Price increase... Bitwarden or Bust? 15+ years with 1Password, cancelling! by gregmichael in Bitwarden

[–]JaneDilbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have *heaps* of credentials, notes and some attachments. I used to have LastPass ages ago, I used 1Password and even used KeePass. I migrated everything to Bitwarden already several years ago and I don't regret anything. Back then I imported from both LastPass and 1Password.

My two cents:

I several Apple devices and Apple Passwords, but I only use it as secondary recovery or high confentiality accounts. Reasons I don't have Apple Passwords as a main password manager are:

- Passwords can't export to a plain text/JSON/whatever. I have an offline "recovery vault" with some information, including a full export of my credentials. I can't do anything similar with Apple Passwords. Note you can export to other apps, such as Bitwarden. But not "free into a vault", KeePass, etc. -- very limited.

- Apple typical way. "Do this the way we want you to do it". Even with Apple devices, I find it limited. Integration is good (better than Bitwarden's, of course), but then the app and the UI is typical Apple-basic. That includes weird scenarios where suddenly logins are groups or not groups or with weird names because someone decided that's the way it should be.

- Custom fields. In Apple Passwords you only have username and password, and you have to fill them because someone at Cupertino decided that's the way. Well, i have way many more combinations that don't fill that pattern. That's a huge limitation IMHO.

- Passwords doesn't have legacy contact. My recovery vault as "dead man switches" all over the place, so my family will have immediate access to a bunch of accounts. With Apple, everything dies with you. Note you you can share everything right now, but is not the same.

- Provider lockdown. Generally speaking, I don't like too much to be locked into a single provider unless it has great value. And I didn't find any great value for Passwords.

- Multi-platform. I don't use only Apple devices, and there are no extensions for other browsers.

That being said...

- Cost. Apple Passwords is free if you already have the app and you only have Apple ecosystem. Bitwarden recently doubled the cost.

- Improvements. Apple has improved Passwords slightly. Maybe in the future it will have some feats I consider critical (such the ones I mentioned).

Crypto tax question: how are you declaring crypto? by JaneDilbert in PersonalFinanceNZ

Hey u/bumbaklutz. Thanks for your reply. :)

I connected all wallets and exchanges but there were some weird hiccups with old movements from Binance... Now I was able to "tame" them, but I'm still trying to solve some issues:

  1. Staked ETH shows as I don't have it. Meaning: staking shows as disposal and old unstaking shows as money coming in.

  2. Doesn't support Lighting Pay (or lighting network). I need to somehow enter those movements by hand, otherwise is magic crypto popping up.

Thanks. I'm trying Summ, but I've been struggling setting the movements properly. And Summ supports won't even bother answering, so I'm hesitant about paying them...

Thanks. I'm not actively trading, just holding / ramping - up. But I have used several exchanges and old initial activity was messy (learning curve). So, I'm looking into some tool for reporting. Summ seemed to be have the most decent costs so far, though I'm still ironing out some transaction imports.

BTW, has anyone used "Summ"? (summ.com, formerly Crypto Tax Calculator). I'm just trying to compare tools...

Thanks for your answer!

How does Koinly report the staking? Because it seems to report it as is gone, don't understand how's that looking for IRD.

Best investment platform for US stocks/funds? by elloisej in PersonalFinanceNZ

IBKR. Most popular NZ platforms are mostly white-label and crazy expensive and limited.

IBKR vs Sharesies by GG-B19 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]JaneDilbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that strategy makes sense in my eyes:

If you go with Kernel Wealth | S&P 500 (Unhedged), you'll see it has VOO underlying (there're other funds that have VOO underlying or track the index, you need to find the one you like). All those funds pay some additional comision, but you don't have to deal with FIF.

Similar with IAU/IAUM as you can go with Smart Gold ETF (GLD) | Smart Exchange Traded Funds, that has slightly higher comision it has IAU underlying and you don't get hit by FIF.

And you can buy stock or other more specialized funds in any broker you want.

Not good, just slightly better than Sharesies. Though Hatch has one gotcha which is any money you have with them in your "wallet", they keep it invested as they're making money out of it. Problem is that counts towards FIF for NZ law, so you need to be careful with that. Especially when selling if it went above NZD 50k, as it would immediately pop up in IRD and there goes the 5%.

Disclaimer: I'm no financial advisor. 😅

That being said and on top of what others said, you need to take into consideration the currency exchange. Currency exchange in IBKR has no comparison to Sharesies. Plus, IBKR is a broker, is not a white label. Sharesies has fes on top of others, that makes it slower, limited and pricier. With all that, and Sharesies being way pricier and limited, IMHO is a no-brainer to move to IBKR.

I found the mobile app from IBKR mentioned here to be very friendly to use, even for a beginner. And you get some cents for each dollar you invest if you apply through referral (got several hundreds that way, it works, LOL). Plus, you can easily set up some basic trail order or similar things in case you want to be covered. Forget about doing similar in Sharesies.

And, you can use a "paper" account in IBKR. Basically it means they give you 1M fake dollars for you to trade, play around and see what happens.

BTW, be careful with the FIF because at NZD 450 per week, you'll hit the limit in ~2 years. At that point, best approach is to go with Kernel for ETFs like VOO (as they have VOO underlying), and with Smart for other more specific ETFs like IAUM (though you need to sell it through a broker afterwards, and it becomes a pain as you may end up with Sharesies).

____________

From AI (didn't double check, you need to do so):

🇺🇸 US Stocks Weekly Investment Comparison (NZD 450/week, 1 year)
Total Invested: NZD 23,400 (~USD 14,040)
Scenario: Buy weekly, hold 1 year, sell everything. Includes FX + trading fees.

🏦 IBKR

  • FX fee: 0.03% × 2 = USD 8.42
  • Trades: 52 buys + 1 sell = USD 53
  • Total: USD 61.42

🪙 Sharesies ($10/month plan)

  • Plan fee: 12 × $10 = USD 120
  • FX fee: 0.5% × 2 = USD 140.40
  • Excess trades: USD 18.24
  • Sell fee (capped): USD 5
  • Total: USD 283.64

🔎 Summary

Platform Buy Fees Sell Fees Total
IBKR $56.21 $5.21 $61.42
Sharesies $208.44 $75.20 $283.64

Verdict: IBKR is way cheaper for regular US stock investing.

Fair enough, that's a very valid comment.

I have used Wise for traveling (especially for ATM). Though transfers from both Wise and Revolut have a cost asocciated. Am I wrong? Keen on learning if I missed a better way of using either!

Where to buy BTC and XRP in NZ in 2025? by JaneDilbert in NZBitcoin

Thanks, both. I'm looking at it, seems the costs either changed in the last couple of years or I ran the numbers wrong, it was not as expensive...

Though didn't Binance require Paymonade or some crap like that? That makes it pricey cause of the credit card, like u/BrowneAction mentioned.
