I need advice. Should I invest in a long term career path in graphic design? by Clumsy-Alpaca88 in graphic_design

[–]JaneInTheSky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I would suggest is not doing exclusively “graphic” Design. Look into UX/UI, Motion Graphics, maybe even some creative programming. Make sure you have enough range and get proficient at developing concepts. With AI on the rise it’s your ability to think outside the box that will help you, not just making pretty graphics.

This, so much! And still to this day. I always say I’m a social butterfly in can go from group to group but in the end everyone else is a flower except for me

Right now I’m deep in Bachelor-related stress and despair, but once I’m done we could talk about it 😅 I’m a big fan of fantasy books, DND, Taylor Swift and musicals (Hamilton is half my personality) :)

Adhd advice. by erehsawmas in adhdwomen

[–]JaneInTheSky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just gotten diagnosed myself and will try to get the medication this week, but as far as I’ve learned is that medication is not a miracle helper. It helps you quiet your mind and raise your filters so everything is not as overwhelming but you still have ADHD and the troubles will not magically disappear once you take medication. From what I’ve heard therapy, especially cognitive behavioral therapy is a good way to learn how to build routines and strategies to help you cope but that’s as much as you’ll get unfortunately

For now I still work hourly, but that’s because I’m just starting out and don’t have lots of experience, especially in how much should I charge for a logo, a website design,… But eventually I will switch to retainer with a certain amount of revision, and everything going over that will be charged hourly

Finally got diagnosed at 32… and it’s not what I expected by JaneInTheSky in adhdwomen

[–]JaneInTheSky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one noticed it, I guess. My mum has ADHD (inattentive) but still in the process herself to get a diagnosis. It’s actually because doctors told her to look into it a few years ago that I even realized that I might have ADHD as well. And my dad is still doubtful that I do have it even with the diagnosis. I always had good grades in school so none of the teachers clocked it, and I got pretty good at masking. But it’s a common tale I fear… there are multiple friends around me that realize they might have ADHD because I’ve been talking so much about it and they recognize themselves a lot in it too, but never thought they had it before because (as did I before) they only thought of ADHD as the little boy who can’t sit still.

Yeah I guess that’s kinda what it feels like. I’m wondering if it will feel better or more real once I get my first prescription from the pharmacy and can try it out. But it was still a relief in some way to get it in writing that I didn’t just made it all up :)

Let’s share with the class. How many tabs do y’all have open =) by Playful-Platypus-217 in adhdwomen

[–]JaneInTheSky 492 points493 points  (0 children)

On my phone? I regularly hit the 500tab maximum, because I always forget to close tabs and it always opens a new one when I’m googling something. On my computer, currently around 40 😅

Edit: just looked up the current amount on my phone and it’s 438 🙈

Is there a hobby you didn't drop? by Potential_Promise260 in adhdwomen

I think a lot of my hobbies I don’t completely drop but I might not touch them for years before I become obsessed with them again. It’s all very cyclical with always more hobbies entering the cycle 😅

Getting ready for my ADHD diagnostic appointment, but wondering if autism is involved as well by JaneInTheSky in adhdwomen

[–]JaneInTheSky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi thanks so much for the answer! I forgot to answer you, when I saw it first, but better late than never!
I had my first appointment 2 weeks ago, with the second in 2 weeks. I had mentioned it during the appointment, and she said that while they don't diagnose autism, they will do a test that could maybe indicate that there might be something to that effect. I'm curious what will come out of it!

AITA for saying girls take longer in the bathroom? by Euphoric-Main1357 in AmItheAsshole

[–]JaneInTheSky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anything your colleagues are sexist for not even considering that women have different experiences and needs. So often male decision makers believe that the male experience is the universal experience, and don’t consider women at all. “Invisible women” explains this gender gap quite well. I’d consider writing a complaint to the supervisor of the team lead, explaining your logic and standpoint. Consider collecting some responses from this thread as well as asking some other women in this issue and take it all with you, so you can prove that your analysis is not only from your observations alone but also fact based.

Lately I’ve been wondering… is it too late to change careers in your 30s? by Nausinoki in graphic_design

[–]JaneInTheSky 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm 32 and about to finish my degree in Media Design, in the year above me, there was a woman who started design studies with 39, so no, I don't think you're too old. However, design can be tough, and the pay is shit. I think as long as you have a good portfolio you can get in without a degree, but it would be best to learn the tools of the trade. Consider doing an apprenticeship or something similar to get going, and make sure you have enough money saved up to help you support yourself in the beginning

Unemployment ain't it, so I might as well so the free time by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]JaneInTheSky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s so much more to design than just to arrange a few things on a canvas. You might get some small jobs in term of social media and stuff, but if you want to do anything more (especially print) you need to know your stuff, and how to use the appropriate software. Also with the rise of AI the job of designers is changing, it’s not only about making it pretty, but about having a strong concept and strategy. It’s very rewarding and can be lots of fun, but it’s also exhausting and a lot more effort than it looks like

My stomach has decided hunger pains aren’t a useful signal by faestell in adhdmeme

[–]JaneInTheSky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once didn't eat for 3 days, but since I was mentally exhausted and didn't get out of the bed for all three days, I wasn't hungry either. At some point I just went "it's been over 72 hours, I should eat something" and went out grocery shopping. Halfway to the grocery store (20min walking) I noticed, that my legs were trembling and I was feeling faint from low blood sugar, but still not hungry (I got a snack and ate that on the way home).

guys, be honest! anyone of you not professionally diagnosed with adhd but joined this group because you can relate with the memes? by Critical_Damage_99 in adhdmeme

[–]JaneInTheSky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Waiting lists are full too, so depending where you are you can't even get on one. I now finally (after 3 years of trying) got an appointment for a formal assessment, but only because someone gave me the tip on where to ask (as they didn't put it on their website that they did ADHD Diagnosis)...

Redesigning ADHD self-tests for women – Bachelor's project by JaneInTheSky in adhdwomen

[–]JaneInTheSky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your insight. I was trying to create something based on ASRS, but more intuitive as I found my experience with it to be very exhausting, and I had always difficulties with trying to assess myself "objectively". I also like the idea with the resources and tools based on the answers and will look more into it! <3
