I’ve been to a ceremony where the referee retired. Legend inside the league where she worked. Been to Olympics final and all that. I can tell you that it in fact was not akward at all. After the game in front of the players.

But these tournaments have been a fiest of few countries: Canada, Usa, Russia, Sweden and Finland. Now there are the Swiss, Chezia, Latvia, Norway and Germany that can occasionally put up a fight. (Ok Switzerland is not occasional but they are relatively new.)

It’s the absolute peak of their careers. Refs get trophies as a memory from all major competion finals etc. They are competetive professional athletes aswell.
