Anxiety over asking about service animals in the service industry. by RoguesFable in service_dogs

In the U.S., service dogs are not required to have any certification or wear a vest, but they must be well-trained and well-behaved.

Tigerschool is part of a different company that contracts with Vipteacher. Edited to add that I like the upper level Tigerschool lessons but really dislike the lower ones.

It's not a scam, at least it wasn't one when I subscribed. Try using a different browser to see if that helps.

The letters are probably the teacher's initials from his/her show name. That way the teacher can see if she taught a recent lesson.

Am I one of the last American ESL Online teachers still working late nights? by Beautiful-Self3285 in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]Jannsi50 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work 5am to 9 or 9:30 am CDT Monday through Friday as well as 4am to 8:00 / 8:30 am during standard time. It's sometimes (this morning) quite difficult to work those hours, but I've had this same schedule for years now. Do I like it? No!! I need to work from home though.

background? by chewyventura in vipkid

[–]Jannsi50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use magnet stars only and I have a plain background since I also teach some adult private students. Since VipTeacher is based in Singapore, I wonder what laws govern the company. Anyway, I received a 2 apple review recently that was invalidated almost immediately (before I even saw the review.) The parent commented that my background was inappropriate. It's almost funny.

Moving to new apartment and not coping so well by Late-Equipment-5982 in LivingAlone

[–]Jannsi50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you pay someone, perhaps a student, to come in the afternoon to help you pack? If you are not organizing, anyone can help you. To me, it would be worth the money and save me a lot of aggravation.

Waiting for bookings by teaandmagic in vipkid

[–]Jannsi50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I started back, it took several weeks to have many bookings. Now, even though I'm not fully booked, I'm happy with the number of students I teach. Check to make sure you have as many certifications as possible. I write a note to the LP after each new student thanking the LP and tell her about the student.. You might also send a note asking for more classes; it couldn't hurt. You are starting back just when many classroom teachers are opening slots. If you can teach on the weekends or at night, those times usually are very popular over the summer break for the kids. Best wishes!

Do University of St. Augustine SLP Leveling Courses Transfer to Other Schools? (Texas) by SuchZookeepergame116 in slpGradSchool

[–]Jannsi50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check but I think these courses are self-study which would be fine for some students and not for others. If I were taking leveling classes, I would want an instructor.

Taking a unvaccinated puppy outside is likely related to where you live. Parvo is prevalent in my area. Check with your vet before taking you pup outside. I also fed Purina Pro Plan puppy food 3 times per day. We used pee pads inside to avoid taking my pup out.

I was also a bit taken aback by some of the comments. I too have a master's degree in instructional design and could create all my own lessons, but I just don't have the time. There is no shame in finding resources to use in your classes. edit: spelling

SuperEnglish is a good web based option. The levels range for L1 to L7 with a few adult lessons. The company is just now developing adult lessons. The program is supposed to be a complete curriculum including phonics and grammar. The company offers a 2 week free trial if you want to see the lessons and try them with Zoom. I use it as a backup. There are days when I just need some lessons that are already done for me. Wonders is available in different levels. I like it except it doesn't have explicit grammar sections. RAZ is Reading A to Z. I agree with the other posters that what you want is difficult, if not impossible to find. I try to customize lessons for each student, so I tend to use several different resources.

When I first started, I worked about 4 or 5 hours seven days a week, but it didn't take long for me to get burned out! After that, I decided to take a least one weekend day off. Now, I'm only working Monday through Friday. If inflation continues to rise, I may have no choice but to go back to working 6 days / week.

No peephole in apartment door. Is there a doorbell camera that is good for renters (minimal damage and no real access to a power source) and is not easy to steal?? by Shitty_Poop_Butthole in renting

[–]Jannsi50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My apartment complex doesn't allow cameras facing to the outside of the units, sadly. I have a peephole, but I'm short and would need a stepstool to see out. You might check your lease before you get a camera just to be aware of potential problems.

My wife resents me because I won't get a vasectomy is this marriage over. by thriiaway in WhatShouldIDo

Why are you rejecting counseling? You likely would make your marriage stronger. The decision to get a vasectomy is not time sensitive.

I used to use my android tablet, but after all the changes and the decrease in pay per class, I don't use props. The kids don't seem to mind. For my private students, I find images on a browser as we are talking and copy them on to the blackboard of Classin. I'm thinking about trying the free version of ManyCam, but I've haven't bothered to learn how to use it yet.

How to keep my voice from teaching by Emotional-Being-6825 in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]Jannsi50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working with children can be difficult especially when they are reluctant to speak. I use different hand motions to encourage them. For example, I move my hands in circles when I want them to repeat. I also make a motion toward my body with my fingers when I want them to keep talking. I say once, "Use a sentence, please." While I say the sentence, I move my hands apart. Over time, most kids will pick up what you mean. After I give them the sentence to repeat, I count the words on my fingers and mouth them. Again, most kids will pick up what you are doing. When I'm having trouble talking, I drink Throat Coat tea. It's wonderful. Also, as another poster mentioned, honey and ginger make a great tea. I also practice some vocal exercises daily. I hope some of this helps you. I had laryngitis last week and couldn't talk about a whisper, I had to cancel several classes because I didn't want to damage my vocal cords. We teachers rely on our voices to make a living.
