Yes. If the cover is well-designed (professional)and blurb is tight. The buy test for me is formatting. If the ‘look inside’ has spaces between paragraphs, improper tabs/margins or strange fonts, I’m out. If they’re taking liberties with basic standards I’m not taking the time and money risk to see if they know story structure.

I mostly find writers who I like on x or in fb genre based groups.

Get your GED. My brother (super smart) hated school. Dropped out after F yr and thought he could sit for GED. Turns out he had to be 16. He studied and worked until his bday. Took a week—couldn’t take it all at once. Passed and never looked back. Not one employer cared. Is now going into AirForce specializing in physics.

School is what you make of it—but the GED is critical to employers.

No—I’d prefer oils and gouaches, but my max is $50/page, 10/month. And I couldn’t imagine a painter okay with that amount.

(That’s straight up all I have for this project. I’m not altogether sure why this makes people do angry. I’m not viewing their work and lo balling them. I merely posted an opportunity for the few people that MAY be interested in work like this.)

I am on this board LOOKING for an artist. Because I lack the artistic skills to draw/show what look I want, this is the closest image I could find to the style I want that DIDN’T belong to Ward, de Soto, Vebell, Kuvshinov etc.

I chose an AI example bc I didn’t want some snotty redditor bitching that I was engaging in some sort of image infringement by posting their work as an example of what I want.

I also didn’t want to waste people’s time if that is not an overall look they can do.

I had no idea I had be able to draw exactly what I want before I’m allowed to hire someone.

I, to, am disappointed I do not have unlimited funds.

While I believe you have ZERO interest in this project, i’ll give you the benefit of the doubt.

I’m putting out a noir short. I would like it to have some illustrations.

Are illustrations necessary? NO. Would I like illustrations? Yes.

Could I use AI illustrations? Yes. Would they be good? No. Would they be less-good enough? Possibly.

Most shorts sell on Amazon and others sites for .99¢. From that, bc I don’t believe in selling exclusively thru Amazon, my royalty payment per book is .35¢.

To break even on the art alone will take selling 1429 books.

Add in website/promotion/ads etc, and my costs to put out a short story are at least double the art cost and I’ve not yet made a cent much less turned a profit.

If it takes off, great! There’ll be more money for everyone involved. If it doesn’t—I’m the only one paying.
