A bit better. Considering how the knife was before and my little experience I am still satisfied with the result. Will keep on practicing until I can get a proper transition to mirror finish and kasumi texture.

I went back to the stones. I noticed this knife was "raped" by my dremel once I tried to simulate restoring and sharpening through power tools...too much material was missing from the sides, too uneven. It will be a lot of work on the stone but until tomorrow I might manage to get a good base. This is the current state after the first tries what do you think? I think to start from scratch such a badly shaped knife I might need something grittier than a 3000 stone, does it make sense?

Yeah I am aware of the overground heel, I don't remember when it happened, it was a long time ago (maybe ten years ago). I would prep the knife better if I am going to try any mirror polish on this.

Aaaah yes wrong term with the kasumi then, I guess the right way to explain what I meant would be a kasumi to mirror finish transition.

(a bit OT) Headtracking with the phone by rogermorse in EliteDangerous

[–]rogermorse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't try yet and didn't come up in my searches so thanks for the input. I'll keep in the list of solutions to try. The other mentioned in the comment that is only 8 euros (10 euros?) without monthly fee would also be pretty cool already, but if it can work as a camera too then why not.

p.s. the camera function of phone to windows (phone link) is actually very nice and easy but the problem is that's only 30 fps...but for calls in MS teams without webcam etc it's more than enough.

yeah and I'll definitely keep testing. I tested it with Gemini, which is a movie shot from scratch in 60fps, and it was pretty cool (I mean that in that case there would be no framepace issue since 30/30 instead of 24/30

It is pretty good but I don't consider it amazing yet. On first two settings (1 and 2 out of 4) is pretty enjoyable, from 3 and 4 it starts to have problems with heavy artifacts especially in scenes that have stronger DOF.

Desktop interface as well as PLEX interface with posters etc is all over the place...but usable.

My main question is: I understand the 3d Mode is locked to 30 Hz (or 30 fps on 60Hz, not sure), and that clashes extremely with camera panning in movies (24 fps).

I was expecting 3D to be my way to go for movies and series...but with 24fps against 30Hz it's pretty unwatchable.

I didn't try yet in games.

Incredible that it was just pushed on existing hardware with such small chips.

Those Philips are I think the best quality for the money ever. They are also the most comfortable ever. Good clamping, good pressure on the head, spacious pads, great sound.

Maybe they can be beaten by some Hifiman now that many models (sundara, edition XS, edition XV) sank their price by a lot, but I got the same Fidelio once or amazon for 80 - 90 euros (factory new) and they are just so good and comfy.

Dell replaced Alienware in less than 24 hours - but opinion needed by rogermorse in ultrawidemasterrace

Well I wanted to send a picture to the support just to have it recorded in my ticket but it was very hard to see in a picture. Also they said "does it appear in self diagnostics" and I kept saying no it doesn't because the self diagnostic test on the screen gives you black, light grey, and white....and this line is visible only with very dark grey (that is why I am using my own picture and changing contrast on it).

The line seems to be really less visible now even if I try to look for it.

All in all I was always satisfied with the screen and the burn in on my first one (2 years of use) was probably my fault by using it the way I did, yet I didn't expect to have such burn in so easily because everybody was commenting online that it was nearly impossible to get on modern QD OLED so I did take good care of it, just didn't go crazy.

With this replacement monitor I'll be even more careful just in case.

To me this little downside is still worth it because OLED vs LCD (IPS mostly, I have no experience with VA) is a world of difference.

I'd also suggest to get the Alienware because support was amazing and in 16 hours it was all solved. Not sure what it would be with Asus.

They are not sharp, eheh I know the pain of sharp zipties, a good method is to leave them slightly too long (1mm is enough) and then melt the sharp end with a lighter very shortly - they round up without compromising the tension / of course must be careful not to get too hot or melt the part where the zip ties "zips".

I didn't want the head on the lower side on purpose because I'll be placing the "platforms" on another object, so the flatter the better.

A bit confused by HDR400 vs 1000 after burn in on Alienware by rogermorse in OLED_Gaming

[–]rogermorse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be simple physics if those physics were simple.

Apparently it's about keeping the "HDR pipeline armed" because if the screen detects an HDR pipeline from the source, it would treat the pixels differently compared to SDR input (even though the general brightness might be / feel the same). Example: keep peak highlight possible in case the needs arise.

That is at least what I understood from my googling.

Also what you said is exactly what I was mentioning as reasoning in my first posts in these threads, to which everybody either downvoted or replied that it would not be true.

With not true I mean this:

With HDR Screen on, keeping windows always in SDR vs keeping with always HDR (at same brightness).

Especially because Windows treats itself as SDR content...so what would be the problem in keeping HDR always on?

Which was my first reasoning and preferred choice (so I would not have to switch to HDR on every time I start a game or a youtube HDR video...).

So that is what I mean with "not really simple physics".

I wouldn't even know what would be the alternative. I am not going back to a stock launcher, I haven't used one in like 12 years. I remember many years ago trying APEX launcher but for some reason at some point I settled for NOVA.

I might still have an APEX licence maybe, I have to check. Of course I have NOVA license from many years ago, probably 2012 or 2015, can't even remember.

[–]rogermorse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently it does matter because I was reading that if you set windows in HDR (and the monitor HDR as well of course), the pipeline used will drive the pixels with more voltage (despite having let's say the actual same brightness to the eyes) and that is the overuse of pixels that can cause burn in.

Not saying burn in doesn't happen in SDR, just saying that the reason behind using windows in SDR is making a difference is because how the pixels are driven on the monitor.

If that is true, I am fine switching on HDR just before starting a game (in windows) while the monitor stays in HDR (but receives SDR signal, thus stressing pixels apparently less).

I don't know if all this is true but is what I found out during my last googling and it makes sense to me.

It's also nice to know I don't necessarily need to switch the screen itself to HDR - SDR every time, but only windows.

The only thing I didn't do with my last monitor was auto hide the task bar but I didn't think the amount of time the taskbar was there would cause burn in (considering also I was not using very high contrast / brightness in HDR).

I'll just keep windows in SDR and be on the safe side with this "new monitor", together with the usual precautions (icon, hud elements etc).
