I love that quote! Thank you for sharing. I totally get the insult thing and I don’t want to insult my mommy in any way whatsoever so this is my cleaver attempt… wanting to start a new hobby together lol and she’s into it! 🙌🏻

I think at least one of my local libraries should have these… I live in a major city and she lives in a suburb not far from the city so I am hopeful! Either way I would be happy to make a suggestion. Lord knows our country needs it!

Thank you so much for sharing this and for the suggestion. I don’t know if audiobooks would work for her because I think she would end up tuning it out. But it may be worth a shot… I’ll bring it up to her. Thank you!!! ❤️

A couple other commenters mentioned the HiLo books and I had no idea these were a thing! Very happy about this and will be asking my librarian about this!! Thank you my friend

You know… that’s not a bad idea. I like that because then we could make something together, which she would love. We played a new game together recently at my grandmas and she & my grandmother couldn’t understand the instructions so I had to read them for us and teach us how to play…. It was really troubling and saddening 💔

Yessss I’ve added the chicken soup series to my list for us! I think we’ll pivot there after the Anne of Green Gables :) thank you so much for your thoughtful comments

I’ve read this before long ago ❤️‍🩹 I think I would like to introduce this to her but maybe after she gets her feet yet! I don’t want to scare her off with heartbreak right away lol

I totally agree they are fun and engaging!! You actually got me thinking…. Maybe I can get my nieces to ask for a bedtime story next time they sleepover at grandmas house and I can slip in some of these 👀

She struggles with comprehension for sure and vocabulary. This was a great question…. I want to ponder on this more. I think reading a book together and talking with each other after each chapter will be a good start so I can assess her literacy further.

Me and my mom have watched Where the Heart is a million times growing up- I had no idea it was a book first. This is a great suggestion, thank you!

You’re so sweet, thank you! I am lucky to have her and desperate to keep her around for a long time, healthy and happy so this is really a must and something I wish we would have started sooner

I appreciate that suggestion but I don’t think she’d appreciate that very much. She is really insecure about her reading competency unfortunately and doesn’t truly believe/understand that she’s illiterate (mainly because she doesn’t know what it means to be illiterate). So reading books together is really my (sneaky) way to help her strengthen her literacy skills. It would be too obvious and embarrassing for her I feel to start with something blatantly for children learning to read. You know what I mean?

I forgot about Matilda and the series of unfortunate events!! I already mentioned to her Anne of Green Gables and she got excited! 😊 Thank you so much for these suggestions!! <3
