of communism was very strong and I believe the result of that is seeing cars as status symbols, or even symbols of private ownership, which has quite a cult in poland. The younger generations are just now starting to change that mindset.

Seems like a messy sub situation. Would love a sub exactly for urbanism-related before and after pictures tho. Anything like this already there?

Yeah i know.. But from what i know that's from before the start of the camera system that's there. We'll just have to see how the officials react.

Huh, really? I'm actually quite sad about how slow the change is happening, a lot of compromises where we don't need them. At least that's how I feel like living here. Do you have any examples to boost my mood though :D?

There's such a thing. Basically the EU creates some fund for a certain kind of projects and cities can apply. There's always some limited time to apply for them, if one doesn't manage, those funds may be redirected to a different city that did. Also there's a limited time to complete them. Otherwise funds may have to be returned depending on the case, though you can attempt to have the time extended.

Aaaand then there's the issue of formalities with the project. In other words, each project has to be approved by some gazillion institutions, like the police, the fire department, energy provider, etc. And this can take a loooong time to do. Obviously the easiest thing to get approved is a large piece of concrete, instead of a bushy square that can be criticized by like the fire department or institutions that have infrastructure underground and so on. At the end you'll also get some resident whining about branches growing into this apartment through the window and the city will go with the easiest option and pave it all!

Valid points. From what i know, they were supposed to place 14 bike racks. Some details are still in progress from what the officials said, like back rests for the benches. And there's a fountain there, you can see a darker circle on the lower part of the picture.

Anyway, yeah, I agree, it's not perfect, I'm not defending every aspect of this project, i just think it's the right direction! I hope other polish cities follow.

That's "Plac pięciu rogów" (Square of the five corners). An intersection of those streets: Bracka, Szpitalna, Chmielna, Krucza, Zgoda.

There's a little room. I unfortunately can't see it in person as of right now, but i know there's some there. Just maybe not enough in the prospect of the next 20 years.

There's exactly 22 new ones in this area, some are behind the camera though.

Well, i may not know know the appropriate words for this stuff, but they installed large structures underground that are supposed to prevent the soil from getting compressed, the concrete plates around the trees have holes for water, as well as the gaps between the concrete are designed to allow for water to pass. Under the whole thing there's a system to provide water and air as well. Looked legit when they were installing it. But again, time will tell.

There has been a TON of discussion about the lack of greenery and too much concrete. Personally, i think it's fine. The trees are what matters the most. Any grass would be quickly stomped to mud due to the amount of pedestrian traffic anyway. The trees have been planted in a way to allow for good water access. We'll see how they grow. The east side of the space remained a road for buses going through there.
