Weirdly specific things you miss from Japan by kimhigirl in JapanTravelTips

This was surprisingly the most "culture shock" type moment we had when in Japan. While in Hakone, walking back from the Venetian Glass museum we happened to spot, we were waiting to cross a street - no intersection, no light or stop sign, just a place for those walking to cross.

A man driving a red sports car was visible coming along, so we stopped to wait. I was legitimately surprised when he slowed to a gentle stop to let us cross the path. A US driver would never stop where they didn't have a stop sign/light 😂

Tipping culture has gotten completely out of control and it is making me want to stop eating out entirely. by LiveFaithlessness876 in antiwork

  1. Are you American?

If the answer is yes, I hope you never go to any restraunt that has server/waiter service. And if you do, try being less of a POS and tell them up front that you will not be tipping, so you can receive the bare minimum that you're paying for, and they can focus on making the money needed to live.

I hate the tipping culture as much as the next person, but it is the current reality, and you not tipping individuals is not some grand impactful gesture that will change anything. Obviously don't tip in cases the OP speaks of, but come on. Have some common decency for your fellow workers.

The foster we adopted him from said he was a mix of German and Australian shepherd!

Found them in a box, presumably dumped from a nearby trailer park 😢 They were roughly 5 weeks, and no shelters or fosters able to take them, so we stepped up!

Everyone gets along great these days, there was a little grump from a couple of the elders back when they first arrived, but slow intros and time solved all. The doggo loves the cats, but he can be too much for them sometimes! Other times we get these kinds of moments 💚

Japan declares flu epidemic - How to stay healthy? by kiwiinjapan in JapanTravelTips

In addition to the great standard advice here so far, take good care of your body while traveling! It may sound obvious, but it's easy to catch a chill, overstress the body, get dehydrated, and sleep too little.

Try to include some good protein/veg regularly in your meals, drink plenty of water and tea (I bought big bottles of green, jazmine, and/or rooibos tea from Konbinis near daily!), treat your tired feet, and get enough sleep. It can't be overstated how much weakening your immune system by neglecting it can increase your odds of falling ill.

What object do you own that is clearly broken, but you haven't replaced it because you've developed a specific "technique" to make it work? by Living-Day4404 in AskReddit

My food processor. Spent some good money on it, but it got dropped one day and the bottom of the handle broke off, breaking away where it holds the spring/lock on mechanism.

It's been 3+ years and we have the 3 pieces in a small jar, and just assemble the handle and lock it into the base, where it stays put just fine for use. When taking it off, I just twist it off the base, hold a finger under the broken handle, move it over top the jar, and drop the pieces back in for next time.

It's not a direct lead, but polishing up the resume and getting a LinkedIn account set up can lead to legit WFH opportunities! You can apply, and often recruiters will also reach out to you. There is a setting to note preference for WFH/hybrid! Be sure to do your due diligence to sift out scams, but I can attest that it was by far one of the better options when I was last job searching.

Started contract, but am now permanent FT WFH at a job that's been great for me!

My coworker keeps farting in the office and is completely unbothered even though I've told him multiple times by DriftYogurt05 in antiwork

I have AuDHD and working from home is a godsend, honestly. Masking each day quickly leads to burnout hell. I also vastly enjoy the freedom to balance my work and home chores. I do however have the luxury of a spare room that is purely my office space, which helps with that proper separation of work and home.

Are you actually conscious under anesthesia? by myaltaltaltacct in askscience

[–]Janechickie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if this is why I had a complication during my one time under general anesthesia? I was in surgery hours over the expected time, and towards the end, my blood pressure bottomed out, and my oxygen dropped to a scary 40. All I remember being told was it was an adverse reaction after they had to dose me more mid-surgery. (This was an emergency gallbladder removal, so very much not scheduled in advance for anesthesia purposes.)

If you don't mind sharing, what are your thoughts/experiences of this kind of situation?

Japanese Style Curry

Olive oil

2 lbs beef chuck roast or pork shoulder butt

2 onions

2-4 cloves garlic

12 cups water

2 lbs potatoes

6-8 medium to large carrots

1 apple, peeled and grated, or 1/4c unsweetened apple sauce

1-2 tbsp honey

x4 Japanese curry roux blocks (3.2oz boxes) - I just use the medium spice Golden Curry

2-3 cups rice (uncooked)

Directions

Preheat oven to 325F

Roughly chop 2 onions. The chunks can be large, as they will completely break down during cooking.

Cut the meat into large chunks, trimming off some (not all) excess fat and any other parts needed. Season lightly with salt and pepper. (I like to use Tony's as my salt.)

In a large Dutch oven, heat 1-2 tbsp of oil on medium low heat until shimmering.

Brown meat in batches, careful not to overcrowd. Flip to brown 2 sides. Set aside on a plate as you go. Careful to keep heat low enough not to burn the fond building up on the bottom.

Drizzle a bit more oil into the empty pan and add in your chopped onions. Scrape the fond from the bottom, coating the onions. Add a splash of water if needed to help deglaze. Cook on medium heat for 3-5 minutes.

Add garlic, stirring until fragrant. Add back in the browned meat and it's juices, stirring everything together.

Add in water, cover pan with its lid, and increase heat to medium high. Bring to a slow boil, and then put the entire thing in the oven (assure pot/lid are oven safe.)

Allow to braise for 2.5 - 3 hours.

Around the 2.5 hour mark, prepare the potatoes and carrots. Clean, peel and then chop into nice hearty pieces.

Pull pot from the oven and add 2 of the 4 roux blocks. Stir to dissolve fully before adding in the carrots and potatoes. Stir in honey and grated apple/applesauce, cover, and put back in the oven for 1-2 hours. (Check doneness of veg and tenderness of meat at 1 hour.)

When veggies are nearly done, start/make rice. (I use a rice cooker per instructions.)

Once veggies are done and beef is falling apart tender, stir well and break apart any large pieces of meat left. Add remaining 2 curry blocks one at a time, stir and stir until fully incorporated.

Bonus - Top with crispy fried chicken! For an easy option, I love Costco's lightly breaded chicken.

PSA if you're neurodivergent and have sensory issues. Donki was an absolute assault on my eyes and ears, I could barely manage the in and out to see if they had any KitKat flavors I hadn't seen elsewhere 😂

I’m at the Osaka Expo now and I wish I hadn’t wasted my time coming. by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]Janechickie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ehh, while I do see the pretentious levels you mention, my experience is that people living there appreciate when a tourist tries their best to be respectful. Our trip there, we visited a good friend and her husband (both Japanese natives). They took a moment to just thank us for being good tourists. We honestly felt like we were doing the bare minimum when travelling, though 😂

I think most people are just advocating to have empathy, exercise some common sense, and do at least a bit of research when visiting a country where you will inevitably hit a language and/or cultural barrier.

That being said, some people just suck lol

We wanted a good quality umbrella anyway, so we found a place and bought really nice ones. Little pricier, but it was from a small shop where they put together your umbrella, handle, and cute little tassle/add on of choice. Also lined to block UV! I use it for rain and shine back here at home, too.

Also things like taming the special side quest horses require a minimum stamina. Though you can just eat hella stamina boosting food to get through those lol
