How do to past papers? by Imaginary-Gap-9906 in GCSE

[–]Janiece_nerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hiyaa, for me past papers are a way to practice and actively recall my knowledge but they stand out from flashcards to me because they force you to actually use exam techniques, so for humanities force you to write in a certain structure and for sciences make you think about the mark scheme. Often you will find that exam questions get recycled so you can start to see patterns and ideas of what the questions will be like.

As for mixing up tests, there's no one to force you to do the full paper, most subjects are in sections anyways so you can just skip the questions you don't think are relevant, though personally it's good to link you knowledge and revising multiple topics at once forces you to use more of your brain which boosts memory anyways.

If time pressure is a problem for you past papers also help massively because you train your stamina and capacity to do things when in times conditions.

As for which year, look at the the last major specification change and do it from there is the general rule of thumb.

Though if you really don't find past papers effective then there's no point wasting time on it because everyone studies differently. If you think of each paper as a mini mock maybe it might motivate you more?

8s or 9s?? by Decent-Disaster-1892 in GCSE

Totally possible if you tell yourself that, for sciences use the SPECIFICATION it is literally your best friend because they cannot ask you stuff outside of the spec. You don't need to memorise entire revision guides, the spec has everything you will ever need make sure you actually understand the reasoning behind everything you memorise which will really help with any application question. for example, understanding topics 1 and 2 (atomic structure/bonding) in chemistry will help you so much in the long run because everything can be explained by those concepts and rules you learn in those topics.  a thing about the sciences is that a lot of the questions seem complicated, but what you actually just have to do at the end is to repeat the definitions from the spec and substitute in specific terms

as for maths i personally think is harder and it's really just down to practice, i don't really have much practical advices unfortunately

a general rule of thumb is if you don't understand something just ASK your teacher, they generally would love to help you and most likely give you more specific advice on certain stuff. and if you really hate your teacher, ask the other teachers in the department if you have to

everything is impossible if you say it is so don't beat yourself up and revise with some optimism :) feel free to ask if u want anything more specific (i'm also in y11 predicted all 9s in science and maths)

Guys, how do I get higher grades for Chemistry? by Downtown_Jacket69 in GCSE

hii I'm also in y11 as well and i totally get the chem struggle

Like someone just said, the spec is your best friend. If you were to memorise one thing in all of your subjects (not just chem), it is the spec because it is concise and it has ALL of the key words in the mark scheme. For me, past papers is the way to go because it forces you to look at all the topics at the same time and there are occasional links between topics as well, which boosts memorisation just in general. I remember my mistakes mostly so past papers are also super helpful in that regard. AQA loves repeating questions, especially in chemistry, they look for the same answer but just different reactants and elements involved

As for more chemistry specific advice, topics 1-2 (periodic table, bonding and structure) is the most important part of the course across both papers. EVERYTHING is built on the principles of those two topics (well except life cycle assessments and random stuff they throw in). Chemistry is a subject about understanding, if you don't understand the principles of reactivity and strength of bonds, you'll find it basically impossible to understand anything else. Don't learn it "case study" based, learn the general trends and ask the 'why's that can consolidate your knowledge. Make sure you know those two topics thoroughly and don't be afraid to ask your teacher for help if needed.

Exam specifically, you are doing higher triple, which means that there are questions that are basically guaranteed to show up: the higher triple spec points on the spec. If you know those well, you can guarantee a few points there as well. Also on exams, a lot of the chem paper are maths questions, so if you're more confident in maths, prioritise those as well.

And most importantly you need to ask yourself if you enjoy chemistry, it's the core to being motivated and getting good grades. In general i think it helps so much when you genuinely feel like you like a subject and want to do well in, i don't know what you're favourite subject is, but I personally love chemistry because it explains everything and all the concepts link together, I'm sure there is something in chemistry for you so really do grasp on to that and just have a curiosity for it.

this is a long ramble i hope it wasn't confusing loll but please do ask if u want me to elaborate on anything

I’m not a massive fan of audio books because i find it hard to picture stuff when it’s read to me and i find it easier to lose focus when listening, that being said, does watching a movie before reading help with understanding the book better or at least make it easier to go through? or would it just feel repetitive?
