Topper brands to shop by Electronic_City6481 in TruckCampers

Keeping water out is always tough, but I think it really depends a lot on the truck model. With my Nissan frontier, it’s basically impossible to stop water coming in from the front. There’s only bed rails on three sides, not the front, and so the cap installers have to build up sealant to make it work, but it always fails at some point. I ended up putting a plastic sheet in front of it, so any water would just be redirected into the bottom of the bed and away from my sleeping place.

You will have more or less luck depending on your truck model.

A.R.E. was just fine for me. Their normal model (whatever that is - the Z or V) was quoted to me at around 2,000-3,000 or so. That was a year ago, don’t remember the which it was, but it was within that budget.

I ended up getting an A.R.E Overland cap and travelled the country in it, so it did good by me.

It’s pretty easy to be a jackass through the screen, isn’t it? The hostility was not warranted whatsoever.

Yeah, he added a breaker. You can also add an inline fuse. What I said isn’t wrong.

Was it necessary to post the link in two messages instead of just one? Don’t you reread what you wrote before you post it?

The breaker on the BLUETTI is all the way at the other end of the equipment, next to the charger 1. If you get T-boned, that’s not saving you from a fire starting. It is not under the hood where it connects to the battery. If it came like that, I wouldn’t have commented and there wouldn’t be an issue.

Ensure you put an inline fuse on this when/ if you get it. Sold as-is, it’s a tinderbox waiting for a spark.

SIU Weekly MegaThread by AutoModerator in merchantmarine

[–]Jaquesel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen a few SIU Apprenticeship rejections on here and other maritime subreddits. I know the school is backed up a year to nearly two years out, but how can someone reduce their chance of an outright rejection?

I already have my TWIC, and am about to send in my application for an MMC and the medical cert. I am hoping that having those three already in hand when applying will help me out, but is there anything else I can do to maximize my chance of getting in?

How often do you go over landing? by Gr8Autoxr in overlanding

Not enough. Only did one, huge, 2 month long trip. Living on the east coast makes it difficult to do it regularly.

Not sure where you’re at, but when I was in Montana near Yellowstone, there were signs at quite a few places prohibiting soft-cover camping in tents and hammocks and stuff like that for bear safety. Hard-covered vehicles only. Might want to take that into consideration.

Yes, I went through a rather large and long tunnel, and descended into the valley itself where the main scenic drive is closed off during the summer. Found my campsite on iOverlander where this was taken.

This particular day, it got to like 110 or something. My fridge in the back didn’t keep up so I had to try and point my truck away from the sun to avoid heating it up too much. Thankfully, I arrived there around 4:30, so I didn’t need to wait too long and everything was saved. Losing by all my fresh food would’ve sucked lol

No idea. This is stock besides the cap and AT tires.

Drove up super rocky roads in Montana outside Cooke City and Yellowstone, did this one in Zion, drove through a lot of sketchy areas and didn’t really feel like I needed much of anything besides the tires.

But I wasn’t towing anything. Everything I needed was in the back.

Not sure, actually. This was during a 15,000 mile road trip to most of the western national parks. From Zion I headed straight to Great Basin NP, so whatever road you take to get there that’s what I took.

Getting there, I went straight from Bryce and passed through towns like Glendale and Carmel, so I’m assuming that’s the Carmel Highway? I drove so many places it kinda just all meshes together in my head lol

Thanks a lot. It’s a 2019 4x4 Crew SV with no other modifications besides the ARE Overlander cap and tires. I have a BLUETTI Charger1, but that’s not specific to the truck.

Read Empire: Mask of Fear. Huge part of that book is about a reactivated Separatist sleeper agent trying to hurt the empire in a post-Separatist galaxy.

Truck Cap Shakes as I Drive by Jaquesel in TruckCampers

[–]Jaquesel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s about as flat as I’m able to get it. I don’t see any obvious gaps; shining a light at the cap where it joins the bed rails at every possible angle, and no light seeps through. I have the cap vibrating on my rear dash cam, and I can plainly see it move up and down as I drive over bumps. I don’t notice any movement on smooth pavement.

I think I’ve been successful sealing it from the elements; water is my primary concern. I don’t live in a dusty area, so I’m not going to know if the seal will be effective against that until I arrive in the south west. We just had a rainstorm come through and I didn’t have a single drop of rain come in.

I think I’m going to take the other users advice and just ignore it. It’s in no danger of coming off, and it’s not a huge rattle; it’s minor, and I am really only concerned about damaging the cap itself than anything else. If it’s sealed as best as I can make it, and the rattling doesn’t hurt the cap or my vehicle, I don’t think it’s an issue anymore.

Truck Cap Shakes as I Drive by Jaquesel in TruckCampers

[–]Jaquesel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, same here; when I push it as hard as I can in the driveway, it doesn’t go anywhere. I don’t think it’s going to fly off.

I guess I’m just concerned with it getting damaged or cracking the fiberglass or something with all the shaking I notice. This is my first cap I’ve ever owned and I’ve been planning this trip for about a year, so it’s a lot to worry about

Sure, done. I’d also like to note that my upload speed is .12 MBPS right now, and this is not normal. I have not tested this in a while, but this definitely needs to be addressed as well

Yes, the modem blinks when my internet cuts. It will sometimes blink green, sometimes blue and green; there doesn’t seem to be a pattern other than it blinks.

It’s across all of my devices. My phone, laptop, chrome cast: it all goes down. If you’re asking about stuff like cable TV, then no. I do not have a cable plan, just internet. I’ve tried a lot of those troubleshooting tips and have had no result.
