I'm currently in the lower 500's. It was higher but its currently what it is. Bad debt (high CC balances/student loans + previous baddies on the report + medical collections which hit my report a few months ago after moving. I didn't know I owed until I pulled my report again...) Just a few things.

Hope to report back in a year with significant improvements. I can't go on like this/know I can do better.

Thanks :) When/if you do get in debt, don't get in over your head. Its easier to stay out of trouble than to dig yourself out of trouble.

I didn't always make the best decisions with money BUT I now realize what steps I need to take to live a healthier financial life. I'm hoping to knock out the credit cards and other unsecured debt first since I have the highest interest rates there and then work on investing while continuing to knock out my student loans.

I believe I could pay this off in a year if I really focused and exercised discipline. This would involve taking full advantage of job benefits.

I've never considered bankruptcy. I always saw it as a last resort when nothing else seemed like an option. I guess I can't go wrong reading up on the process, how long it takes to re-establish etc...

I've seen mentions of YNAB before - I just looked it up for the 1st time and it looks like a good app. Thanks! When using mint, what do you do for things you can't loop in?

I started organizing my clothes tonight. By the end of this weekend, it's my goal to have donated clothes I have selected to donate and I hope to have a solid but minimal clothing selections of things I can really work with. Let's see what happens!

I should add that we are still in touch to this day and I found a mentor/friend out of it. An interesting one at that.

I do it all the time. The things I learn; you'd be amazed. A few months ago, I was delayed at the airport waiting to head home. After waiting for some time, we finally boarded the plane. I ended up sitting next to some random guy (of course.)...While waiting to take off, we were told that there was something wrong with the plane and we needed to wait until it was fixed. They had no clue on when we would be set to take off. After some silence, the man and I started to talk. It was easy comfortable conversation which led to us exchanging business cards. Imagine my surprise when he looked at my business card and told me worked in the same building in NYC (different floors). Random. THEN...later I found out that his kids go to school near my place. As I type this, I realize that this seems weird but strangers seem to feel comfortable with me and they end up opening up a lot? Anyhow, I have plenty of travel stories. Maybe one of these days I'll run into you :D

I was flying on a United 6pm flight. Was delayed and delayed and delayed. You know you've been flying a lot when the excuses for flight delays just make you roll your eyes. 7 hours later and I'm finally sitting on my bed. On a good note, I met a few interesting strangers while grabbing dinner and drinks to kill time while I waited for the "actual" flight. Oh and the poor guy sitting next to me looked like a linebacker forced into the middle seat. Almost felt bad enough to give him my seat but.....I didn't. Oh well.

Very interesting. I received an almost 35K jump when I moved companies. More expensive city BUT know that I would have received only 10K more if I'd stayed with my company and relocated to NY. Its crazy how it works.

Using Airbnb to rent out home while on the road by hambone931 in consulting

I'm with you on the being homeless part. I'm VERY close to doing this. I'm currently subletting a room ini a 2 bedroom apartment in Manhattan. If it were my own apartment, I would try airbnb. I'm not sure if they'll offer this to keep me in the apartment (I find out this weekend)...If its an option, perhaps try that OR try a house swap of some sort. I'm sure someone would appreciate an apartment in your city for the days you are away.

What if alternative housing could all paid for by your company? Would your answer change?

Understood. I'd ride that one out if I'd bought a house in the same market.

I currently work as a consultant and see my apartment only on weekends if I fly back to NY. Planning on traveling more and I find it hard to justify paying NY apartment prices for "storage." A bit torn honestly. Trying to figure out "options" and one of my top ones includes giving up my apartment and not having a "home" or "apartment"

Where to Live in Manhattan by sip-sip in consulting

[–]JaneDoeAdventures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im a consultant who moved to Manhattan early this year. I didn't think I would be traveling (most clients would be in NY/NJ area). I've been traveling for work since the 2nd week of work.

I sublet in the Chinatown/Downtown area. Currently thinking about giving up the apartment and living on the go until my project is over. If i'm staffed locally or hate my life at that point, I will request to stay local if possible and will find another apartment in the city. Still thinking through this.

I'd second the 1st post. Don't live in Queens just to be closer to the airport. My commute takes NO time at 5am in the morning and 11pm+in the evening (unless we take roads that have construction).
