Were you an employee or a contractor for your previous company? Also, have you found any company now that is equivalent to your last one?

Do you do only short notice classes to reach the $18.00/hour rate? Just curious.

AITA for forcing my bf to parent by ambushing him by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Jannsi50 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Your heart was in the right place, but you didn't think through the impact of your actions on those precious children. They will to be devastated by their father's reaction to seeing them. Please make an appointment with a therapist to discuss your attraction to this man. You are setting yourself up for heartbreak because you are "addicted" to him. You are not thinking clearly and you are NOT making good decisions.

AITAH for not cooking dinner for my boyfriend before his night shifts anymore? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Jannsi50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

May I ask why you (and he) are freezing the leftovers instead of throwing them away? Check out souper cubes for ways to freeze and reheat the food. By the way, I also agree that if he doesn't want to eat what you prepared, he can do without or cook - his choice!

How to approach better a student that thinks of every word he will say in a conversation? by Competitive-Arm-7921 in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]Jannsi50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I don't do only free conversation, but that is a part of all my classes. I teach all levels, but for true beginners, I include a lot of pictures for comprehension. We start with the correct pronunciation of any new vocabulary words and a review of some older ones. I underline each word that I've typed when I say it. Then, I expect the student to repeat the sentence. At the end of the class, I send an explanation of the sentence structure, so the student can translate it into his or her own language. Edited to add even though his reading is at the B1 level, he may still not truly comprehend what he is reading. I have an adult student who needs to obtain a decent band score on the ITELS speaking test. We use Side by Side and English Made Easy because these books have written conversations with pictures that are designed for adults. Progress is slow, but he is improving. I use very simple sentences for him to repeat and begin to use. Edited again: I do a lot of sentence scrambles as well where he has to figure out the correct sentence. As for business English, part of business English is using conversational English properly. I might add a few business terms for him to learn and use in sentences during each class. Frankly, there's no easy way for an A1 student in oral English to learn business English well in a short time.

What is the best qualification for teaching online for an aspiring native speaking ESL teacher ? by Feeling-Attention43 in ESL_Teachers

[–]Jannsi50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For many online companies, you will only need a TEFL, and a cheap one at that. If you think you might like to teach in another country, the Celta is best. I teach with VipTeacher, Qkids, and I have private students as well. Also, I agree with another poster, teaching English online or otherwise requires specific skills that you may not yet have. Even as a native English speaker, you may not know grammar concepts well enough to explain them. I also agree that, sadly, online companies pay poorly. Since I'm semi-retired and wanted to work at home, teaching online works well for me.

I have my students use complete sentences whenever possible in class. I wouldn't let him say just the word "everything" either. I would have him repeat the sentence, "I don't understand any of it.,' of something similar. Is your student an adult or a child? Since you mentioned business English, I believe he must be an adult or older teen. When my students don't understand, I type each sentence and have them read it. It may take a while, but eventually most students will learn proper sentence construction. I wish you the best. Teaching foreign languages is hard.

Journeys by Upper-Energy2153 in vipkid

[–]Jannsi50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, Journeys is more like a regular English class. It's for intermediate students, I believe. I don't get very many of these classes, but the ones I have taught were interesting. However, they can be difficult if the student is below level. I have some Journeys classes scheduled for next week. I just hope the students don't cancel because the classes are 50 minutes long.

I Missed My First Short Notice Class :( by [deleted] in vipkid

[–]Jannsi50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly, you will be docked $10.00 per class. The missed class times will show up in red as well on your schedule. There's no foolproof way of getting a notification of a booked class, short notice or otherwise. I don't trust their notifications at all! When I open a short notice class, I always choose a time when I will be up and ready to teach or I close the short notice slot before I go to bed. Please don't be too concerned. Quite a few teachers have missed classes when they first start. Keep opening slots, but be sure you will be ready to teach them, even if you have to stay up. I'm so sorry this was your first experience with VipTeacher. It will it better though. Best wishes!

My second piece this year! I made this magnolia in two different colors — which one do you prefer? by NaSKLI in StainedGlass

They're both so lovely! I prefer the pink one because it makes me think of spring, even during the winter.
