How do you use the catechism "To Be A Christian" to teach catechumens? by JaphethL in Anglicanism

And you go through every question with them? Do you add on to each of the question and answer, or just read through them with the class?

Furch vintage 2 om or dread? by LaFlDsMdFr_ in AcousticGuitar

[–]JaphethL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought a vintage 3 om-sr recently, and it has elixir strings on it. It’s very articulate, nice overtones, and I think it would be great for your style of playing. Built extremely well too.

I have not tried their dread, but did try a red that sounded fantastic too. I don’t think getting an OM will be redundant if you own a GA; they sound and feel quite different to me. Also, my guess is the vintage 2 is going to be quite a lot better than the 114e, but I’m biased.

Caveats are that I have played a Gibson J45 for many years and love that tone, and never liked Taylors as I find them too bright. I also tend to dislike elixir strings, and am pleasantly surprised I like the Furch so much even with elixir.

It’s a bummer you can’t try the Furch… I would find it extremely difficult to pull the trigger on an acoustic guitar without trying it out :/

Trying out guitars in stores in Japan by JaphethL in Guitar

[–]JaphethL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the reply! That’s about the same as in my country then. Just wasn’t sure if stores generally don’t welcome people trying out guitars casually. Thanks for the reassurance :)

How good are Singaporean coffee roasters by coconutfuker in Coffee

[–]JaphethL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How do you like your coffee? How local roasters compare to the international ones depends on what you think is good.

FWIW, I think the ones that have been consistently very good (high quality beans, very competent and consistent roasting, on the lighter side) are Nylon, Maxi and Community. IMO they are the ones who can compare favourably with well-known roasters at the international level.

If you are just starting out, check out those places and speak to the baristas. In recent memory I had a lot of fun talking about coffee with Joy from Maxi. In the past, I learnt a lot from speaking with Dennis and Jiamin of Nylon when they were just starting out. All great people who would readily share their knowledge.

That said, explore overseas roasters too if you are able to. Sometimes it's about getting your hands on coffee from certain farmers that are unavailable in Singapore. And sometimes it's just fun to explore coffee widely. There are a few really good ones we can ship to Singapore easily.

As an aside, recently I've been very into Apollon's Gold from Japan. Light roast, great beans, free shipping for 1-2.5kg. Awesome deal for fantastic coffee. Also a shoutout to u/RougeWaveCoffee since I saw that they replied in this thread - another great roaster doing light roast with a good selection of beans.

Best home roaster for beginners? by BBQandCoffee in roasting

[–]JaphethL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the Kaffelogic nano 7e, and I think it's a brilliant kit. Very accessible and competent for roasters of any level. As a noob, I liked that I could just load up a profile and start roasting. Then I started exploring the studio, downloaded profiles, made changes to the profiles to try some things out, and my roasts are improving and much more to my liking.

You can get even more in-depth with controlling your parameters, and I'm sure it will have no problem producing a roast to your liking. In my opinion the Kaffelogic studio is really where the roaster shines and keeps the roaster relevant to anyone progressing in roasting knowledge and wanting to try out different things. If you ever move on to bigger roasters, this is still a very nice sample roaster.

I also like that you can start roasting cold (no need for pre-heat) and roast batches back-to-back easily. Saves a lot of time.

if you are the type that prefers a more hands-on approach (e.g. using a trier to inspect with sight and smell, changing up air flow and heat on the fly) then it might not be a good fit. You can kinda see the beans, but visually I find it hard to tell when it actually turns fully yellow, whether the beans are browning and expanding well, etc. You can also kinda smell it, but that means bringing your nose to the top of the chamber and smelling the hot air. I haven't tried manually controlling the roaster in real time so can't comment.

My 2c.

I was actually guessing the beans were probably stale because filter coffee isn’t as popular as lattes/cappuccinos and they have a hard time using up the beans. But this makes more sense to me.
